Scrappy table toppers are small quilted projects made from fabric leftovers, but the title does not describe one fixed pattern. It refers to a varied collection of tabletop designs in different shapes, sizes, block styles, and skill levels. The most accessible approach is to choose a simple layout that fits your scraps, piece the top, add batting and backing, quilt the layers, and finish the edge with binding or a pattern-specific self-binding method.
Scrappy table toppers are small quilted projects made from fabric leftovers, not one single standardized pattern. The collection commonly associated with this title is an AllPeopleQuilt roundup of tabletop projects in different shapes, block styles, sizes, and difficulty levels. It includes examples such as Saltwater Taffy, A Bit of History, Bright Bits Mini Quilt, Balancing Act Table Topper, Bay Breeze, Bitty Bow Ties, Harvest Table, Scrappy Nine-Patch Quilt, Autumn Harvest, Table Matters, Fall Mix, and Scrappy Triangles.

That variety is the appeal: you can use narrow strips, leftover squares, small antique-fabric snippets, batiks, solids, charm squares, or coordinated scraps to make a useful accent for a dining table, coffee table, entryway, or seasonal display. A topper is also a manageable way to test a color palette or practice quilting before committing to a bed-size quilt.
What you need for a scrappy table topper
Although the exact supply list depends on the selected design, most projects require:
#1 Best Overall
- SEWING AND QUILTING RULER: Large acrylic ruler for precise measurement, with highlighted seam allowances, easy-to-read measurement lines, and broken grid lines for fabric edge visibility
- PRECISION ART SUPPLIES: Ideal for measuring and making precise cuts through fabric; Bold 3" x 18" measuring grid makes measurements easy to read with speed and accuracy; Non-slip vinyl feet can be removed or added for secure cuts
- LONG LASTING AND RELIABLE: Thick acrylic material for lasting durability after sustained use; Fiskars craft supplies and materials are built to last
- QUALITY TOOLS FOR ARTS AND CRAFTS: From scissors and cutting mats, rotary and paper cutters, to classroom essentials, scissors for kids, and quilting and scrapbooking supplies, Fiskars crafting tools are designed to help you express yourself
- INCLUDES: 1 Fiskars 3" x 18" Acrylic Sewing Ruler; Full lifetime warranty
- Assorted fabric scraps for the pieced top
- Background or accent fabric when the pattern calls for it
- Backing fabric
- Low-loft quilt batting
- Thread suitable for piecing and quilting
- Binding fabric, unless the project uses a self-binding finish
- A rotary cutter, cutting mat, and clear quilting ruler
- An iron and pressing surface
- Quilting clips or safety pins for basting
- A sewing machine and, ideally, a walking foot for machine quilting
Do not assume that scraps alone will supply everything. Most instructions still require separate backing, batting, thread, and often binding. Before cutting, check the individual pattern’s requirements and finished dimensions.
Choose a design by the scraps you have
The best pattern is usually the one that matches both your fabric pieces and your preferred construction method.
| Scraps or style | Good project direction | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| 5-inch precut squares | Charm-square layouts such as Bay Breeze-style designs | Fast sorting and cutting, with less need to reduce larger scraps |
| Narrow leftover strips | Strip-pieced toppers or runners | Efficient use of long remnants and a straightforward assembly process |
| Many contrasting small pieces | Nine-patches, pinwheels, stars, or triangle units | More cutting and seam matching, but strong graphic movement |
| Fall-colored prints | Harvest Table, Autumn Harvest, or Fall Mix-style projects | Useful seasonal decor with controlled color selection |
| Batiks and solids | Color-controlled modern scrappy layouts | Visual cohesion even when the individual fabrics differ |
| Very small or irregular pieces | Improvisational patchwork or a design that cuts small units | More flexibility, but less predictable fabric yield |
Scrappy does not have to mean random. You can sort remnants by color family, value, print scale, fabric collection, or season. A controlled palette of blue and white scraps will read very differently from a deliberately mixed collection of bright prints, even if both use the same block.

