A school design checklist should begin with the people who need to use the building: students, staff, families, and visitors, including people with disabilities. For a U.S. project, federal accessibility guidance is an important starting point, but it does not determine local toilet counts or supply a complete building, fire, or school-safety checklist. Confirm the codes adopted for the project’s jurisdiction, the school’s age group and use, and whether the work is new construction or an alteration before treating any design detail as a final requirement.

How to use this school building design checklist

Use the items below during programming and design review, then assign each applicable item to a responsible project reviewer and record the controlling local code or standard. This is a U.S.-oriented planning checklist, not a permit checklist. Requirements can vary with the jurisdiction, adopted code editions, project type, building history, owner, and funding.

  1. Define the project. Record the jurisdiction, school type and age range, intended uses, new-build or renovation scope, building construction and alteration history, and applicable owner or funding context.
  2. Confirm the governing requirements. Ask the authority having jurisdiction and qualified design professionals to identify adopted building, plumbing, fire and life-safety, accessibility, and school-facility requirements. The federal sources summarized here do not establish local fixture counts or all technical requirements.
  3. Review design and operation together. Check that accessible routes and spaces work with planned furniture and daily use, and include inspection and repair responsibilities in the operating plan.
