Verdict: The Roomba Plus 505 Combo is a genuinely capable vacuum-and-mop system for everyday crumbs, dust, pet hair, footprints, and routine floor maintenance. Its rotating mop pads, LiDAR mapping, obstacle recognition, edge-focused cleaning, and AutoWash dock make it far more convenient than a basic robot cleaner. It is a particularly strong choice for homes with mostly sealed hard floors, pets, and enough room for its dock.
The catch is price. At or near its $999.99 list price, compare it carefully with premium rivals. At a substantial discount—historical offers have reached roughly $500–$600—it becomes a much more compelling buy. It also cannot replace a full-size vacuum for stairs, upholstery, thick carpet, car interiors, or serious deep cleaning.

What you get
The package includes the Roomba Plus 505 Combo robot, AutoWash dock, power cord, one extra auto-empty bag, and one extra set of dual spinning mop pads. The robot is 4.2 inches tall, but that is only part of the space requirement: the dock needs substantially more floor and vertical clearance than the robot itself. Measure the intended parking location before ordering, particularly in a compact kitchen, hallway, or utility room.
#1 Best Overall
- A DEEPER CLEAN—EVEN WHERE DIRT LOVES TO HIDE. With advanced DualClean Mop Pads and PerfectEdge technology the Roomba Plus 505X reaches deeper into corners and along walls, covering 18% more floor area* so spills, crumbs, and sticky spots don’t get left behind. * Compared to standard vacuum & mop mode on coffee and grime.
- THE DOCK THAT HANDLES THE DIRTY WORK. The AutoWash Dock empties debris for up to 75 days and washes, refreshes, and heat‑dries mop pads—so you enjoy up to 4 weeks of hands‑free mopping* with consistently fresh results.
- POWERFUL ENOUGH FOR REAL‑LIFE MESSES. From scattered cereal to muddy pawprints, enjoy confident cleaning with up to 70× stronger suction* paired with dual mop pads, a multi‑surface rubber brush, and edge‑sweeping brush. * As compared to Roomba 600 series robots.
- AVOIDS CORDS, SOCKS—EVEN PET ACCIDENTS. PrecisionVision AI instantly recognizes common household obstacles and steers around them. It also detects wet and dry messes ahead and automatically makes extra passes for a noticeably cleaner result.
- SMARTER NAVIGATION, FEWER WORRIES. ClearView Pro LiDAR maps your home precisely and cleans efficiently day or night, while built‑in cliff sensors help prevent falls near stairs and ledges.
The robot uses a lithium-ion battery. Its dock is not just a charger; it is the feature that defines this model’s convenience. It empties collected debris, washes and dries the mop pads, refreshes them during cleaning, and runs dock self-cleaning cycles.
Vacuuming performance
iRobot equips the 505 with a multi-surface rubber brush, edge-sweeping brush, Carpet Boost, Dirt Detect, and four selectable suction levels in the app. Its frequently repeated “70x more intense suction” claim needs context: iRobot compares it with its own Roomba 600-series robots. It is not a standardized suction measurement and should not be read as 70 times the performance of every competing vacuum.
Independent testing from Tom’s Guide found strong everyday cleaning. Its reported overall scores were 94.75 on hardwood and 88.9 on carpet. On hardwood, the published results were 97.3 for Cheerios, 94.45 for kitty litter, and 92.5 for pet hair. On carpet, it scored 99.35 for Cheerios, 94.75 for kitty litter, and 72.5 for pet hair.
Those numbers point to a useful distinction: the 505 is strong at routine debris and everyday maintenance, but carpet pet-hair pickup was materially weaker than its hardwood result. It is a good way to reduce the amount of manual vacuuming, not a replacement for a powerful stick or upright vacuum when carpet needs a deep clean.

How good is the mopping?
The 505 uses dual spinning mop pads operating at 200 RPM. In standard cleaning, it can vacuum and mop simultaneously or vacuum first and mop afterward. When it detects carpet, the pads lift to reduce the risk of wetting rugs.
Its SmartScrub mode moves the robot back and forth while applying downward pressure. iRobot says this delivers twice the scrubbing depth of standard vacuum-and-mop mode for coffee and grime. PerfectEdge extends mopping coverage 18% closer to edges than the non-extended DualClean pad. These are manufacturer comparisons, not universal industry measurements, but the rotating pads and deliberate scrubbing motion are meaningful advantages over a robot that simply drags a damp cloth.
The best use case is sealed hard flooring with repeated light contamination: food residue, footprints, dust, and pet paw marks. This remains maintenance mopping, not spill response. Do not expect it to remove large spills, standing water, thick grease, neglected grout, or dried-on messes as reliably as manual cleaning. Check maps, rugs, thresholds, and no-mop boundaries before leaving it unattended.

