The most important yard-safety upgrades depend on what your household has: a pool calls for a complete barrier, play equipment needs impact-protective surfacing, and active mowers, grills, and chemicals need clear separation from children. These seven practical measures focus on common, high-consequence hazards; they are a checklist, not a universal ranking. No single safety feature replaces attentive adult supervision.
1. Enclose pools and spas with a complete barrier
If your yard has a pool or spa, install a fence that fully surrounds it and separates it from the house and yard. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends a fence at least four feet high, difficult to climb, with a self-closing, self-latching gate. The AAP also recommends a pool-gate latch at least 54 inches high; local code may specify different requirements. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) says the gate should open outward, away from the pool.
Check state and local requirements before planning or altering a barrier. The AAP notes that there is no national pool-fence law and that requirements vary by locality. Alarms and covers can add protection, but they do not replace a complete, properly installed barrier or adult supervision. The AAP describes drowning as the leading cause of death for children ages 1–4 in the United States; this is its safety guidance, not a newly published dataset. 2. Put impact-protective surfacing under play equipment
Choose surfacing for the equipment’s fall height, the product’s requirements, and the surrounding use zone—not just for appearance. CPSC guidance describes loose-fill materials and tested impact-protection mats or tiles. Its handbook recommends protective coverage extending six feet in all directions for most home play equipment, with a swing’s use zone extending in front of and behind the swing.

The AAP’s backyard guidance gives 12 inches of sand, mulch, or wood chips as an example base and also mentions safety-tested tiles or mats. These recommendations are not a universal specification for every playset or material. Follow the equipment and surfacing manufacturers’ installation instructions, including any required depth, impact rating, coverage, drainage, and maintenance. Grass, carpeting, and thin mats are not equivalent to tested impact-protective surfacing. CPSC’s Home Playground Safety Checklist and the AAP backyard safety page provide further guidance.
Choose a surface you can install and maintain correctly
- Loose-fill: Compare the specified depth for the equipment’s fall height, how often material must be replenished, drainage, and whether the surface stays in the required use zone.
- Unitary tiles or mats: Confirm the product is safety-tested for the intended equipment and fall height, and follow its installation and maintenance instructions.
CPSC describes these options but does not name one as best for every yard. Use-zone dimensions and suitable materials can vary with the equipment and the applicable instructions.

3. Anchor and inspect play structures
Protective surfacing reduces impact risk, but the structure itself also needs regular attention. Check the playset’s connections and hardware, secure elevated platforms and ramps with guardrails or barriers where recommended, and cover anchors to prevent trips. Remove or correct sharp edges and protrusions.
Look for openings that could trap a child’s head or neck. CPSC guidance says openings should be less than 3½ inches or greater than 9 inches in the relevant cases. Inspect the structure and its surrounding area for loose parts, damage, and hazards before children play. Follow the equipment maker’s maintenance and safety instructions alongside CPSC’s playground guidance.

4. Keep children away from mowing and store yard tools securely
Keep young children indoors or well away from the mowing area while a mower is operating. Before mowing, clear stones, sticks, toys, and other objects that could be thrown, and maintain the mower’s guards and shields. Store mowers, trimmers, fuel, and lawn chemicals where children cannot reach them.
The AAP recommends that children be at least 12 to operate walk-behind power mowers and at least 16 to operate ride-on mowers. These are AAP recommendations, not a statement of law. See the AAP’s lawn-mower safety guidance and backyard safety advice.

5. Set a child-free zone around grills and fire pits
For households with young children, the AAP recommends a child-safety fence around outdoor cooking and open-fire areas. Keep children away from grill knobs and hot surfaces, and fully extinguish fires before leaving the area. Place the barrier to prevent access to the heat source, while following the grill or fire-pit manufacturer’s instructions and applicable local requirements. Keep children away from pesticides and fertilizers, and store these products out of their reach. Follow each product label’s directions for use and for when people may return to a treated lawn or garden. The AAP backyard page advises keeping children off treated areas for 48 hours after spraying, but that interval should not be applied automatically to every product: verify the label and local guidance before allowing access.

Review plants in areas children use and identify those that may be poisonous. The AAP’s backyard safety page discusses both chemical precautions and potentially poisonous plants.
7. Make supervision and a recurring yard check part of the routine
Before children head outside, take a quick look around; repeat the check when conditions or activities change. Pay particular attention to hazards that can appear between visits.
- Pool or spa gates are closed and latched.
- Standing water is removed or inaccessible.
- Play equipment has no loose hardware, sharp protrusions, or exposed anchors.
- Protective surfacing remains in place across the required area.
- Chemicals, fuel, and tools are secured.
- Trip hazards such as toys, sticks, and hoses are cleared from active play and mowing areas.
- Children are kept away from equipment while it is operating and from grills or fires.
This check is a practical way to apply the AAP’s emphasis on close supervision, particularly around water and play equipment; it is not a separately validated intervention.
