On January 23, 2026, Shenzhen PICEA Robotics Co., Ltd. and Santrum Hong Kong Co., Limited completed the court-supervised acquisition, taking 100% ownership of iRobot and turning it into a private company.
For Roomba owners, that means continued products, apps, and support have been announced—not an immediate shutdown. For shareholders, the outcome was far harsher: existing common-stock holders were expected to receive no equity in the reorganized company.

From robotics laboratory to household name
iRobot was founded in 1990 by MIT roboticists with ambitions broader than floor cleaning. The company worked on military, industrial, educational, and consumer robots before its most recognizable product changed its trajectory.

That product was Roomba, introduced in 2002. Its basic proposition was remarkably accessible: a small autonomous robot could repeatedly perform one of the least popular household chores without being directed around every obstacle.
#1 Best Overall
- POWERFUL CLEANING YOU CAN SEE—AND FEEL. The Roomba 105X devours dirt with 70X more power‑lifting suction* to pull embedded dust, crumbs, and pet hair from carpets and hard floors. .*Compared to Roomba 600 series robots.
- 3‑STAGE CLEANING SYSTEM. Combines intense suction, a Multi‑Surface brush, and an Edge‑Sweeping brush to leave floors truly barefoot‑clean—not just surface tidy.
- SMART LIDAR MAPPING = NO MISSED ROOMS. ClearView LiDAR maps your home quickly and cleans in neat, efficient rows, delivering consistent coverage instead of random paths.
- CONFIDENT CLEANING, DAY OR NIGHT. Avoids furniture, cords, and everyday obstacles—even in low light—so cleaning continues smoothly without getting stuck.
- CUSTOM ROOM‑BY‑ROOM CLEANING. Schedule cleans, target high‑traffic areas, adjust suction, and add extra passes where messes build up.
Roomba was also unusually memorable for an appliance. Its circular shape, wandering movements, occasional mistakes, and habit of getting trapped beneath furniture encouraged owners to give their robots names and personalities. It became less like a conventional vacuum and more like a small household character.
According to iRobot’s 2024 annual report, the company had sold more than 50 million consumer robots worldwide. Roomba helped establish robotic floor care as a mainstream consumer category, rather than a laboratory demonstration or novelty gadget.

The rise was bigger than Roomba alone
iRobot expanded beyond its core vacuum line. Its portfolio included Braava floor-mopping robots, Dirt Dog industrial and shop-cleaning products, Verro pool-cleaning robots, and Looj gutter-cleaning robots. It also pursued Terra, a robotic lawn mower that never became a major commercial product.
Later Roomba generations added room mapping, app control, automatic dirt disposal, combined vacuum-and-mop functions, and docks that could perform more maintenance. These features made robot cleaning more useful, but they also changed the competitive standard. A robot no longer competed only on whether it could move across a floor autonomously. It competed on navigation, obstacle avoidance, mopping, dock automation, software, price, and the cost of long-term ownership.
The market caught up
Roomba’s early category leadership did not guarantee permanent technological or pricing leadership. iRobot’s 2024 annual report acknowledged increased competition in robotic floor care and conceded market share.
Roborock, Dreame, Ecovacs, Shark, Eufy, and other brands increasingly offered combinations of lidar or camera-based mapping, obstacle recognition, self-emptying docks, vacuum-and-mop systems, and aggressive pricing. The important point is not that one rival single-handedly killed Roomba. Rather, the features that once helped iRobot command a premium became more widely available.
That put pressure on a company with a well-known brand but a difficult cost structure. Retailers and distributors reduced orders, consumer spending weakened, and competition intensified. In 2024, iRobot reported a 23% revenue decline and a $103 million operating loss. It also said it reduced approximately 563 employees—about 51% of its global workforce—as part of restructuring efforts.
Those layoffs were an effort to reduce expenses, improve margins, and conserve cash. They were not, by themselves, evidence that Roomba products had stopped working or that the company had already ceased operations.

The Amazon deal that failed
Amazon and iRobot announced a proposed acquisition on August 4, 2022. The agreement was later reduced in value and faced regulatory scrutiny before the companies mutually terminated it on January 29, 2024.
The termination did not automatically make iRobot bankrupt. It did, however, remove a possible source of capital, distribution scale, and strategic support at a time when iRobot was already under pressure. The regulatory process also consumed time and created uncertainty while the standalone business was trying to compete in a rapidly changing market.

iRobot’s disclosures treated the failed transaction as a major setback and connected the period afterward with leadership changes and restructuring. The more accurate explanation is cumulative: competition, falling orders, losses, and the loss of a potential buyer combined to weaken the company’s options.

What the Chapter 11 filing meant
Chapter 11 is a court-supervised restructuring process, not automatically a liquidation. iRobot filed voluntary, prepackaged Chapter 11 petitions in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the District of Delaware on December 14, 2025.
“Prepackaged” means the company had negotiated and obtained substantial support for the restructuring before or alongside the filing. The plan was designed to preserve the operating business while restructuring its debt and transferring ownership.
iRobot requested authority to continue normal operations, pay employees and vendors, and honor customer obligations. Its filing said the plan anticipated paying most unsecured creditors other than Picea in full and in the ordinary course.
The legal distinction matters:
- Accurate for December 14, 2025: iRobot filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection.
- Not the best description after January 23, 2026: iRobot is still in bankruptcy.
- Imprecise: Roomba went bankrupt. Roomba is a product brand; iRobot Corporation was the legal company that filed.

