Samsung’s Bespoke Smart Fridges Can Build Instacart Grocery Orders—With Your Approval

Samsung’s selected Bespoke refrigerators can connect recognized foods with Instacart grocery shopping, but the feature is assisted replenishment—not fully automatic ordering.

Samsung announced a multiyear partnership with Instacart on January 2, 2025, to connect selected Bespoke refrigerators with grocery shopping from the refrigerator screen. Samsung’s AI Vision Inside can identify certain foods, while Instacart matches those items with products from participating local retailers. The result is assisted grocery replenishment—not a refrigerator that independently buys everything your household needs.

The feature is aimed at U.S. consumers and was announced for selected 2025 Bespoke refrigerators with screens and AI Vision Inside, including models using Samsung’s 32-inch AI Family Hub+ and 9-inch AI Home displays. Samsung also said compatible existing AI Family Hub+ refrigerators would receive the experience through firmware updates during 2025. Exact compatibility and current rollout status still need to be checked by model, region, firmware, and account.

How the Samsung–Instacart system works

The integration combines two separate systems:

  • Samsung provides the appliance, display, AI Vision Inside recognition, and food-inventory experience.
  • Instacart provides product matching, retailer selection, cart and checkout functions, and delivery or pickup fulfillment.

In practical terms, the workflow is:

Food visible in the refrigerator → Samsung recognition → inventory or replenishment suggestion → Instacart product match → customer review → checkout.

Samsung’s announcement says users can replenish favorite grocery items and place orders through Instacart from the refrigerator screen. It does not establish that the appliance can silently submit recurring orders without approval.

  • COLOR CUSTOMIZATION: Customize the design of your french door french door refrigerator with changeable door panels. Choose from a variety of colors and two finishes to create a space that fits your style.
  • BEVERAGE CENTER: Quick access to refreshingly cool, filtered water two ways. Choose from an internal dispenser or a built-in pitcher that automatically refills, with the option to infuse with a flavor.
  • EXTRA LARGE CAPACITY: With 29 cu. ft. of capacity, this spacious french door french door refrigerator is designed for convenience, offering flexibility and organization to store and access all your favorite foods with ease.
  • DUAL ICE MAKER WITH ICE BITES: Enjoy your favorite beverage with your choice of ice. Select from cubed ice or Ice Bites that chill your drink faster.
  • FLEXZONE DRAWER: The FlexZone Drawer is customizable with 5 different temperature settings. From french door refrigerator to soft freeze, this middle drawer can store everything from fruit and vegetables to your favorite meat & seafood.

Instacart’s product-matching layer also cannot make every grocery decision automatically. “Milk,” for example, could mean different brands, sizes, fat percentages, prices, and dietary alternatives. The customer should still confirm the exact product, quantity, retailer, substitutions, delivery or pickup time, and fees.

Samsung’s announcement describes the partnership and its intended U.S. experience. Grocery Dive also characterized the deal as a shoppable-fridge partnership involving ordering from refrigerator screens.

Which refrigerators qualify?

Do not assume that every Samsung Bespoke refrigerator supports the feature. The announcement identified:

  • 2025 Bespoke refrigerators with screens and AI Vision Inside;
  • models with the 32-inch AI Family Hub+ display;
  • the newer 9-inch AI Home display; and
  • existing AI Family Hub+ refrigerators equipped with AI Vision Inside, which Samsung intended to update during 2025.

When Samsung announced the partnership, it said the exact applicable model list and update schedule were still to be determined. The available announcement therefore does not prove that every promised model received the feature, or that it is active on every compatible refrigerator in 2026.

Compatibility checklist

Before buying a refrigerator—or assuming an existing one qualifies—verify:

  1. The exact refrigerator model number.
  2. Whether the model has AI Vision Inside.
  3. Whether it uses the relevant Family Hub or AI Home software.
  4. Whether its firmware is current.
  5. Whether it is connected to Wi-Fi.
  6. Whether you have a Samsung account and an Instacart account.
  7. Whether Instacart supports participating retailers and fulfillment in your U.S. ZIP code.

Samsung says features can vary by model and region. A retailer’s product description or a generic Bespoke label is not enough to confirm compatibility; use the model-specific Samsung support or product information available when you make the purchase.

What AI Vision Inside can—and cannot—recognize

Samsung said that, as of November 2024, AI Vision Inside could recognize up to 37 food items, including examples such as fresh fruits and vegetables. That is a defined recognition set, not an inventory system that understands every object in the refrigerator.

Samsung’s own limitations are important:

  • Food in refrigerator door bins cannot be identified or listed.
  • Food in the freezer cannot be identified or listed.
  • Items outside the recognizable set require manual names and expiration-date entry.
  • The recognition models may be updated through deep-learning software.
  • Applicable features vary by model and region.

The system may also struggle with items that are partially hidden, moved between shelves, placed in opaque containers, or confused with similar products. Recognition is not the same as reliable freshness or spoilage detection. It should not be described as continuously understanding the whole refrigerator or knowing with certainty when food has run out.

