A conventional pet door is a permanent opening in the building envelope. Pawport’s CES 2025 Smart Pet Door treats that opening more like a managed access point, using pet-specific collar authorization, app schedules, physical deadbolts, sealing, and optional weather protection. The result is more security-oriented than a standard flap—but it is not independently proven burglar-proof, and the indoor unit is not waterproof by itself.
What Pawport showed at CES 2025
A conventional pet door is a permanent opening in the building envelope. Pawport’s CES 2025 approach is different: its Smart Pet Door is designed to make that opening a controlled access point with pet-specific authorization, app-based schedules, physical deadbolts, sealing, and optional weather protection.

Pawport announced an upgraded Smart Pet Door on January 6, 2025, alongside an Outdoor Pet Door intended to work with the indoor unit as a two-door system. The concept is aimed at homeowners who want the convenience of free pet access without leaving an unattractive, poorly sealed, or unrestricted flap in a wall or door.

That makes Pawport interesting for renovation and construction projects, but “more secure” needs to be read accurately. Pawport documents several security-oriented design features, including steel deadbolts, a high-strength frame, pet-tag authorization, and forced-entry alerts. Those are manufacturer-documented features—not independent proof that the door is burglar-proof, bulletproof, or immune to every type of intrusion.

How the Pawport smart door controls access
The door opens when it detects an authorized pet wearing a small waterproof Bluetooth Smart Pet Tag attached to its collar. Pawport says one Smart Pet Door can pair with up to 10 tags, allowing access rules to be assigned separately to individual pets.
That distinction matters in a multi-pet household. For example, an owner could allow one dog outside during the day while keeping a cat indoors, or apply different curfews to different animals. The system is not simply identifying that “an animal is nearby”; it is intended to identify a paired pet.
- Curfews and schedules: Set permitted access times for individual pets.
- Remote control: Lock or unlock the door from the Pawport app.
- Notifications: Receive alerts about door activity and attempted forced entry.
- Adjustable detection: Set inside and outside detection distances at approximately 1 to 6 feet.
- Open duration: Choose a 5-, 10-, or 15-second opening period after activation.
- Multiple doors: Manage access across more than one Pawport door through the app.
- Smart-home integration: Pawport documents support for Google Home, Amazon Alexa, and Siri Shortcuts.
The adjustable detection distance is particularly relevant during construction planning. A door positioned close to a sidewalk, shared fence, or neighboring pet area may need different settings from one opening into a private fenced yard. It is a useful control, but it should not be treated as a replacement for a properly designed enclosure or gate.
Why Pawport says it is more secure
Pawport’s security proposition combines physical hardware with electronic authorization. Each layer addresses a different weakness of a conventional flap.
Steel deadbolts and a reinforced frame
Pawport says the Smart Pet Door uses two solid steel deadbolts that latch into a high-strength steel frame. A traditional flexible flap can be pushed, bent, or lifted more easily than a rigid, locked panel. The deadbolts are therefore the central physical-security feature of the design.
The company also describes construction using powder-coated steel and aluminum. Besides giving the product a more architectural appearance than many plastic pet doors, those materials are intended to provide a more substantial frame and door assembly.
Pet-specific authorization
A standard flap generally grants access to any animal capable of pushing through it. Pawport’s intended behavior is narrower: the door opens for a recognized pet wearing the paired tag. That can reduce unwanted access from neighborhood animals and may be useful where wildlife is a concern.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →It does not mean the system can guarantee that no animal will ever enter the property. A determined animal could approach with the authorized tag, the tag could be lost or transferred, and the surrounding fence or wall may still provide another route into the home. The benefit is controlled access through this particular opening, not total property security.
Sealing and a two-door layout
Pawport says the Smart Pet Door closes firmly to form a weather-resistant seal. At CES 2025, the company also presented the Outdoor Pet Door as a companion component. Using an exterior door together with the indoor Smart Pet Door creates a two-door arrangement, adding another barrier against pests, intruders, drafts, and thermal leakage.
For a new build or major remodel, this is more than a product-selection issue. The wall assembly, tunnel depth, exterior cladding, drainage, flashing, and interior finish all affect how well the opening performs. A high-quality door cannot compensate for a poorly detailed penetration through the building envelope.
Forced-entry alerts
Pawport says an attempt to force the door open triggers an alarm and a phone notification. This adds detection after the physical lock is challenged. It is useful as an alerting layer, but an alert is not the same as prevention or professional monitoring; the response still depends on the homeowner and the household’s broader security setup.

