Teleflora describes tulips as symbols of deep and perfect love, while ProFlowers associates red tulips with eternal love and passion. Those are attributed interpretations, not universal rules: the best choice is a flower and color the recipient enjoys, paired with a note that says what the gift means to you.
Why a tulip works as a rose alternative
Tulips are familiar enough to feel intentional, but they offer a different look from the conventional rose bouquet. If you want the gift to carry a romantic association, Teleflora’s guide describes tulips broadly as symbols of deep and perfect love; ProFlowers connects red tulips with eternal love and passion. Because symbolism varies by source and culture, treat those meanings as inspiration rather than a code your recipient is expected to know.
A short note makes the sentiment unmistakable: “I chose tulips because they remind me of how much I love being with you.” The personal explanation matters more than getting a supposed flower dictionary exactly right.
Other flowers to consider
Teleflora and the Royal Horticultural Society offer several possibilities beyond roses. These associations come from particular guides and traditions; they are not fixed meanings shared by everyone.

| Flower | Association in the cited guide | Could suit |
|---|---|---|
| Orchid | Teleflora lists passion; the Royal Horticultural Society lists longevity and elegance. | A striking gift for someone who likes unusual blooms. |
| Carnation | Teleflora lists love and fascination. English Heritage notes that striped carnations could mean refusal in Victorian symbolism. | A colorful alternative when you know the recipient likes carnations; avoid assuming every color or pattern carries the same message. |
| Lily | Teleflora associates lilies with purity and marriage. | A thoughtful option for a celebratory or deeply affectionate gift. |
| Daisy | Teleflora and the Royal Horticultural Society associate daisies with innocence; University of Illinois Extension also lists loyal love. | A cheerful, less formal arrangement. |
| Freesia | The Royal Horticultural Society lists friendship. | A warm choice when the message is appreciation or friendship rather than romance. |
| Peony | The Royal Horticultural Society lists bashfulness; University of Illinois Extension lists happy life and happy marriage. | A gift for someone who enjoys peonies, especially when the occasion suits their style. |
| Sunflower | The Royal Horticultural Society lists pure thoughts, adoration, and dedication. | A bright way to express admiration or devotion. |
| Sweet pea | The Royal Horticultural Society lists departure and delicate pleasures. | A graceful option when its appearance appeals, rather than relying on a romantic meaning. |

Flower meanings are not a universal language
Floriography—the practice of assigning meanings to flowers—became especially associated with the Victorian era, but the lists do not agree consistently. English Heritage says there is little evidence that bouquets were routinely designed to convey exact coded messages, and its historical examples can be less than flattering: a yellow rose could signify a decrease of love or infidelity, while lavender could signify distrust.

- 35 ASSORTED TULIP BULBS: Features a colorful blend of tulips to brighten up gardens and containers.
- GREAT FOR SMALL GARDENS: Enough bulbs to fill a raised bed, large planter, or front garden border.
- WINTER-HARDY IN ZONES 3 TO 8: Plant in fall for a stunning spring display. Deer-resistant and easy to maintain.
- IDEAL FOR POLLINATORS & CUT FLOWERS: Encourages bees in spring and lasts well in vases.
- LOW MAINTENANCE BEAUTY: Suitable for gardeners of all levels. Just plant, water, and enjoy.
University of Illinois Extension, by contrast, lists yellow roses as representing joy and gladness. That disagreement is a useful reminder that a flower’s supposed message depends on the source, time, and context. Christopher Weddell, Senior Gardens Advisor at English Heritage, puts the modern problem this way: “People – especially the Victorians – have attributed different symbolic meanings to flowers for thousands of years, but today the deeper and more complex language of flowers is all but lost.”
When the message matters, do not make the recipient decode the bouquet. Choose something they like, then explain your own intention in a card or conversation.

Choose for the person and the occasion
- Start with their preferences. A favorite flower or color is more personal than a symbolic choice they may not recognize.
- Match the message. Decide whether you mean romantic affection, gratitude, friendship, or admiration, then say that plainly in the note.
- Check what is in season and available locally. A florist can suggest a comparable bloom if your first choice is unavailable.
- Pick the format. A cut arrangement is ready to display; a potted plant may suit someone who prefers to keep growing plants, but it comes with ongoing care.
- Consider care demands. Teleflora notes that orchids need specialized care. If the recipient is unlikely to want that responsibility, choose a lower-maintenance arrangement.
Help a cut bouquet last longer
For a cut arrangement, University of Illinois Extension recommends changing the vase water every two days, removing wilted flowers or leaves, and keeping the bouquet in a cool, bright spot away from direct sun and heat. These simple steps apply whichever non-rose flower you choose.
