AI Energy Mode

Samsung’s AI Washing Machines Really Do Save Energy—but Not Every Model Saves 30%

Samsung has credible evidence that its AI Energy Mode reduces electricity use in real households—but the headline needs qualification. Carbon Trust Assurance Ltd. verified energy savings across approximately 187,000 connected, high-efficiency Samsung washing machines in 126 countries. The assessed fleet saved 5.02 GWh of electricity during the July 2024–June 2025 period, which Samsung describes as roughly 30% lower consumption.

That is stronger than ordinary “AI-powered” marketing. It does not prove that every Samsung AI washer saves 30% in every home, that the AI feature alone beats every conventional ENERGY STAR washer, or that buying a more expensive connected model will necessarily pay for itself.

What Samsung’s evidence actually shows

Samsung says Carbon Trust Assurance Ltd. independently verified the energy and emissions reductions associated with AI Energy Mode using the Decarbonizing the Use-Phase of Connected Devices (DUCD) specification.

The reported assessment covered:

  • Approximately 187,000 washing machines.
  • Machines in 126 countries.
  • Usage between July 2024 and June 2025.
  • Select Samsung high-efficiency models connected to SmartThings.
  • Devices that had activated AI Energy Mode at least once.

Carbon Trust Assurance verified 5.02 GWh of energy savings and 2,084 tonnes of avoided CO2-equivalent emissions. Samsung reported that the machines consumed 12.28 GWh while the mode was enabled. Using the reported figures, the implied comparison baseline is approximately 17.30 GWh:

Samsung Smart 4.7 Cu Ft Top Load Washer & 7.4 Cu Ft Electric Dryer, Sensor Stops Overdrying, Low Vibration Quiet Wash, WaterJet w/Power Cords, Hoses, Vent Duct, 1 Year CPS Protection Bundle (Black)
  • Exclusive Installation Bundle: Includes 3-Prong and 4-Prong Dryer Power Cords, Washer Hose Set, 8-ft Vent Duct, and 1-Year CPS Protection Plan
  • Smart Wi-Fi Enabled: Control washer and dryer remotely via SmartThings app
  • 4.7 cu ft capacity Washer with Active WaterJet & vibration reduction tech
  • Built-in WaterJet faucet lets you pretreat stains inside the tub
  • Self Clean keeps the tub fresh without harsh chemicals

5.02 GWh saved ÷ (12.28 GWh used + 5.02 GWh saved) = approximately 29%

That explains Samsung’s “approximately 30%” description. It is an aggregate fleet result, not a promise that every wash cycle or household will achieve the same percentage.

Who was included—and who was not

The sample is large enough to show that savings can occur at scale. However, it was not described as a random sample of every Samsung washer owner. The machines were selected high-efficiency models or market-equivalent grades, including ENERGY STAR models in the United States, Grade 1 models in Korea and Class A models in Europe.

The devices also had to be compatible with SmartThings and have AI Energy Mode activated at least once. Owners who connect appliances and use energy-management features may behave differently from owners who never connect their machines. Non-connected models and users who never activate the feature were outside the assessment.

The public announcement describes a third-party assurance exercise and a comparison of use with AI Energy Mode switched on and off. It does not, by itself, establish that households were randomly assigned to the two conditions or that load size, cycle choice, water temperature, detergent and user behavior were controlled identically. The public material also does not provide a complete set of model-by-model results, confidence intervals or raw data.

The careful conclusion is therefore: Carbon Trust Assurance verified a meaningful fleet-level reduction for a defined population of connected Samsung washers. That is not the same as a randomized trial proving a universal 30% saving.

How AI Energy Mode saves electricity

The main mechanism is not mysterious. Heating water is often one of the most energy-intensive parts of washing laundry. Samsung says AI Energy Mode can use lower wash temperatures and adjust cycle timing on compatible cycles. A longer cycle helps compensate for the lower temperature, while Samsung’s EcoBubble technology is designed to help detergent work effectively in cooler water.

