Do not charge it, repeatedly test it, or put it in rice. Drying removes moisture, but it does not necessarily remove salt, sugar, minerals, acids, detergent, or other residue that can continue damaging electronics.
First 60 seconds
- Move away from electrical hazards. If a mains-powered device is in water, switch off power at the breaker rather than reaching into the water.
- Disconnect the charger, power cable, dock, or other external power—only if doing so is safe.
- Turn the device off. If it is already off, leave it off.
- Remove a removable battery, case, SIM card, memory card, cables, and accessories.
- Hold openings downward so liquid can drain. Blot the exterior with a lint-free cloth.
- Put it in a dry, ventilated place with gentle room-temperature airflow.
Stop handling it if the battery is hot, swollen, smoking, bubbling, hissing, melting, leaking, or producing an unusual chemical smell.
Why water-damaged electronics fail
Liquid creates two separate problems. First, while power is connected, it can bridge contacts that should remain electrically separate and cause a short circuit. Second, water and the substances it leaves behind can attack connectors, solder joints, charging circuits, battery contacts, shields, and other components.
Corrosion can begin quickly, and a dry exterior does not prove that the inside is safe. A device may work for a while and then develop intermittent charging, failed speakers, battery problems, ghost touches, keyboard faults, or complete failure. iFixit explains why liquid or sediment bridging electrical connections is especially dangerous while a device remains powered.

The three biggest mistakes
- Turning it back on: powering a wet circuit can turn a recoverable spill into permanent damage.
- Charging it: a charger supplies the power that liquid damage makes dangerous.
- Using rice or heat: rice does not remove internal contamination and particles can enter ports and openings. Heat can damage batteries, adhesives, screens, seals, and plastics. Apple specifically warns against rice and foreign objects in a wet iPhone connector; iFixit also rejects rice as a reliable repair method.
Is the device or battery dangerous?
A wet circuit board is not the same safety problem as a damaged lithium-ion battery. Treat these signs as an emergency:
- Unexpected heat, smoke, vapor, hissing, bubbling, or crackling.
- Swelling, a distorted enclosure, melting, leakage, or a chemical odor.
- A punctured, crushed, visibly wet, or otherwise damaged battery.
- A mains-powered appliance that may still be energized.
Keep people and flammable materials away. Do not put a damaged lithium-ion battery or a device containing one in household garbage or a normal recycling bin. The U.S. EPA recommends contacting the manufacturer, retailer, state waste agency, or household hazardous-waste program. Follow local emergency guidance rather than improvising fire-extinguisher or battery-disposal advice.
The liquid matters

| Tap water | May leave minerals and can conduct electricity while present. |
| Distilled water | Less residue does not make it safe while it is inside a powered device. |
| Salt water | Highly conductive and corrosive. |
| Pool water | Chlorine and other chemicals may leave damaging residue. |
| Soda or juice | Sugars and acids remain sticky and corrosive after evaporation. |
| Coffee or tea | May contain acids, oils, sugar, or milk. |
| Milk | Leaves organic residue and fats. |
| Detergent | May leave alkaline or surfactant residue. |
| Flood or toilet water | Combines chemical contamination with biological hazards. |
Do not automatically rinse every device under a tap. iFixit gives conditional fresh-water rinsing guidance for some non-fresh-water phone exposures, but the right response depends on the device, the liquid, and whether the battery and sensitive components can be isolated.
How to dry a phone or tablet
- Disconnect the cable and turn the phone off.
- Remove the case, SIM card, and memory card if present.
- With the charging port facing downward, gently tap the device against your hand to encourage drainage. Do not shake it aggressively.
- Blot the outside and place the device somewhere dry and ventilated.
- Use gentle room-temperature airflow from a fan if available.
- Do not connect a cable until the port and exterior are fully dry and the manufacturer’s instructions permit it.
For an iPhone liquid-detection alert, Apple says the connector may take up to 24 hours to dry fully. That guidance applies to the connector alert, not every submerged phone. Samsung warns that internal corrosion can occur even when a Galaxy device appears to work and recommends prompt inspection after water exposure; see its water-exposure guidance.
Tablets are harder to isolate because their batteries are commonly glued inside. After submersion, contamination, failed shutdown, or any battery warning sign, professional inspection is safer than repeated drying and testing. A water-resistance rating is model-specific and is not a promise that the device is permanently waterproof. Age, impact, repairs, seals, depth, duration, and liquid type all matter.

