Saunas can offer a relaxing heat session and a place to socialize, and research suggests possible cardiovascular and symptom-related benefits. But the evidence is mixed and does not show that sauna use cures disease, guarantees better sleep, or replaces medical care. Seattle has a visible sauna scene; available sources do not establish that saunas are the hottest wellness trend across Washington.
What people value about sauna use
Sauna bathing exposes the body to heat. People commonly describe using it to relax, reduce stress, ease pain, socialize, or support sleep. In an online Global Sauna Survey conducted from October 2016 to October 2017, 482 respondents who regularly used saunas submitted valid responses; 83.5% reported sleep benefits. Those answers describe respondents’ experiences, not proof that sauna use caused better sleep or treated a health condition. The survey authors’ 2019 report is cross-sectional and self-reported.
What clinical studies can—and cannot—tell us
A 2018 systematic review examined 40 clinical studies of regular dry sauna bathing, involving 3,855 participants. Only 13 were randomized controlled trials, and most studies enrolled fewer than 40 people. The studies used varied methods and measured different outcomes, so those totals are not a pooled estimate of effectiveness. The authors described potential benefits but called for higher-quality evidence, including research on adverse effects and on which schedules and populations might benefit. Read the systematic review.
One frequently cited long-term study followed 2,315 middle-aged men in eastern Finland for a median of 20.7 years. Compared with one sauna session per week, four to seven sessions per week were associated with lower sudden cardiac death risk; the adjusted hazard ratio reported for that comparison was 0.37. The study was observational: participants were not randomly assigned to sauna schedules, and the finding does not establish that sauna use caused lower risk. It is not a recommended schedule for readers or proof that the result applies to every population. The 2015 JAMA Internal Medicine study reports the cohort findings.

Taken together, this evidence supports cautious interest in sauna bathing, not broad promises. The cited studies do not establish that saunas detoxify the body, cause meaningful fat loss, or cure disease. Sweating is a heat response that also means fluid loss; it should not be presented as evidence of toxin removal or fat burning.
Why saunas are drawing attention in Seattle
UW Medicine’s February 9, 2026, article describes a growing Seattle sauna scene and names mobile saunas on Lake Washington, at Alki, and at Golden Gardens. A 2025 Global Wellness Institute micro-trends report also discusses communal sauna concepts, including mobile pods and bathhouses. Together, these sources point to visibility in Seattle and broader interest in social sauna settings, but neither measures Washington-wide participation, market growth, or a statewide ranking.

- 【66-150℉/1-99mins Timer】The max temperature of the sauna room can reach 150℉. It is recommended that beginners start with low temperatures. The sauna room can be set with a timer ranging from 1 to 99 mins, and the recommended usage time is 10 to 15 minutes. Remember to replenish water before and after taking a sauna.
- 【Infrared Sauna Room】 This sauna room is equipped with 7 therapy light, including red, blue, green, yellow, purple, cyan and natural light. Different colors have different therapeutic effects, which can promote blood circulation, relieve muscle pain, improve skin condition, reduce anxiety and relax the mood, etc.
- 【Bluetooth/MP3/Radio】The sauna room is equipped with Bluetooth, MP3 and radio functions, allowing you to enjoy music while taking a sauna. There are two speakers in the sauna room - the stereo speakers bring a better music feast.
- 【Convenient Design】 The sauna room is equipped with a bookshelf, a towel rack and a cup holder, allowing you to read and replenish water while taking a sauna. There is a ventilation hole at the top to allow fresh air to flow and reduce the feeling of stuffiness.
One plausible explanation for the appeal is that sauna visits combine heat and relaxation with social time, and some venues pair them with cold-water experiences. That is an interpretation of the reported offerings and survey responses, not a measured explanation of why Washington residents use saunas. UW Medicine’s Seattle overview describes local offerings and health considerations; the Global Wellness Institute’s 2025 trend report discusses communal sauna concepts more broadly.
How sauna formats differ
“Sauna” can refer to different heat environments. Temperature and humidity affect how a session feels, and a format that suits one person may not suit another. A 2026 rapid review from the National Collaborating Centre for Environmental Health (NCCEH) describes the following typical conditions:

| Format | How it heats | Typical conditions reported |
|---|---|---|
| Traditional dry or Finnish sauna | Heated air and rocks; water may be poured on the rocks to raise humidity. | UW Medicine gives a typical range of 150–195°F. The NCCEH review describes dry-sauna temperatures of 80–100°C and lower relative humidity; actual conditions vary by facility. |
| Infrared sauna | Infrared energy warms the body while the surrounding air is cooler than in a traditional sauna. | The NCCEH review gives a typical range of 48–60°C. |
| Steam room or steam sauna | Steam creates a high-humidity environment at lower temperatures than dry saunas. | The NCCEH review describes temperatures up to 50°C and humidity of 80–100%. |
These ranges describe formats, not a guarantee of the conditions at a particular venue. The cited systematic review does not establish one type as best for a particular health condition. If you are choosing a facility or planning a home installation, consider heating method, temperature and humidity, comfort and session duration, access and cost, space and installation needs, ventilation and maintenance, and whether evidence addresses the outcome you care about. The NCCEH rapid review provides an overview of health, environmental, and operational considerations.

Heat tolerance varies. UW Medicine physician Iman Majd, MD, advises keeping sessions to no more than 20 minutes at a time, staying hydrated, and consulting a clinician before sauna use if you have cardiovascular disease. The NCCEH review notes that some people may need shorter exposure and that even 10 minutes may be too long for certain individuals. These cautions are not a universal ideal schedule: follow the facility’s instructions, monitor how you feel, and leave if you become unwell.

Check health conditions, pregnancy, and medications
Guidance differs in how it describes cautions, but both UW Medicine and the NCCEH review identify circumstances where individual advice matters. These include cardiovascular disease, high or low blood pressure, diabetes, seizure disorders, significant obesity, older age, pregnancy, alcohol use, and some medications. UW Medicine also lists active infection or fever, recent surgery or bleeding, open wounds or skin infections, poor circulation or severe vascular disease, and certain medications among reasons to avoid or take care with heat therapy. Ask a clinician about your own condition, pregnancy, or medication rather than assuming a sauna is appropriate.
Manage heat, hydration, and the facility environment
- Drink water and avoid treating sweating as a substitute for hydration.
- Use the venue’s temperature and time guidance, and stop if you feel unwell.
- Look for clear user rules, temperature monitoring, cleaning and disinfection practices, ventilation, and moisture management.
- For a home sauna, a thermometer and visible clock or timer can help you monitor temperature and session length. They do not make sauna use safe for everyone.
- Be aware of slip, burn, fire, and heat-exhaustion hazards, and know how to exit or summon help.
Be cautious with cold plunges and contrast sessions
A cold plunge is not a required part of sauna use. UW Medicine warns that sudden cold-water exposure can trigger a cold-shock response and temporarily raise blood pressure; it may be dangerous for people with heart conditions. The NCCEH review also discusses risks from sudden cold exposure and advises people with medical conditions to avoid temperature extremes. Do not assume that alternating hot and cold is suitable for you.

Saunas offer a form of heat exposure that many people find relaxing and social, while clinical research suggests possible benefits that remain qualified by small, varied studies and observational evidence. Seattle’s mobile and communal offerings are visible, but the available sources do not show how widespread sauna use is across Washington. Choose a format for comfort and practical fit, keep safety in view, and treat health claims as possibilities rather than promises.