What the AutoWash dock automates—and what it does not
The dock automatically empties the robot’s debris, washes the mop pads, dries them with heat, and manages pad refreshes during mopping. iRobot rates its capacity at up to 75 days of auto-emptying and up to four weeks of mopping and pad washing, with the latter based on one mopping run per week.
Those are “up to” figures, not a guaranteed maintenance schedule. Shedding pets, a larger home, frequent cleaning, muddy debris, water hardness, and wet messes can shorten the interval. The dock reduces chores; it does not eliminate them.

- 75 DAYS HANDS‑FREE .The Roomba 105X Combo + AutoEmpty Dock captures dirt and dust in a sealed bag that locks in 99% of allergens (0.7 microns), so you can cleanup without touching the mess or releasing dust into the air.
- VACUUMS & MOPS TOGETHER TO SAVE TIME. Combines powerful vacuuming with a built‑in microfiber mop to clean hard floors in one run—less manual work for busy homes.
- POWERFUL CLEANING YOU CAN SEE—AND FEEL. Devours dirt with 70X more power‑lifting suction* to pull embedded dust, crumbs, and pet hair from carpets and hard floors. The 3‑Stage Cleaning System combines intense suction, a Multi‑Surface brush, and an Edge‑Sweeping brush to leave floors truly barefoot‑clean—not just surface tidy.*Compared to Roomba 600 series robots.
- 2× DEEPER SCRUBBING FOR STICKY FLOORS. SmartScrub uses a micro‑pump to keep the mop pad evenly moist for deeper cleaning of footprints, spills, and dried‑on messes.**
- SMART LIDAR MAPPING = NO MISSED ROOMS. ClearView LiDAR maps your home quickly and cleans in neat, efficient rows, delivering consistent coverage instead of random paths.
Expect to empty the dirty-water tank and refill the clean-water tank, wipe the robot bin, clean charging contacts and brushes, and inspect filters and sensors. iRobot recommends cleaning the pad-washing basin and overflow basin about monthly, when visibly dirty, or when the app requests it. Neglected water tanks and basins can develop odors, collect hair, or interfere with cleaning.
Cleaning solution warning
Do not put dish soap, bleach, disinfectant, essential oils, vinegar, or generic floor cleaner in the tank unless iRobot specifically approves it for this model and region. iRobot lists plain water, StayClean Mopping Concentrate, and Braava Jet Fresh Liquid Floor Cleaner among the approved options for the Plus 505 Series. Unauthorized solutions can create foam, cause corrosion or malfunction, and may affect warranty coverage. See iRobot’s approved cleaning-solution guidance.
Navigation, obstacle avoidance, and the app
ClearView Pro LiDAR maps the home, while PrecisionVision AI is designed to recognize objects such as cords, socks, shoes, and pet waste. The robot can store up to five maps, auto-name rooms, clean selected rooms or zones, repeat passes, and make room-priority recommendations. iRobot says mapping a 1,000-square-foot space takes about nine minutes.
Tom’s Guide found that the robot handled thresholds, doors, and obstacles well, but reported occasional app glitches and inconsistent spot-cleaning behavior. Navigation is not the same as perfect coverage: furniture, closed doors, clutter, dark rugs, reflective surfaces, and narrow gaps can still prevent access.
Pet-waste recognition should be treated as a helpful safeguard, not a guarantee. Pick up cords and socks before cleaning, and never rely on an AI feature to make leaving pet accidents on the floor safe.

The 505 still has recurring chores and consumables:
- Replace disposable auto-empty bags.
- Refill clean water and dispose of dirty water.
- Clean the brush, filter, sensors, charging contacts, and robot bin.
- Clean the dock basin, overflow basin, roller, and filter.
- Replace mop pads after 180 cleaning hours, according to iRobot’s Plus 500 support guidance.
The product is lower-maintenance than a manual vacuum-and-mop routine, but it is not maintenance-free. Buyers who dislike bags, water tanks, app-controlled appliances, or approved cleaning-fluid requirements may prefer a conventional vacuum and mop.