A reliable workflow
1. Sort and inspect the fabric
Separate pieces by size and color. Remove badly frayed edges, identify fabrics that are too lightweight or stretchy for the chosen pattern, and check that the usable area is large enough for the required cut. Quilting cotton is the safest general choice for beginners because it is stable and works well with standard patchwork methods.
Lay candidate fabrics beside one another before cutting. Look for enough contrast between neighboring pieces. If every fabric has the same value, a carefully pieced design can become visually flat even when the colors are different.
2. Select the block or layout
Common tabletop structures include strips, nine-patches, half-square triangles, charm-square arrangements, log cabins, stars, bow ties, and improvisational patchwork. Start with strips or simple squares if you want fewer points to match. Triangle units and small blocks offer more movement but reward accurate cutting and consistent seam allowances.

- Quilting ruler Ideal for many forms of crafts, including quilting, sewing, patch working, piecing, measuring, drawing, and crafts.
3. Cut accurately
A quilting rotary cutter is useful for producing consistent strips, squares, rectangles, and triangles. OLFA identifies a 45-mm cutter as a common quilting size, while its 60-mm cutter is intended for longer straight cuts and trimming through quilt layers. Use any rotary cutter with a compatible self-healing mat and ruler, and keep the blade guarded whenever it is not in use.
A clear quilting ruler makes it easier to see grain lines, align strip edges, and repeat measurements. A 6-by-24-inch ruler is practical for long strips; a smaller square ruler is helpful for trimming blocks. A self-healing cutting mat protects the work surface and provides grid and angle markings. If you are assembling a basic setup, compare a self-healing cutting mat for quilting with a clear quilting ruler before buying specialty rulers.
Rotary cutters are sharp tools. Cut away from your body, keep your free hand behind the ruler rather than in front of the blade, close the blade after every cut, and store it where children cannot reach it.
4. Piece the top
Sew the cut units using the seam allowance specified by the pattern. Press as directed rather than pressing every seam in the same direction by habit: alternating seam directions can help adjoining rows nest, while pressing seams open may reduce bulk in some small blocks.
Before joining major sections, arrange the pieces on a design wall, clean floor, or large table. Photograph the arrangement if you need to move it. This is especially helpful with scrappy designs because rotating a block or accidentally reversing a row can change the intended pattern.
5. Assemble the quilt sandwich
The conventional arrangement is quilt top, batting, and backing. Baste the layers with clips, safety pins, or an appropriate temporary basting method, smoothing from the center outward so the backing does not bunch.

Some beginner projects use a self-binding technique. In that case, the backing is cut or positioned to wrap around the front edge, and the layers may be assembled in a different order before turning and stitching. Follow the selected pattern rather than substituting the conventional sandwich automatically.
6. Quilt the layers
Simple quilting is usually enough for a small topper. Suitable options include:
- Straight lines along seams
- Quilting in the ditch
- Crosshatching
- Wavy lines
- Walking-foot quilting
- Meandering or stippled lines, if you are comfortable with them
A walking foot helps feed multiple layers more evenly on many domestic sewing machines. Begin with a test sandwich made from scraps so you can check thread tension, stitch length, and the amount of quilting before working on the topper.

After quilting, trim away excess batting and backing. Check that opposite edges are parallel and that the corners are as square as the design permits. Finish with separate binding if the pattern specifies it, or use the self-binding method for a project designed that way.
How much fabric and batting do you need?
There is no universal material quantity because these projects vary widely. A representative strip-based project finishes at about 18 inches square and uses assorted scrap strips, a fat quarter or pieced scraps for backing, a fat quarter or several 2.5-inch strips for binding, and approximately a 20-by-20-inch piece of batting. Another beginner star project uses scraps or a fat quarter for the star, a backing fat quarter, and approximately 18-by-18-inch batting.
Other table projects are rectangular runners rather than square toppers. Examples in the wider pattern landscape include projects around 17.5 inches square, 18 inches square, and 15 by 43 inches. Treat those measurements as examples, not as specifications for every design. Measure the finished top and add enough extra batting and backing for quilting and trimming, following the instructions for your particular pattern.

