Samsung’s Galaxy Upcycling at Home turned certain older Galaxy phones into SmartThings-connected sound and light sensors. Announced as a beta on April 21, 2021, it was a clever way to reuse a device—but current availability is not confirmed, so it should not be treated as a feature every Galaxy owner can still set up.
What Galaxy Upcycling at Home did
Samsung’s broader Galaxy Upcycling effort aimed to give older phones another useful job. Galaxy Upcycling at Home was a specific 2021 initiative: it used a phone’s microphone and ambient-light sensor as inputs for Samsung’s SmartThings connected-home platform. The phone could send a notification or help trigger an action on another compatible device. Samsung presented the idea as a way to extend a phone’s useful life and reduce electronic waste, rather than discard it immediately. The announcement did not quantify the program’s environmental impact. Samsung’s April 21, 2021 announcement

What the phone could sense
Sounds
Samsung described detection for sounds such as a baby crying, a dog barking, a cat meowing, or a knock at the door. When the phone recognized a selected sound, it could alert the owner’s current phone. Samsung also said users could choose to save certain recordings and listen to detected audio remotely. The announcement gave no detection-accuracy rate, so this should be understood as an experimental alert feature, not guaranteed sound recognition.

The phone’s ambient-light sensor could measure brightness. A user could set a threshold and use SmartThings to trigger another connected device when the room became darker than that level—for example, switching on a light or television. The phone was therefore more than a standalone alarm when paired with compatible SmartThings devices.

Which phones were eligible—and what may block setup now
For the original beta, Samsung listed Galaxy S, Note, and Z-series phones released from 2018 onward, beginning with the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy Note9, running Android 9 or later. The beta initially launched in the United States, United Kingdom, and South Korea; availability could vary by market and carrier. Samsung’s original eligibility and launch details
That Android 9 requirement is historical, not a guarantee that a phone can install today’s SmartThings app. Samsung Canada’s current compatibility page lists Android 12 or later with at least 3 GB of RAM for the app, and says requirements can change with updates. These are separate conditions: the 2021 donor-phone requirement and the current app requirement. Check compatibility for your country and device before relying on setup. - Open the SmartThings app.
- Go to SmartThings Labs and enroll the old Galaxy phone in Galaxy Upcycling at Home, if the option is available.
- Choose sound sensing or light sensing.
- Set up sound notifications or a brightness threshold and any desired SmartThings automation.
- Position the phone so its microphone or light sensor can detect the relevant conditions.
- Keep it connected to reliable power for extended use.
Samsung said it added battery-optimization solutions to reduce power drain. That does not remove the practical need for sustained power during long monitoring sessions. Droid Life’s contemporary description of the SmartThings Labs workflow
Where the idea is useful—and where it is not
Reasonable experiments
- Getting an extra alert when a pet makes noise.
- Trying a simple sound alert or light-triggered automation with hardware you already own.
- Learning how SmartThings automations work without first buying another sensor.
Not a substitute for safety equipment
The documented functions were sound and light sensing—not continuous video, two-way talk, a professional security system, or emergency monitoring. Samsung did not establish guaranteed detection or uptime, nor medical or childcare safety certification. A crying alert may be a supplementary notification, but it should never be the sole way an adult monitors a child or responds to a safety-critical situation.

Reliability, placement, power, and privacy
Expect imperfect detection
Background television, conversation, traffic, or other noise could prompt a false alert; an unusual or quiet sound could be missed. Samsung described improved AI sound recognition but provided no accuracy rate or independent test result. Placement matters too: furniture can muffle a knock, a television can confuse sound sensing, and a nearby lamp can distort the light reading.
Check the phone before leaving it in service
- Use a phone that boots reliably and has working microphone and light sensors, Wi-Fi, and a battery that is not swollen or badly degraded.
- Keep the phone ventilated, out of bedding and enclosed spaces, and away from direct sunlight. Use a sound charger and cable; stop if the phone becomes unusually hot.
- Do not leave a visibly damaged or swollen-battery phone plugged in unattended.
- Remember that alerts and automations depend on power, network access, the Samsung account, the app, and the receiving device. An outage, sign-out, crash, or changed permission can interrupt them.
Be deliberate about microphone use
A sound-sensing phone may listen for selected sounds over extended periods. Samsung said users could choose to save certain recordings, but the announcement does not establish current details about processing location, retention, or storage duration. Review current Samsung account, SmartThings, and privacy settings, and tell household members or guests when an always-listening device is in use. Avoid sensitive spaces unless everyone affected understands the arrangement.

Reuse the phone or choose another option?
| Option | Best fit | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Existing Galaxy phone | Someone with a working device who wants to experiment with sound or light sensing. | Current feature availability and app compatibility are uncertain; continuous use needs power and careful placement. |
| Dedicated smart sensor | A user who wants a purpose-built sensor for a connected home. | Requires buying more hardware; support and compatibility vary by product and market. |
| Dedicated baby or pet monitor | Someone who needs features such as video, two-way audio, or night vision. | Costs more than reusing a phone and still depends on its own power and network conditions. |
| Recycle or trade in | An owner whose phone is damaged, unsupported, unsafe to keep powered, or no longer useful. | Ends the chance of reuse; any credit depends on a current regional offer. |
SmartThings integrations are most useful if you already have compatible devices. Samsung advises checking compatibility and registering devices through its app; supported products and requirements can vary by country and change over time. Samsung SmartThings compatibility list
What “upcycling” means here
Upcycling gives the phone another job; it is not the same as recycling the phone’s materials. Keeping a working device useful for longer can delay disposal, but Samsung’s cited announcement did not publish a lifecycle analysis or a measured carbon or waste reduction for this program. If the phone cannot be used safely or productively, responsible recycling is a better endpoint than leaving it plugged in indefinitely.