How to handle a wet laptop
- Disconnect the AC adapter immediately.
- Shut the laptop down. Do not boot it to back up files.
- If the design permits and there is no battery warning, disconnect or remove the battery.
- Remove USB devices, docks, memory cards, and other accessories.
- Open the screen widely and place the laptop in a controlled keyboard-down or tent-like drainage position.
- Blot visible liquid and arrange internal inspection after a substantial spill.
iFixit’s laptop guidance emphasizes shutdown, battery disconnection, drainage, and avoiding rice. A spill-resistant keyboard does not guarantee protection for the motherboard, trackpad, battery, display cable, or charging circuit.
Residue beneath a keyboard can cause delayed sticky keys. A laptop that works only on its charger may have battery or charging-circuit damage. Modern laptops may use soldered storage, so board-level repair can be important if the files matter.
Other devices need different treatment
Game consoles
Disconnect the console, power supply, and accessories. Do not test it. Power supplies and internal capacitors may present hazards even after unplugging. Soda, juice, and flood-water exposure require internal cleaning, not just evaporation.

Cameras
Remove the battery and memory card. Do not repeatedly extend or retract a powered lens. Keep the card separate and dry; copy its contents only when doing so is safe.
Earbuds and charging cases
Do not put wet earbuds into the case or connect the case to power. The case contains a battery and charging electronics. Replacement is often more economical than board-level repair, but do not assume the earbuds are safe simply because the outside feels dry.
Keyboards and mice
Unplug wired devices and remove batteries from wireless ones. A mechanical keyboard may be repairable after disassembly and cleaning; membrane keyboards and sealed wireless devices may not be economical to repair. Never return a wet wireless device to its charging dock.

Mains-powered appliances
Televisions, monitors, desktop power supplies, kitchen appliances, power strips, and similar equipment should not be treated like phones. Unplugging may not eliminate every hazard. An immersed or flood-exposed mains device needs qualified electrical inspection.
Drying is not cleaning
Air-drying is reasonable first aid for a minor exposure when opening the device is unsafe or impractical. It is not a substitute for internal inspection after submersion or contaminated-liquid exposure.
Professional or experienced board-level cleaning may involve complete disassembly, removing appropriate connectors and shields, inspecting for residue, and cleaning compatible exposed circuit-board components. iFixit recommends 90% or higher isopropyl alcohol for suitable exposed boards. This is an advanced procedure, not a universal instruction to pour alcohol into an assembled device.
Isopropyl alcohol is flammable and is not automatically safe for batteries, displays, camera modules, adhesives, coatings, speakers, microphones, rubber parts, plastics, or every connector. Never use it on a powered device. Do not casually use acetone, ketones, naphtha, household cleaners, or arbitrary contact sprays. Follow a model-specific repair guide and the chemical manufacturer’s safety instructions.
Should you open it?
Opening may make sense when the device has a removable battery, the correct tools are available, a model-specific guide exists, and the reader has the skill to work safely. It can improve access to trapped liquid and residue.

Do not open a device that is connected to mains power, contains a hot or swollen battery, has high-voltage components, or holds irreplaceable data unless qualified professional help is unavailable and the risks are understood. Opening can tear cables, puncture batteries, compromise water seals, affect warranty or insurance claims, and make later service harder.
When is it safe to turn it on?
Do not power it on after submersion, salt water, soda, juice, detergent, flood water, visible corrosion, odor, heat, swelling, a previous spark or short, or any battery concern. Do not power on a mains appliance after immersion without professional inspection.
A cautious test may be reasonable only after a minor external exposure, complete disconnection, thorough drying, no safety warning signs, and manufacturer-approved conditions. There is no universal 24-, 48-, or 72-hour guarantee. For internal liquid damage, inspection and decontamination matter more than waiting a fixed number of hours.
If it boots, back up irreplaceable data immediately. Then check charging, battery behavior, speakers, microphones, cameras, buttons, biometric sensors, ports, wireless connections, display behavior, and keyboard operation. Stop if it heats, smells unusual, reboots, drains rapidly, or behaves erratically. Do not repeatedly power-cycle a dead device.
If it turns on but behaves strangely

These are possible causes, not definitive diagnoses. New symptoms after liquid exposure are a reason to stop normal use and seek inspection.

Protecting data comes before saving the hardware
If the device still works safely, copy photos, documents, contacts, authentication codes, and other irreplaceable files first. Do not spend time running exhaustive tests before creating a backup.
If it does not work, do not repeatedly charge it, replace random parts, factory-reset it, or attempt repeated boots. Tell a repair shop that data preservation is the priority. Ask whether the storage is removable, encrypted, soldered, or tied to the original board; whether the original board will be preserved; what diagnostic fees apply; how privacy is handled; and whether the service offers any no-data/no-fee terms.
Replacing a motherboard may make the device usable but may not restore its original data. Encryption, soldered storage, and board damage can make recovery difficult, expensive, or impossible.