Fabric and batting choices
Quilting cotton is a dependable starting point. It is stable, widely available, and compatible with ordinary patchwork techniques. Batiks, solids, charm squares, seasonal prints, and mixed scraps can all work when their weight and stability are reasonably compatible.

Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Low-loft cotton batting is a practical choice for a flat table topper. Warm & Natural is one commercially available example; the manufacturer describes it as needle-punched and suitable for quilts, wall hangings, placemats, and similar crafts. Its guidance makes pre-washing optional and notes that approximately 3% shrinkage may occur after a cold wash. The company also states that its batting can be quilted or tied at intervals of up to 10 inches.
If you purchase batting, look for low-loft cotton quilt batting or a comparable product whose care and quilting-spacing instructions match your project. Pre-washing is a design choice: it can reduce later shrinkage, but leaving the materials unwashed may preserve a crisper appearance. Follow the batting and fabric manufacturers’ care guidance.
Ways to make a scrappy topper look intentional
- Control one variable. Keep the background fabric consistent while varying the scraps, or limit the scraps to one color family.
- Use value for contrast. Place light, medium, and dark fabrics together so the block remains visible.
- Repeat a fabric. Reusing one or two prints throughout can connect otherwise unrelated scraps.
- Separate busy prints. A low-volume background or solid can prevent densely patterned pieces from competing.
- Arrange before sewing. Scrappy projects can change dramatically when neighboring prints or values are swapped.
- Keep the quilting simple. Straight or wavy lines often complement a busy pieced top without adding another competing pattern.
When precuts or a book make more sense
You do not need a large scrap stash to make a scrappy-looking topper. Five-inch charm squares provide coordinated variety and are a useful alternative when you want predictable pieces without cutting every unit from yardage. They are not a requirement; they simply make some layouts easier to plan.
If you want several related projects rather than one roundup, Friendship Strips & Scraps from Fox Chapel/Landauer includes 18 projects, including quilts, table toppers, a table runner, and wall hangings. The book focuses on strip panels and fusible appliqué, so it may appeal to readers who want a broader scrap-quilting project collection.

- Choose a simple strip, square, or nine-patch layout.
- Sort scraps into three or four value groups rather than trying to coordinate every print.
- Cut a small test unit first and confirm the finished measurement.
- Piece enough units for the selected layout, pressing consistently.
- Measure the completed top before cutting batting and backing.
- Baste the layers and quilt with straight lines or quilting in the ditch.
- Trim the edges square and apply binding or the pattern’s self-binding finish.
The result may be compact, but the skills transfer directly to larger quilts: accurate cutting, seam consistency, pressing, layering, quilting, trimming, and edge finishing.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Scrappy Table Toppers one quilt pattern?
No. “Scrappy Table Toppers” refers to an AllPeopleQuilt roundup of multiple small tabletop projects, not one pattern with a universal block, size, or supply list.
What fabric is best for a scrappy table topper?
Quilting cotton is the safest general choice for beginners because it is stable and works well for patchwork. Batiks, solids, charm squares, seasonal prints, and mixed scraps can also work when their weight and stability are compatible.
What tools do I need to make a table topper?
A rotary cutter, self-healing cutting mat, and clear quilting ruler provide the most useful basic cutting setup. You may also need fabric scissors, clips or safety pins, an iron, thread, and a walking foot for machine quilting.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Can I use a quilted table topper as a microwave mat or hot pad?
Not automatically. Decorative quilt batting should not be assumed to be microwave-safe. Warm & Natural, for example, warns that its cotton, polyester, and blended battings are not recommended for microwave use.
The Bottom Line
Scrappy table toppers are flexible small-quilt projects rather than one fixed pattern. Pick a layout that matches your scraps, use quilting cotton with adequate contrast, cut with a rotary cutter, ruler, and mat, then add backing and batting before quilting and binding. Check the individual pattern for dimensions and quantities, and never assume ordinary quilt batting makes a topper safe for microwave use.