Why Picea became the owner
The buyer was not an unrelated company discovering Roomba from the outside. Shenzhen PICEA Robotics Co., Ltd.—formerly known as Shenzhen 3irobotix Co., Ltd.—and its wholly owned subsidiary Santrum Hong Kong Co., Limited already had important relationships with iRobot.

- AVOIDS CORDS, SOCKS—EVEN PET ACCIDENTS. PrecisionVision AI instantly recognizes common household obstacles and steers around them. It also detects wet and dry messes ahead and automatically makes extra passes for a noticeably cleaner result.
- SMARTER NAVIGATION, FEWER WORRIES. ClearView Pro LiDAR maps your home precisely and cleans efficiently day or night, while built‑in cliff sensors help prevent falls near stairs and ledges.
Picea was iRobot’s primary contract manufacturer and secured lender. The restructuring therefore converted an existing financing and supply-chain relationship into ownership. Under the transaction, Picea acquired 100% of iRobot’s equity. The filing also described a new two-year design, manufacturing, assembly, packaging, and supply agreement between the companies.
This arrangement may give the reorganized business closer control over manufacturing and financing. It does not automatically solve the harder problems: product differentiation, software quality, retailer confidence, brand pricing power, and market share.
Roomba survived, but shareholders did not
After the Chapter 11 filing, Nasdaq began the process of delisting iRobot. Trading in the public shares was scheduled to be suspended on December 22, 2025.
Under the proposed restructuring terms, existing common-stock holders were expected to receive no equity in the reorganized company and to suffer a total loss. When the transaction closed, iRobot emerged as a private company under Picea ownership.
This is the central distinction in the story. The consumer brand and operating business were preserved, while the previous public-company ownership structure was wiped out.

What the restructuring means for Roomba owners
At the time of the filing, iRobot said it expected no disruption to app functionality, customer programs, partners, supply-chain relationships, or product support. After the transaction closed, the company said it continued operating, supporting existing products, and developing new Roomba products.
Those are company commitments, not guarantees of indefinite service. A restructuring can preserve a product line while future owners change support policies, cloud infrastructure, privacy practices, software priorities, or parts availability.
Existing owners should:
- Keep purchase receipts, warranty records, and service correspondence.
- Check the current warranty and support terms on iRobot’s official website.
- Continue normal maintenance and avoid deleting the app solely because of the bankruptcy filing.
- Understand that cloud-dependent features could be affected by future service changes even if basic cleaning continues locally.
- Buy replacement filters, bags, brushes, or batteries based on realistic use and availability—not panic-buying.
- Review the current privacy policy before connecting a robot or sharing additional household information.
A mapping robot may collect information such as floor plans, room names, device identifiers, usage data, and other connected-home information. New ownership alone does not prove where data is stored or whether it is transferred to any particular country. Those questions require the current privacy and technical disclosures.

Is Roomba still being made in 2026?
Yes. As of August 18, 2026, iRobot was operating under Picea ownership and announcing new products. The company identified a Roomba Mini robot vacuum and mop for the United Kingdom and Europe in March 2026. In July, it announced a broader product expansion that included a new five-in-one hard-floor cleaner and a new generation of Roomba robots.
Current announcements are evidence of continuing operations, not proof that iRobot has regained its former market position. Official product updates are available through iRobot’s press-release archive.
Should you buy a Roomba after the bankruptcy?
The bankruptcy filing should be one factor, not the entire buying decision. A current Roomba may still make sense for someone who values the iRobot app, already owns compatible accessories, or prefers continuity with an existing household setup. A competitor may be more attractive to someone prioritizing advanced mopping, obstacle recognition, automated dock functions, or lower pricing.
Compare the complete ownership system rather than the robot’s headline price:
- Carpet and hard-floor cleaning performance.
- Pet-hair pickup and large-debris handling.
- Mopping capability and dock maintenance.
- Mapping and obstacle avoidance.
- App and cloud dependence.
- Availability and cost of filters, bags, brushes, batteries, cleaning fluid, and replacement docks.
- Warranty length, repair options, and local service in your country.
- Privacy controls and current data-storage disclosures.
Roborock, Dreame, Shark, and Eufy are among the alternatives worth comparing, but model quality varies substantially within every brand. A company’s historic reputation—or its bankruptcy—cannot establish that every current model is best or worst.
The next test is execution, not nostalgia
Picea’s ownership may reduce financial strain and align manufacturing more closely with the company’s operations. It does not automatically restore the advantages that made Roomba dominant.
The reorganized iRobot must still answer several practical questions: Can it produce genuinely differentiated robots? Can it make its software and mapping experience competitive? Can it persuade retailers and consumers to pay for the brand? Can it maintain parts, warranties, privacy protections, and cloud services over the life of connected products?
Debt relief can buy time. Manufacturing integration can improve efficiency. Neither guarantees innovation or consumer trust.

Roomba’s story is not a simple disappearance. iRobot helped turn autonomous floor cleaning into a mass-market product, built one of the most recognizable names in consumer robotics, and then lost ground as competitors matched or exceeded its features at aggressive prices.
The failed Amazon acquisition, falling retailer orders, a 23% revenue decline in 2024, a $103 million operating loss, and major workforce reductions all narrowed iRobot’s options. Chapter 11 preserved the operating business but ended the company’s former public ownership structure.
Roomba survived. Independent, publicly traded iRobot did not. The brand’s next chapter under Picea will be judged by products, support, software, and value—not by the nostalgia attached to the robot that started it all.