In other words, much of the underlying strategy is familiar appliance efficiency: use less hot water and optimize the wash process. AI adds automation by monitoring usage, estimating costs and applying energy-saving behavior where the appliance and cycle support it.

Samsung’s newer product material claims up to 70% lower washer energy use on compatible cycles. That is a maximum, model- and cycle-dependent claim—not the average measured result from the global fleet. It should not be substituted for the approximately 30% assessed fleet result.

Samsung separately claims that AI Energy Mode can reduce dryer energy use by up to 20% through drying-process optimization. That is a different claim and should not be combined with the washing-machine figure.

AI Energy Mode is not the same as AI Wash

Samsung uses several “AI” labels for different functions. A washer can carry one without carrying all of the others.

Feature Main purpose What it proves
AI Energy Mode Reduce and monitor energy use on compatible cycles The relevant feature for Samsung’s energy-saving claim
AI Wash or AI OptiWash Detect soil, fabric and washing conditions and adjust the cycle Potentially useful optimization, but not automatically a 30% energy claim
AI Smart Dial Recommend cycles and simplify controls Convenience and interface personalization
AI Home or SmartThings Remote controls, monitoring and connected services May enable energy-management features, depending on model and region

Samsung describes AI OptiWash separately as a function that detects soil levels and fabrics and adjusts washing settings. Do not assume that a Samsung washer advertised as “AI” supports AI Energy Mode, or that every AI-labeled function reduces electricity use.

What you need to use the feature

SmartThings-based functions generally require a compatible appliance, the SmartThings app, Wi-Fi and a Samsung account. Samsung’s Laundry Hub FAQ and current product pages should be checked for the exact model.

Availability varies by model, country and software version. Samsung’s 2026 announcements specifically limit some newer connected features to compatible Bespoke models and, for certain functions, supported products released in 2024 or later with compatible Samsung Galaxy devices. That limitation should not be generalized to every SmartThings function.

A typical setup is:

  1. Confirm that the exact model supports AI Energy Mode.
  2. Install SmartThings and sign in with a Samsung account.
  3. Connect the washer to Wi-Fi.
  4. Add the appliance in SmartThings.
  5. Open the relevant energy-management controls.
  6. Enable AI Energy Mode if it is available for the washer and selected cycle.
  7. Review the app’s consumption or cost estimates over several weeks rather than judging the feature from one load.

Menu names and supported cycles can change, so the appliance manual and current app interface take priority over a generic setup guide.

The practical trade-off: lower energy can mean more time

Lower-temperature washing is not free of trade-offs. Samsung says AI Energy Mode may extend the cycle while reducing wash temperature. That can be acceptable for routine laundry, but it may frustrate households that need rapid turnaround or run several loads consecutively.

Hotter or specialized cycles can still be appropriate for heavily soiled, greasy or oily items, illness-related laundry, sanitization priorities and garments whose care labels specify particular treatment. AI Energy Mode should be treated as an option, not a reason to override the requirements of the load.

Users can also reduce the expected savings by changing the temperature, choosing an incompatible cycle or overriding the recommended settings. A household that already washes almost everything in cold water may see less additional benefit than one that routinely uses warm or hot cycles.

Does it save money?

Electricity savings do not translate directly into a guaranteed percentage reduction in the household utility bill. The financial result depends on the washer’s baseline consumption, number of loads, local electricity rates, cycle choices and the purchase-price premium for a connected model.

For example, if a washer uses 150 kWh per year and AI Energy Mode reduces that figure by 30%, the saving would be about 45 kWh. At an electricity price of $0.20 per kWh, that equals approximately $9 per year. This is an illustration, not a Samsung measurement or a promised saving.

That calculation also excludes the rest of the laundry system. Electric drying can use substantially more energy than washing, so households focused on total laundry consumption may gain more from efficient drying practices, full loads and an efficient dryer than from a washer feature alone.