Weather-aware locking
The app can use rain and lightning detection to lock the door while preserving a one-way re-entry path for a pet that is already outside. That is a thoughtful response to a common problem: keeping an opening closed during severe weather without trapping an animal outdoors.
As with other connected features, the precise behavior depends on the system’s configuration and connectivity. Homeowners should verify the preferred fail-safe behavior before relying on weather automation during a storm.

The most important limitation: the indoor unit is not waterproof by itself
Pawport states that the Smart Pet Door is designed for indoor use and must be protected from direct precipitation. Buying only the indoor unit does not automatically create a weatherproof exterior wall opening.
Pawport identifies three ways to protect it:
- Pair it with the Pawport Outdoor Pet Door. This is the purpose-built two-door approach for exposed installations.
- Install it under substantial overhead coverage, such as a sheltered porch or deeply protected overhang.
- Mount it over an existing pet-door frame while retaining the original flap as a rain barrier.
This caveat affects both the construction detail and the budget. A homeowner replacing a pet door in an exposed wall should not price the Smart Pet Door as though the $699 indoor unit, by itself, were the complete exterior weather solution. The official storefront displayed the Smart Pet Door at $699 at the time of the research, with power included; accessory pricing, inventory, and “coming soon” status can change.
Retrofit installation versus a new opening
Retrofitting an existing pet door
For an existing pet door, Pawport says the Smart Pet Door mounts onto or over the existing frame and does not require professional installation. The company says the unit adjusts to fit virtually any pet door and offers a 30-day fit guarantee on its product page.
That does not eliminate the need to inspect the existing installation. Before ordering, check:
- the actual clear opening rather than the nominal size printed on the old flap;
- the condition of the surrounding door, wall, trim, and fasteners;
- whether the existing frame is square and firmly supported;
- the thickness of the door or wall;
- the exterior exposure to rain and wind;
- the location of a grounded outlet or concealed power route; and
- the pet’s shoulder width, height, and ability to use a rigid door.
Pawport publishes these approximate Smart Pet Door dimensions and existing-opening limits:
| Size | Overall dimensions | Existing-opening limit |
|---|---|---|
| Medium | 15.4 in. wide × 20.5 in. high | Up to 13.25 in. wide × 16.25 in. high |
| Large | 15.4 in. wide × 24.5 in. high | Up to 13.25 in. wide × 20.25 in. high |
| Extra Large | 15.4 in. wide × 28.5 in. high | Up to 13.25 in. wide × 24.25 in. high |
These figures are a starting point, not a substitute for measuring. A “fit guarantee” does not tell you whether a particular dog can comfortably pass through the opening or whether the surrounding wall can support the retrofit without reinforcement.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteNew, replacement, or wall installation
For a new opening, remodel, replacement installation, or wall installation, Pawport directs buyers toward its Tunnel & Frame System. The company strongly recommends professional help when there is no existing pet-door opening, although experienced DIY users may be able to complete the work.
A new installation can involve cutting structural sheathing or masonry, moving utilities, extending a tunnel through the wall, coordinating interior and exterior finishes, and maintaining weather and pest resistance. In a load-bearing wall, the opening may also require framing alterations designed by the project’s qualified contractor or engineer. This is the situation where a certified Pawport installer or appropriately qualified local contractor becomes relevant—not necessarily for a straightforward retrofit.
Power, Wi-Fi, and outage behavior
Plug-in power is included through a power supply and a 10-foot USB-C cable. Pawport also documents concealed-power or hardwired approaches, along with optional rechargeable batteries for cordless operation or backup.
The basic door operation does not require Wi-Fi, according to Pawport. Remote app control does require a stable Wi-Fi connection. Pawport says a pet can continue using the door during a Wi-Fi outage. That is an important distinction for a pet-access product: loss of internet connectivity should not necessarily prevent local tag-based operation.