Even when the refrigerator recognizes an item, it may identify only a broad category. A recognized “yogurt” still needs a suitable brand, flavor, size, and quantity selected through the shopping experience.

What the customer still has to do

The expected workflow, based on Samsung’s announcement rather than a confirmed final set of menu labels, is:

  1. Connect the compatible refrigerator to Wi-Fi.
  2. Sign in to or configure a Samsung account.
  3. Sign in to or link an Instacart account.
  4. Allow AI Vision Inside to build or update the food inventory.
  5. Review recognized items and correct errors or add missing foods manually.
  6. Select items to replenish.
  7. Let Instacart match those items with products and participating retailers.
  8. Check the brand, size, quantity, price, substitutions, delivery or pickup time, and fees.
  9. Approve and complete checkout.

This distinction matters. The refrigerator can shorten the path from seeing a low-stock staple to building a grocery cart, but it does not remove the customer’s responsibility to review the order.

What “available” means

There are four different availability questions:

Question What the evidence supports
Was the partnership announced? Yes. Samsung announced it on January 2, 2025.
Which hardware was named? Selected 2025 Bespoke screen-equipped refrigerators with AI Vision Inside, including 32-inch AI Family Hub+ and 9-inch AI Home models.
Were existing units included? Samsung intended compatible AI Family Hub+ units with AI Vision Inside to receive a firmware update during 2025.
Is it active on every qualifying refrigerator today? Not established by the announcement. Check the exact model, firmware, region, and account status.
Will grocery ordering work everywhere? Not necessarily. Retailer participation, local inventory, delivery or pickup coverage, fees, and service windows vary by location.

“Available” can therefore mean that the partnership exists, that the hardware is capable, that software has been delivered, or that a usable Instacart order can be completed locally. These are not the same thing.

Where the feature could be useful

The integration is most persuasive for a household that already owns—or is already considering—a compatible Samsung refrigerator and regularly uses Instacart. It may reduce the friction of maintaining a list for predictable staples, particularly in households where several people share grocery responsibility.

It is less compelling when most food is kept in door bins, the freezer, drawers, containers, or a pantry; when the household buys specialty or local products; or when precise brand and package-size choices matter. It also offers limited value to someone who rarely uses grocery delivery or whose preferred stores are unavailable through Instacart.

The main trade-offs

Convenience versus accuracy

Recognition can reduce manual list entry, but a missed item or incorrect product match can create a bad cart. Review is not optional if price, dietary requirements, brand, or quantity matters.

Integration versus ecosystem lock-in

The experience depends on Samsung hardware and software, a Samsung account, Wi-Fi, an Instacart account, and participating retailers. Consider whether you would still be satisfied with the refrigerator if the partnership, software support, or local retailer coverage changed.

Screen utility versus appliance cost

The Instacart connection is an added convenience feature in an expensive appliance category. It does not by itself demonstrate better cooling performance, capacity, energy use, reliability, or value than a conventional refrigerator.

Convenience versus fees

Instacart ordering may involve retailer pricing differences, service fees, delivery fees, minimums, promotions, and substitutions. The integration does not guarantee lower grocery costs.

Connected data versus privacy

A connected refrigerator and grocery account can involve information about household food habits, shopping patterns, dietary preferences, and account activity. The sources reviewed do not establish the complete data-sharing or retention terms for this specific integration. Before linking accounts, read the current Samsung and Instacart privacy controls and account settings rather than relying on general claims about smart-appliance privacy.

Alternatives to a smart refrigerator grocery workflow

  • Conventional refrigerator plus a shared phone list: inexpensive, transparent, and platform-neutral, but entirely manual.
  • Instacart on a phone or web browser: provides the grocery service without requiring specialized refrigerator hardware, although users must remember or inspect what they need.
  • Direct retailer grocery apps: may provide better loyalty pricing or retailer-specific inventory, but do not offer the described Samsung camera connection.
  • Samsung refrigerator without Instacart: retains supported display, food-management, and connected-home functions while avoiding dependence on Instacart for fulfillment.
  • Manual household inventory systems: shared notes, recurring lists, or recipe apps are less automatic but often easier to correct and cheaper to maintain.

Should this influence a refrigerator purchase?

For an existing compatible Samsung owner who already uses Instacart, the feature could be a useful reduction in grocery-list friction. For a new refrigerator buyer, it should be a secondary consideration—not the primary reason to pay more for a screen-equipped appliance.

First compare the fundamentals: refrigerator capacity and layout, cooling performance, energy use, installation requirements, reliability expectations, service access, and price. Then verify that the exact model supports the software experience you want and that Instacart serves your preferred retailers.

The strongest conclusion supported by Samsung’s announcement is narrower than “the fridge shops for you.” Samsung is trying to connect physical food recognition with grocery commerce. That may make replenishment more convenient, but the system recognizes only selected items, has clear visibility limits, depends on local service coverage, and still leaves product selection and checkout under the customer’s control.
