RoofPoint Guidelines in Action: D. C. Taylor’s Meridian Vineyards Roofing Case

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

D. C. Taylor Co.’s work at Meridian Vineyards in Paso Robles, California, is a historical example of a commercial roof project evaluated with the newly developed RoofPoint guidelines. The account shows how a winery used a sustainability framework to document roofing decisions, manage waste, and reduce disruption to production. It does not establish a current RoofPoint certification, a complete roof assembly, or quantified energy, water, cost, or service-life results.

What the Meridian Vineyards case actually shows

The project was performed at Meridian Vineyards in Paso Robles, a California wine-producing facility where roofing work had to be coordinated with an operating business. A Building Enclosure project report says D. C. Taylor Co. submitted the project after reviewing it with the then-new RoofPoint guidelines. The report presents RoofPoint as a way to make sustainability-related roofing decisions measurable and documentable rather than as a product label.

Todd Kaska, identified in that report as D. C. Taylor’s vice president for preferred accounts, described the purpose this way: “The RoofPoint evaluation criteria provided Meridian with a method to document and measure decisions for developing projects as it relates to maintaining or replacing their roofs.” He also said, “Meridian, like many other wineries, is highly sophisticated in its approach to sustainability.”

Those statements explain the project’s practical concern. A roof replacement or major restoration at a winery can affect production schedules, access routes, worker safety, storage, sanitation and weather protection. The report says the criteria helped the team document recycling and waste diversion as well. It does not identify the membrane, insulation, deck, coating, drainage layout, roof area, energy model, water result, project price or warranty. Those details should not be inferred from the RoofPoint categories.

RoofPoint in the 2012 guideline

The official preview is titled RoofPoint Guideline for Environmentally Innovative Nonresidential Roofing, document RP.2012.NR, published January 1, 2012. It describes a voluntary, consensus-based program developed by the Center for Environmental Innovation in Roofing (CEIR), with input from contractors, consultants, manufacturers and research organizations. The intended subject was the life-cycle performance of new and replacement roofs on commercial and institutional buildings.

RoofPoint was not presented as a substitute for building regulations. The guideline says roofing systems must comply with applicable codes. It also emphasizes following manufacturer recommendations so that materials and installation methods work together and warranty conditions remain valid.

The five RoofPoint assessment areas

The framework grouped roofing decisions into five functional areas. These are assessment axes, not proof that every listed measure was used at Meridian Vineyards.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Functional area Representative subjects in RP.2012.NR What an owner would document
Energy management Insulation and thermal practices, roof-surface thermal contribution, air barriers, rooftop energy systems and daylighting. Design choices affecting heat flow, air leakage, roof temperature and opportunities to integrate energy or daylight systems.
Materials management Recycled content, materials reuse, roofing-waste management and low-VOC materials. Material records, reuse decisions, product characteristics, recycling documentation and disposal or diversion records.
Water management Stormwater retention and reduction of roof-related water use. Measures that retain, slow or manage runoff and choices that limit water consumed by roof-related operations.
Durability and life-cycle management Durable insulation, drainage, roof-traffic protection, wind-uplift resistance, moisture management, durability enhancements, maintenance and installation quality. Evidence that the roof can resist its environment, remain serviceable, be maintained safely and avoid premature replacement.
Environmental innovation Innovation in design and exemplary performance. A documented approach that goes beyond ordinary compliance or demonstrates an unusually effective result.

This structure matters because it broadens the definition of a sustainable roof. A roof can have a favorable thermal characteristic but still perform poorly if drainage, traffic protection, moisture control or maintenance access are neglected. Conversely, a project may earn recognition for disciplined material recovery and documentation even when no public source reports a complete energy or water analysis.

How the dated scoring system worked

The RP.2012.NR preview assigns points according to the level at which an assessment item is satisfied:

  • Meets Intent: 1 point.
  • Meets Requirement: 1 point.
  • Exceeds Requirement: 1.5 points.

Eligibility in that 2012 document required at least 12 total points, plus category minimums: at least 3 points in Energy, at least 2 points in Materials and Water, and at least 4 points in Durability/Life Cycle. These thresholds belong to the 2012 guideline. They should not be treated as current RoofPoint rules without confirming the applicable edition.

The guideline’s scoring language also illustrates why a total score alone is incomplete. A project could not qualify merely by accumulating points in one favored area; it had to show minimum performance across energy, materials or water, and durability/life-cycle management. Code compliance remained mandatory regardless of the score.

What was reported about D. C. Taylor’s score and award

A 2014 article in Roofing Magazine reports that the Meridian Vineyards restoration achieved a RoofPoint score of 17. The same trade report associates the project with a 2011 RoofPoint Excellence in Design Award for Excellence in Materials Management. Those are historical claims attributed to that article, not evidence of a current certification, current award or active listing.

The reported score is higher than the 12-point eligibility threshold printed in the RP.2012.NR preview. However, the public project account does not publish the individual credit calculations. It is therefore not possible to determine how many points came from energy, materials, water, durability/life cycle or environmental innovation, or which specific actions produced the reported 17.

Why RoofPoint was useful at an operating winery

Keeping sustainability decisions auditable

Roofing projects often involve dozens of choices made by an owner, designer, contractor, manufacturer and waste hauler. A category-based framework gives the team a common record: what was specified, what was installed, what was diverted and what maintenance or life-cycle issue was addressed. That record can support internal sustainability reporting without claiming that every environmental benefit has been measured in dollars or kilowatt-hours.