A mains-power outage is a separate issue. Pawport’s battery documentation gives manufacturer estimates, not independent measurements:
- The smaller 6.4 Ah battery is intended to provide emergency backup for up to 24 hours.
- The larger 57.6 Ah battery is described as providing approximately three weeks between charges, depending on use.
Actual runtime will vary with traffic, temperature, battery age, configuration, and how often the door operates. For a household that needs outage continuity, battery capacity should be selected as part of the electrical and emergency-planning discussion rather than added automatically to every installation.
Which accessories are worth considering?
The right accessory depends on the building condition and installation objective. The complete catalog includes more components than most buyers need.

- Outdoor Pet Door: The most relevant addition for exposed locations where the indoor Smart Pet Door needs direct-rain protection and a second barrier.
- Tunnel & Frame System: Appropriate for new, remodel, or replacement openings rather than a simple over-frame retrofit.
- Rechargeable battery: Useful where power-outage operation or cordless installation matters.
- Exterior Sensor: A conditional component for layouts or environmental conditions that interfere with precise location detection. Pawport says ordinary use and complete systems with the Outdoor Pet Door generally do not require it.
- Concealed Power Kit, charging dock, and solar panel: Relevant only when the electrical route or site conditions justify them.
- Glass mount and related components: Intended for particular door or window configurations, not as a universal retrofit requirement.
In other words, do not treat the accessories list as a mandatory bundle. The outdoor door and tunnel/frame address building-envelope conditions; the battery addresses power continuity; and the exterior sensor addresses a specific detection problem.

Pawport is most compelling for homeowners who already have a pet-door opening but dislike its appearance, unrestricted access, drafts, or weak locking behavior. It also suits smart-home users who want pet access to participate in app schedules, voice control, notifications, and multi-door management.
It may be a good fit when:
- the existing opening is structurally sound and suitable for a retrofit;
- pet-specific access or curfews matter;
- wildlife and neighborhood-animal access are recurring concerns;
- the home has a sheltered location or can accommodate the Outdoor Pet Door;
- the owner values a more finished, architectural appearance; or
- the project budget supports a premium access-control system rather than a basic flap.
It may not be the right choice when the priority is the lowest initial price, when a pet will not reliably wear a collar tag, when Wi-Fi and app features have little value, or when the proposed location cannot be protected from direct precipitation. A conventional flap, a microchip door, or another electronic pet door may be more appropriate depending on the opening and the household’s requirements.
Buying and construction checklist
- Measure the pet: Confirm shoulder width, body height, and comfort with the selected clear opening.
- Measure the existing opening: Record width, height, wall or door thickness, squareness, and frame condition.
- Classify the installation: Retrofit, sheltered retrofit, exposed two-door installation, or new wall/door opening.
- Plan water management: Detail flashing, exterior sealant, drainage, cladding transitions, and overhead protection; do not assume the indoor unit is waterproof.
- Plan power: Decide between the included plug-in supply, concealed or hardwired power, and battery backup.
- Check connectivity: Confirm reliable Wi-Fi where remote control and notifications are expected.
- Choose accessories by need: Add weather, tunnel, battery, or sensor components only when the site requires them.
- Confirm installation responsibility: Use a qualified professional for structural openings, complex wall assemblies, masonry, glass, or major remodel work.
- Recheck price and availability: Pawport’s displayed price and accessory status are time-sensitive, and a complete system total varies by installation.
Bottom line for a construction project
Pawport’s CES 2025 Smart Pet Door is best understood as a premium retrofit and access-control system, not merely a better-looking flap. Its design combines pet-tag authorization, schedules, smart-home controls, steel deadbolts, a sealing door, forced-entry alerts, and optional weather and backup-power components.
The strongest case is an existing pet-door opening that needs better control and a more finished appearance, or a planned remodel where the tunnel, frame, exterior door, power, and weather protection can be coordinated from the start. The main catch is that the indoor Smart Pet Door is not waterproof on its own, and a new or exposed installation can require additional components and professional construction work.
Pawport’s documented features justify calling the system more security-oriented than a conventional unrestricted flap. They do not justify calling it burglar-proof or independently proven against every intrusion scenario. Treat it as one controlled opening within the home’s larger envelope and security design.
Frequently Asked Questions
