Make’s July 17, 2015 feature identifies the maker as Thomas Anton Geurts, a professional woodworker from the Netherlands who earned a woodworking degree in 2009. The feature also includes a making video, identified by YouTube ID BAe2kIVJ0QI.

The bowl was made as a tribute to an earlier 3D cube cutting board by Geurts. The cutting board used the same broad concept—assembling separate cube-like pieces and then combining them into a larger geometric design—but the available source does not provide plans, dimensions, or a current product listing for that board.

3. Combine the cubes into a larger blank
Once the individual units are made, they are combined into one larger blank suitable for turning. At this point the workpiece is a geometric glued-up assembly rather than a bowl. It must be strong enough to withstand trimming, mounting, exterior shaping, and hollowing.
This is why describing the project as a “carved wooden bowl” is misleading. The bowl’s unusual appearance is engineered into a multi-piece blank before the lathe changes its shape.
4. Trim and mount the blank
The assembled blank is trimmed into a circular form and mounted on a woodturning lathe. The source confirms the use of a lathe but does not identify a lathe model, chuck, gouge, or other specific equipment.

Turning removes material from the outside and then from the interior to create the bowl. As the flat, repeated pattern is forced onto curved surfaces, the cube faces change apparent size and angle. Designing the proportions is therefore part of the optical effect. The AAW discussion warns that sweeping curves can distort a cube illusion significantly. Steeper sides and a relatively flat bottom help preserve the pattern more clearly than a very round, heavily curved bowl profile.
Why the pattern looks three-dimensional
The effect combines physical geometry, contrasting wood colors, and the way the pattern is altered by curvature. Each color helps define a face or edge, while the repeated arrangement encourages the eye to interpret the blocks as solid cubes.
“Tumbling cube” is a useful search term for this type of physical woodworking design, but it should not be confused with the Necker cube. A Necker cube is a two-dimensional ambiguous line drawing; Geurts’s bowl uses real pieces of wood assembled into a three-dimensional segmented blank and then shaped on a lathe.
Finishing the turned bowl
After shaping, Geurts applies several coats of Danish oil. The Make feature says the oil brings out the natural colors of the walnut, cherry, and maple.

How long did the project take?
Make reports that the complete process took “a couple of days.” That is Geurts’s reported project duration, not a reliable schedule for every woodworker. A similar build may take longer depending on:
- the number and size of the cube units;
- how accurately the components are cut and aligned;
- glue-up and curing time;
- the equipment and experience available for turning;
- the amount of hollowing, sanding, and surface refinement required; and