Reducing interference with wine production

Meridian’s stated concern was avoiding roofing work that interfered with wine production. In practice, an owner would need to coordinate staging, deliveries, noisy or dusty operations, weather exposure, employee and visitor routes, and any work near sensitive production areas. The available account does not provide a shutdown schedule or a list of controls, so those project-management details cannot be reconstructed. RoofPoint’s value in this case was the discipline of documenting decisions around the existing facility, not a published claim that production was unaffected.

Making waste diversion visible

Kaska said the criteria helped D. C. Taylor better document recycling and waste diversion. Documentation can include material quantities, hauler tickets, destination facilities, reuse records and the treatment of removed roofing. The report does not state the amount diverted, the percentage recycled, the materials involved or the disposal facilities. The defensible conclusion is that waste documentation was an identified benefit, not that a particular diversion rate was achieved.

What the public record does not establish

  • The exact date of the original project report or the full construction timeline.
  • The roof area, deck type, membrane or coating system, insulation thickness or thermal resistance.
  • Measured energy savings, stormwater volume, water savings, carbon reduction or operating-cost savings.
  • The project’s contract value, maintenance cost, warranty term or actual service life.
  • A complete credit-by-credit RoofPoint scorecard.
  • Whether a current RoofPoint edition recognizes the project or whether the 2012 criteria remain in force.
  • Whether a California office listed today performed the historical work.

A technically responsible case study keeps these boundaries visible. RoofPoint categories explain what could have been assessed; they do not supply missing project specifications or outcomes.

How to use the five areas when planning a similar California project

1. Establish the owner’s operating constraints

Before design, identify production windows, sanitation requirements, occupied spaces, access restrictions, odor or dust sensitivities, emergency egress, fire protection and weather contingencies. For a winery, map harvest and bottling periods alongside the roofing sequence. Record which areas can be isolated and which must remain continuously protected.

2. Build a baseline condition record

Document leaks, wet insulation, ponding, drainage restrictions, roof traffic, penetrations, edge conditions and prior repairs. Include photographs, drawings and moisture-investigation results where appropriate. This baseline supports a maintain-versus-replace decision and provides evidence for durability and life-cycle claims.

3. Set measurable goals in each RoofPoint area

  • Energy: define the applicable code requirements and the project’s insulation, air-barrier, surface and daylighting objectives.
  • Materials: specify recycled-content or reuse goals where suitable, identify low-VOC requirements and create a waste-tracking method before demolition.
  • Water: coordinate roof drainage and stormwater measures with site regulations and facility operations.
  • Durability/life cycle: address wind uplift, moisture, traffic, drainage, maintenance access, installation quality and expected inspection routines.
  • Innovation: define what would count as an exceptional approach and how it will be verified.

4. Coordinate products and installation

Confirm that the specified components are compatible and that installation follows applicable codes and manufacturer instructions. Keep submittals, tested assemblies, fastener patterns, adhesive requirements, safety documents and warranty conditions together. A sustainability objective cannot override a code requirement or an installation detail needed for system performance.

5. Track construction evidence as work proceeds

Do not wait until closeout to assemble the record. Capture delivery tickets, product data, photographs of concealed work, inspection reports, waste manifests, recycling receipts, weather interruptions, corrective actions and owner approvals during each phase. This is especially important when the facility remains operational.

6. Close out with a maintenance plan

Provide roof plans, drainage maps, penetration locations, approved repair materials, inspection intervals and safe access procedures. Durability is a life-cycle activity, not a one-time installation claim. The plan should identify who records observations and how leaks, blocked drains, membrane damage or unsafe traffic conditions are escalated.

Current California context for facility owners

D. C. Taylor Co.’s current California service page lists a Concord office, California contractor license CA LIC #451656, and commercial and industrial capabilities including single-ply, low-slope, coatings, modified bitumen, metal and built-up roofing. It also lists maintenance, asset management, emergency services, skylight and smoke-hatch work, inspections, repairs, reroofing, fall protection and sustainable roofing services.

That page is useful current company context, but it does not prove that the Concord office performed the Meridian Vineyards work, that any listed system was used there, or that the historical project has a current RoofPoint status. A facility owner seeking comparable work should request project-specific qualifications, licensing confirmation, safety planning, references, proposed assemblies, manufacturer approvals, waste documentation procedures and a clearly defined maintenance scope.

Questions to ask before adopting a RoofPoint-style process

  • Which RoofPoint edition or other sustainability standard governs the project?
  • Who will calculate points and retain supporting evidence?
  • What code, fire, wind, energy and stormwater requirements apply at the site?
  • How will production, occupancy, access and weather risks be controlled?
  • What materials will be reused, recycled or sent to disposal, and how will quantities be verified?
  • Which durability measures are included in the design, and what maintenance budget supports them?
  • What outcomes will be measured after installation, and which outcomes are only design intentions?
  • What documentation will the owner receive at closeout?

Bottom line on the Meridian example

The Meridian Vineyards project is best understood as a dated case study in using RoofPoint as a documentation and decision framework for an operating commercial facility. The reported 17-point score and materials-management award show how the project was presented in trade coverage, while the 2012 guideline explains the five areas and historical eligibility thresholds behind that assessment. The evidence does not support a reconstructed roof specification or quantified performance claim, and it should not be presented as proof of current RoofPoint certification.

Frequently Asked Questions
