The right locker lock depends first on the locker itself: a portable combination padlock works only with a compatible hasp, while a built-in lock must match the door, latch and hole pattern. After confirming fit, choose an access method and user setup that suit the locker’s use—such as an assigned user, a sequence of day users or facility-managed access. Electronic and “digital” locks are not one standard technology, and their maintenance and fallback arrangements vary by model.
Start by identifying the kind of locker you have
Locker locks fall into two broad categories: portable locks attached by the user, and locks installed in the locker door. The distinction determines what you can choose and who may be responsible for setup, access and replacement.
Portable combination padlocks
A combination padlock is suitable only if the locker has a hasp designed to accept an external lock. Check that the shackle passes through the hasp and closes without binding, and that the locked position does not interfere with the door or latch. The hasp’s clearance and the padlock’s shackle dimensions matter as much as the lock’s listed features.
Combination padlocks are a personal-lock option for compatible lockers. Some models have features such as reinforced shackles or laminated steel bodies, but construction varies by model; those descriptions alone do not establish how one lock compares with another for resistance to attack.

Built-in locker locks
A built-in lock mounts in the locker door and is generally selected or maintained by the facility. Common forms include combination and keyed locks, mechanical locks designed for successive users, and electronic locks. A replacement that looks similar may still be incompatible if its footprint, handing, latch or door-thickness requirements differ.
Understand the access options
“Electronic” and “digital” describe a broad set of products, not a single access method or management system. Check the exact model’s documentation rather than assuming a digital lock uses a phone, connects to a network or records activity.

Successful clearance restores the factory default 123456, achieving quick setup and easy reset
Mechanical combination and keyed locks
- Built-in combination: The user opens the lock with a combination. Some facility-oriented product ranges include preset combinations and key-control override options. Facilities that use such systems need procedures for safeguarding combination records and control keys.
- Built-in keyed: The lock opens with a physical key. Keying arrangements and facility use cases vary, so confirm how keys are controlled and what the replacement process is.
- Multi-user mechanical: A set-your-own-combination design can be intended for successive users. Confirm the exact model’s reset and handover behavior before assigning it to shared day use.
Electronic PIN or keypad locks
Battery-operated keypad locks may support user codes and separate staff or master code levels. Some models also have private and public operating modes, delays or other fallback functions. These are model-specific features, not guarantees for every keypad lock. One documented PIN product family, for example, describes user, staff and master code levels and an emergency USB power connection.
RFID, fob and Bluetooth access
RFID locks use a credential such as a compatible card or fob. Credential standards are not universal: a documented ASSA ABLOY SENSE product family supports MIFARE card technology, but buyers should verify the exact card or credential supported by the lock they are considering.

Some products also describe Bluetooth access or a Bluetooth-enabled fob for a particular application. That does not mean every product marketed as “digital” works with a smartphone, uses the same credential or can be administered through the same software.
Wired electronic locks
A wired lock depends on a connected access system for power or activation rather than operating solely on its own battery. That can make it part of a broader facility installation, but it also means the lock’s operation depends on the system it is connected to. Confirm what equipment, cabling and system support the particular model requires.

Match the lock to the locker and its users
For individuals, first follow the facility’s rules. If the locker accepts a personal padlock, check the hasp and shackle fit before choosing one. If the locker has an integrated lock, the school, gym, workplace or other facility may control its combination, key, reset or override procedure; adding a padlock may be disallowed or may not secure the door correctly.
For facilities, begin with the locker manufacturer and exact door design. Establish the physical requirements before selecting an access technology.

- Door and lock fit: Check door thickness, mounting-hole footprint, handing, latch geometry and whether a specified extension kit is needed.
- Locker orientation and latch: Right- and left-hand orientation, lift-latch, springbolt, deadlocking and wrap-around latch designs can affect compatibility.
- User pattern: Decide whether each locker has one assigned user or is shared by changing users. Private and public electronic modes and multi-user mechanical designs may serve different patterns; confirm how the exact model behaves.
- Access credentials: Decide whether users will rely on a combination, key, PIN, card, fob or connected system, and who will issue and manage them.
- Power and recovery: For electronic models, establish the power source, battery replacement process if applicable, low-power response and emergency access procedure.
- Administration: Define who handles lost combinations, keys, codes and cards; who has override credentials; and how access changes when users leave or lockers are reassigned.
- Environment and upkeep: Check the manufacturer’s environmental guidance and maintenance instructions. One ASSA ABLOY PIN product description specifies dry-area use and says a rubber gasket permits use in wet areas; do not apply that guidance to other models without checking their documentation.
Plan for electronic-lock administration
Electronic access can reduce users’ need to carry a physical key, but it introduces facility tasks that a simple padlock does not. Before installation, assign responsibility for credential issuance, lost-credential handling, battery replacement, emergency access and user turnover. Confirm whether any software, cable or connected system is needed.
Do not infer network connectivity, audit-trail features or remote administration from a product being described as “digital.” Such capabilities depend on the specific product and setup. For example, ASSA ABLOY SENSE+ materials describe local software functions including lost-card handling and an audit trail for that product family; those functions should not be assumed for unrelated RFID or electronic locks.
For mechanical systems, combination control charts and override keys also require careful handling. Keep assignment and combination records, control keys and administrator credentials accessible only to authorized staff. Use the manufacturer’s documented installation, operating and maintenance procedures for the exact lock.
Use product specifications carefully
Compatibility statements are model-specific. A Master Lock 3685 specification dated July 2017 describes a standard three-hole pattern and suitability for most flush-mount metal, wood or phenolic lockers. That is not a universal fit statement, and the specification’s date makes it especially important to confirm current documentation and measure the locker before ordering or installing a replacement.

They are useful for narrowing options, but they do not provide an independent, head-to-head security ranking. The available manufacturer product and support descriptions do not establish that combination, keyed, RFID, keypad or wired locks are categorically the most secure. Assess the complete installation, locker construction, access controls and relevant security requirements rather than treating the lock type alone as a security verdict.
Quick Recap
Installation and handover checklist
- Identify the locker and latch. Record the locker model if known, door thickness, mounting pattern, handing and latch type. For a portable padlock, measure or test the hasp clearance against the shackle.
- Confirm compatibility. Match the lock to the specific locker or door design, and verify whether an extension kit or other specified component is required.
- Choose the user arrangement. Decide whether use is assigned or shared, then confirm that the lock’s mechanical or electronic mode supports that arrangement.
- Document access and fallback. Set procedures for combinations, keys, codes, RFID credentials, lost access and emergency opening. Keep control records and override credentials secure.
- Install and maintain to the model instructions. Use the exact manufacturer guidance for installation, operation, battery replacement and administration. Do not assume a procedure for one electronic model applies to another.
- Test before opening the lockers for use. Verify normal access, any staff or override process, and the documented fallback method under the facility’s operating conditions.