Compare the washer’s basic efficiency first

AI Energy Mode should be considered an additional feature on an already efficient appliance. It should not replace comparison of annual energy use, water consumption, capacity, purchase price and serviceability.

For U.S. buyers, the ENERGY STAR certified-clothes-washer database provides model-specific information. ENERGY STAR says certified full-size washers use about 14 gallons of water per load, compared with approximately 20 gallons for a standard machine. Its listings include figures such as annual kWh, Integrated Modified Energy Factor and Integrated Water Factor.

For example, the Samsung WA53CG7555A* family is listed with annual washer energy use of 120 kWh, an IMEF of 2.3 and annual water use of 5,975 gallons. Those figures describe the model’s underlying efficiency; they are not proof that AI Energy Mode will produce an additional 30% saving in every household.

Use this order when comparing machines:

  1. Check certification and annual kWh.
  2. Compare water use and capacity.
  3. Consider how many loads the household actually runs.
  4. Confirm that AI Energy Mode supports the cycles you normally use.
  5. Estimate the electricity saving at your local rate.
  6. Compare the expected saving with the purchase-price premium.
  7. Consider repair availability, app dependence and software support.

An efficient non-AI washer used consistently on cold or warm cycles can outperform a premium AI washer whose owner ignores the energy mode, runs frequent hot loads or pays substantially more upfront.

Which Samsung product type makes sense?

Samsung’s premium connected products are not equally suitable for every household.

  • Standalone AI washer: Suitable for buyers who value automated cycle optimization, SmartThings controls and premium fabric-care features. It is a poor value if the main objective is simply the lowest purchase price.
  • All-in-one ventless washer-dryer combo: Useful in apartments and homes without an external dryer vent. It can take longer when washing and drying sequentially, and a single failure can disable both functions.
  • Stacked Laundry Hub: Useful where separate washer and dryer capacity is needed in a compact footprint. Installation requirements, power type, ventilation and service access must be checked carefully.
  • Simpler ENERGY STAR washer: Usually the clearest choice for buyers prioritizing measurable efficiency, lower upfront cost and independence from Wi-Fi or app support.

Current prices and promotions change. Samsung’s official pages should be used for the exact model, regional availability and installation requirements; do not treat a temporary discount as the normal cost basis for a payback calculation.

Common reasons savings may be lower than expected

  • The household already uses cold-water cycles almost exclusively.
  • The selected cycle does not support AI Energy Mode.
  • The user overrides the recommended temperature or timing.
  • Loads are small or unusually frequent.
  • The washer’s standard cycle is already highly efficient.
  • Drying consumes most of the household’s laundry energy.
  • Local electricity prices are low.
  • The “up to 70%” maximum was mistaken for a typical result.

Connectivity can also fail. The feature may be unavailable because the appliance is incompatible, Wi-Fi setup is incomplete, the Samsung account is not linked, a cycle is unsupported, the model has regional restrictions or a newer firmware version is required.

A connected washer may transmit usage information through SmartThings. Readers concerned about privacy should review Samsung’s current privacy documentation for their region and model rather than relying on broad assumptions about what the appliance collects.

Final verdict

Samsung has demonstrated more than a marketing slogan. A third-party assurance exercise attributed 5.02 GWh of savings to AI Energy Mode across a large fleet of connected, high-efficiency washing machines, with an aggregate result of approximately 30% during the reported assessment period.

But “Samsung proves AI washing machines save 30%” is too broad. The evidence applies to selected models, connected devices and participating usage patterns. It does not prove a universal household saving, a guaranteed financial payback or superiority over every efficient non-AI washer.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The sensible buying rule is simple: compare the washer’s measured annual kWh, water use, capacity, price and repair prospects first. Treat AI Energy Mode as a potentially useful automation layer that can make lower-energy washing easier—not as a substitute for choosing an efficient appliance.
