Keep a backyard pool clean by testing chlorine and pH at least twice a day, maintaining sanitizer at the right level for your pool, brushing surfaces regularly, and keeping circulation and filtration in good working order. If algae appears, test the water and check the equipment before choosing a treatment; no single chemical dose works for every pool.

Test the water at least twice a day

Test chlorine and pH at least twice daily, and test more often when the pool is heavily used. The CDC recommends a DPD test kit for the most accurate chlorine and pH measurements; test strips are less accurate. Follow your kit’s instructions and make sure its measurement range suits your pool. The CDC warns that chlorine above 10 ppm can bleach out some tests and produce a falsely low or zero result.

For residential pools, the CDC’s guidance sets a pH range of 7.0–7.8. Its minimum chlorine recommendation is at least 1 ppm when cyanuric acid is not in use, and at least 2 ppm when cyanuric acid or stabilized chlorine is used. These are CDC recommendations, not a replacement for local requirements or the instructions for your sanitizer and test products. See the CDC’s home pool and hot tub water treatment and testing guidance.

Brush surfaces and remove debris

Brush pool walls and other surfaces regularly, with the schedule suited to your pool rather than a universal interval. Brushing helps dislodge films that can cling to surfaces. Skim leaves and other debris, and keep skimmer and pump baskets clear according to the equipment instructions.

The CDC-hosted 2024 Model Aquatic Health Code Annex says most algaecides are reasonably effective when used according to EPA-accepted label directions and paired with frequent, thorough brushing. The annex addresses aquatic facilities broadly, so its technical point supports brushing as part of algae prevention; it does not establish a single home-pool schedule.

Keep circulation and filtration working

Maintain circulation and filtration according to the pool equipment manufacturer’s recommendations. Check the equipment instructions for operation and routine care rather than assuming public-pool schedules apply to a backyard pool. Poor circulation or neglected filtration can leave areas of water and surfaces insufficiently treated, so inspect these systems when water becomes cloudy or algae appears.

Use algaecide only as directed

Algaecide is a tool, not a substitute for testing, brushing, or maintaining circulation. Before buying or applying one, check that it is registered and labeled for swimming pools, then follow the label for use and compatibility with your pool and water features.

  • Copper-based products: The CDC-hosted annex describes these as effective against green and mustard algae, but improper use can stain pool surfaces.
  • Quat products: Simple quaternary ammonium products can foam if overdosed, particularly around water features.

Compare products by active ingredient, label directions, compatibility, and possible staining or foaming—not by assuming all algaecides work the same way. The annex’s discussion is in section 5.7.4.4.4 of the 2024 Model Aquatic Health Code Annex, fifth edition.

What to do if algae appears

  1. Test the water: Measure chlorine and pH with a reliable kit, and account for the possibility that very high chlorine can make some tests read falsely low.
  2. Inspect circulation and filtration: Check baskets and equipment, and consult the manufacturer’s instructions for maintenance.
  3. Brush affected surfaces: Brush thoroughly to dislodge algae and films from pool surfaces.
  4. Choose a pool-labeled treatment: Use only a product labeled for swimming pools, following its directions and compatibility warnings. Do not guess at a dose: the right treatment depends on pool volume, current readings, pool type, and product instructions.

If algae persists, the underlying issue may involve water chemistry or circulation as well as the visible growth. Recheck readings and equipment rather than repeatedly adding chemicals without diagnosing the cause.

Handle pool chemicals safely

Pool chemicals can cause serious injuries. CDC reports about 4,500 U.S. emergency department visits each year from pool chemical injuries, with more than one-third involving children or teens. Follow each product’s label and use the protective equipment it specifies.
