RTK, Network RTK, and PPK: Which GNSS Surveying Method Should You Use?

Single-base RTK and Network RTK deliver field solutions; PPK processes logged rover and reference observations after collection. Choose based on timing, coverage, communications, and project requirements.

Choose single-base RTK when you need positions in the field and can run a local base-to-rover link; choose Network RTK when you need real-time results without setting up your own base and have dependable service at the site; choose PPK when you can process observations after collection and have suitable reference data. The deciding factors are timing, coverage and communications, receiver capabilities, and the project’s control and accuracy requirements—not a universal accuracy ranking.

How the three methods differ

All three use GNSS observations together with reference information to improve positioning. The key differences are where that reference information comes from and when the position solution is computed.

Method Reference information When the position is computed Main practical dependency Best fit
Single-base RTK A local base receiver at a known or established position In the field, in real time A working base-to-rover correction link, suitable baseline, and sound setup Immediate field positions when you can operate a base and rover with reliable communications
Network RTK / RTN Multiple permanent reference stations; the system computes network corrections, often using a virtual reference station In the field, in real time Useful network coverage, service access, a supported data link, and a compatible rover Immediate results without establishing your own base, when the site is within useful coverage
PPK Simultaneously logged rover and reference observations; where supported, reference data may come from a downloaded source After collection, in processing software Raw observation logging, suitable reference data, and a validated processing workflow Field connectivity is unreliable or immediate coordinates are unnecessary, and there is time to process and quality-check

Single-base RTK

A base receiver supplies corrections to a rover as observations are collected, so the operator can see a solution in the field. This puts setup and communications on the project: the base must be established appropriately, and corrections must reach the rover over a reliable link.

Network RTK

A reference-station network supplies the reference information. A network server models errors and sends corrections to the rover; some systems provide a virtual reference station. This avoids setting up a project base, but not the need for a supported connection or service coverage.

PPK

The rover and reference observations are recorded and their baselines processed after the survey. The U.S. Geological Survey describes it this way: “PPK surveys are similar to RTK procedures, but the baselines are not processed in real-time.” The reference may be a stationary receiver on known control or suitable data from another reference source, depending on the workflow.

Choose by field workflow

Choose single-base RTK for immediate results with a project base

Use this approach when crews need positions as they work and can establish and maintain a local base-to-rover correction link. Confirm the base position, baseline suitability, radio or other communication setup, and the project’s control and datum requirements before relying on the field solution.

Choose Network RTK when the site has dependable network service

Network RTK suits work that needs real-time positions but does not call for a crew-operated project base. Verify the actual network operator’s coverage, account or access requirements, supported correction format, and communications path at the work area. A network’s existence does not mean every site is within effective range: Oregon DOT warns that users well outside its network will not be able to use network-based correction effectively.

Choose PPK when processing can happen after collection

PPK can suit sites where live correction delivery is unreliable or where crews do not need coordinates immediately. It still depends on usable logged rover observations and suitable reference observations. Confirm before mobilization that the receiver records the needed raw data, an appropriate reference source will be available, and the intended software can process the files. Plan for processing and quality checks after fieldwork.

What determines whether the result meets the job

There is no universal accuracy figure that establishes a winner among these workflows. Position quality depends on receiver and antenna quality, correction quality and location, satellite geometry, signal blockage, atmospheric conditions, baseline and setup, and the project’s control and reference requirements. A workflow distinction is not an accuracy guarantee.

The U.S. Geological Survey advises matching accuracy needs to receiver and correction quality. GPS.gov also identifies satellite geometry, signal blockage, atmospheric conditions, and receiver design as factors in actual GPS accuracy; its general GPS figures should not be treated as guarantees for corrected survey methods. Japan’s Geospatial Information Authority describes RTK-GNSS as centimeter-level and Network RTK as efficient real-time centimeter-level positioning. Those are agency descriptions of the methods, not promises for every receiver, location, datum, or survey.

For construction layout, as-built work, or other work with strict engineering or legal requirements, use the applicable jurisdictional survey specification and validate results against trusted control. Specify the datum realization and vertical reference, including the geoid model where relevant, rather than assuming that a real-time or post-processed coordinate automatically matches the project’s required reference.

Check the equipment and workflow before choosing

  • For any method: confirm receiver and antenna suitability, correction compatibility, supported constellations and frequencies, and fit with the project’s control and reference requirements.
  • For single-base RTK: confirm the base setup, suitable baseline, and a dependable correction link to the rover.
  • For Network RTK: confirm the rover supports the service’s correction format and communication path, and check coverage and access with the network operator.
  • For PPK: confirm raw observation logging, usable reference data, compatible processing software, and a procedure for checking the processed result.

A practical decision checklist

  1. Do crews need usable positions during fieldwork? If yes, compare single-base RTK and Network RTK. If no, PPK may fit.
  2. Can you establish a local base and maintain the correction link? If yes, single-base RTK is an option. If not, check whether a Network RTK service covers the site and can deliver corrections reliably.
  3. Can the project support post-field processing? If yes, and suitable rover and reference observations can be obtained, PPK is an option when live connectivity is a concern.
  4. Are tolerances or compliance requirements strict? Follow the applicable survey specification, define the required control and reference systems, and verify the workflow against trusted control.

These methods are not a performance ranking: control, datum realization, vertical reference, observation conditions, receiver and antenna, baseline length, and quality checks can determine whether a result meets its specification.