The 505 is difficult to judge without its current price. The cited list-price signal is $999.99, while retailer and promotional signals have varied from roughly $499.99 to $599. Because prices, inventory, return policies, and warranties change, verify the actual checkout total on the day you buy.
- At a major discount: a strong recommendation for homes that value automated mopping and dock convenience.
- At midrange sale pricing: a good buy if you have mostly hard floors, pets, or daily debris.
- At $999.99: compare premium alternatives before committing.
- Above list price: generally hard to justify unless you specifically prefer iRobot’s ecosystem or support.
How it compares with alternatives
Roomba Plus 405 Combo
The Plus 405 is the relevant iRobot comparison for shoppers who want an AutoWash-style system at a lower tier. Verify the exact differences in suction, navigation, obstacle recognition, mop hardware, and app features before treating it as an equivalent substitute.
Best Value
- POWERFUL SUCTION ON CARPET & HARD FLOORS: High suction power pulls up dirt, debris, pet hair, and fine dust from carpets and hard floors, delivering deep, consistent, whole-home cleaning performance.
- SONIC MOPPING FOR STUCK-ON STAINS: Sonic mopping scrubs floors up to 100x per minute to lift tough stains, grime, and dried spills, while intelligently avoiding carpets; use the SharkClean app to set carpet zones for vacuum-only cleaning.
- SELF-EMPTYING & SELF-CLEANING BASE: The NeverTouch base self-empties debris into a 60- day capacity bagless bin, refills water for up to 30 days, and automatically washes and dries the mop after every clean for convenient, hands-free cleaning.
- PERFECT FOR HOMES WITH PETS: Advanced suction and sonic mopping removes pet hair, dirt, and dander, while HEPA filtration with Anti-Allergen Complete Seal helps trap dust and allergens for a fresher home.
- EDGE & CORNER CLEANING WITH EDGE DETECT: Blasts of air pull debris from edges and corners into the cleaning path, ensuring more thorough pickup along walls and tight spaces.
Roomba Max 705 Combo
The Max 705 sits higher in iRobot’s range, with a more advanced roller-mop approach, additional edge features, and a more elaborate dock according to the cited comparison coverage. Its higher price makes sense only if those upgrades solve a problem you actually have.
Roborock Saros 10R
The Saros 10R is a serious premium alternative, with a 3.14-inch body, dual spinning mops, automatic mop detachment, anti-tangle features, obstacle avoidance, and a multifunction dock. The official U.S. store showed a $899.99 sale signal against a $1,599.99 reference price during research, but current pricing must be checked. It uses Roborock’s app ecosystem and supports 2.4-GHz Wi-Fi according to the cited listing, so it is less suitable for buyers committed to iRobot.
Traditional vacuum and mop
A stick or upright vacuum plus a conventional mop remains better for stairs, upholstery, cars, thick carpet, large spills, and deep-cleaning sessions. It also avoids disposable robot bags, water tanks, app dependence, and proprietary consumables.
Who should buy the Roomba Plus 505?
- You have mostly sealed hard floors with some carpet or rugs.
- Pet hair, crumbs, dust, and paw prints are persistent problems.
- You want meaningful scrubbing rather than a passive damp wipe.
- You value automatic emptying, pad washing, and heated drying.
- You have enough space for the dock.
- You accept periodic cleaning and replacement consumables.
- You can buy it well below the $999.99 list-price reference.
Who should skip it?
- You need a robot to replace a full-size vacuum.
- Your home has substantial thick or high-pile carpet.
- You need precise, dependable spot cleaning.
- Dustbin-emptying noise is a major concern.
- You require flawless app behavior.
- You have little room for the dock or many low-clearance areas.
- You do not want approved cleaning fluids or periodic dock maintenance.
- You need to clean multiple floors without carrying the robot and dock.
Bottom line
The Roomba Plus 505 Combo is a solid, smart cleaning system—not a deep-clean replacement. Its strongest advantages are the combination of effective everyday vacuuming, genuinely useful rotating-pad mopping, edge coverage, intelligent mapping, and a dock that handles much of the unpleasant work. Buy it when the price is meaningfully below list and your priority is automated daily maintenance. At full price, compare it closely with Roborock and higher-end Roomba models before deciding.
