The Roku Smart Light Strip SE is a budget-friendly way to add color and adjustable white accent lighting indoors, especially if you already use Roku’s smart-home app or voice controls. Roku listed the 16.4-foot model at $24.99 and the 32.8-foot model at $44.99 on August 16, 2026, but both sizes were marked out of stock on Roku’s U.S. store. Its central limitation is that Roku does not publish a conventional total-lumen rating, so it is best treated as decorative or ambient lighting—not a substitute for a room’s main light.
Verdict: who should consider the Roku Smart Light Strip SE?
Consider the SE for indoor TV bias lighting, a desk, bed, or cabinets if you want one consistent color across the strip, basic schedules and presets, and voice control without paying for a premium lighting system. It does not require a Roku TV: setup and everyday smart control run through the Roku Smart Home app, and Roku lists Alexa and Google Assistant support as well.

Choose another product if you need outdoor-rated lighting, independently colored sections, confirmed Apple Home or Matter support, measured output for task lighting, or direct TV-screen color matching. The SE is also a less compelling buy if it is unavailable at a reasonable retailer price: Roku’s listed prices do not mean the products can currently be ordered from Roku.

What is included, and what are the specifications?
The Roku Smart Light Strip SE is an indoor-only, adhesive-backed LED strip with a controller and power adapter. Roku offers 16.4-foot (5 m) and 32.8-foot (10 m) versions. The package includes ten adhesive clips and two alcohol wipes. Roku lists 16 million colors, adjustable white temperature from 1,800 to 6,500 K, a claimed CRI of 90+, and a claimed life expectancy of 25,000 hours. These are manufacturer specifications, not independent measurements.

Roku’s product page uses the model suffixes LS1016R and LS1032R, while its firmware notes use LS1016 and LS1032. If checking firmware or support information, compare the model printed on the strip or box rather than assuming the identifiers are interchangeable. Roku lists firmware version 1.2.1.13 for LS1016 and LS1032, describing it as a security enhancement and a faster firmware-update process; version 1.2.1.2 is listed as the initial release. Roku Smart Home firmware release notes.
How well does it light a space?
The strip offers color, brightness, and white-temperature adjustments, but Roku does not publish a conventional total-output or white-mode lumen rating for the product. Roku lists separate RGB output figures per LED at 20 mA—blue at 0.8 lm, red at 1.0 lm, and green at 2.5 lm—and specifies 30 LEDs per meter. Those component figures are not a directly comparable total-lumen rating for the assembled strip or a measured assessment of room brightness.
Plan to use it for reflected accent light behind a TV, beneath a bed, along a desk, or under cabinets. Do not rely on it as the only light for reading, cooking, or general room illumination. Its 16-million-color specification describes a range of selectable colors; it does not establish color accuracy, brightness, uniformity, or diffusion quality. Roku’s specifications for the Smart Light Strip SE.
Controls and smart-home features
In the Roku Smart Home app, you can select a static color, adjust brightness and white temperature, save presets, and schedule changes to power, brightness, and temperature. Roku also lists sleep and vacation modes, music synchronization through a microphone built into the controller, and synchronization of multiple Roku strips in the app. The microphone’s location matters if music mode is a priority: keep the controller accessible and avoid burying it behind furniture.

Roku lists control through Roku Voice, Amazon Alexa, and Google Assistant. This is smart-home and voice integration, not direct synchronization with what is playing on a Roku TV screen. Apple Home/HomeKit, Matter, Thread, Zigbee, Z-Wave, and Home Assistant compatibility are not documented in Roku’s current product specifications, so do not assume support for them.

What you can do without the app
Roku documents two physical buttons on the controller. A single press on the front button turns the strip on and changes color; a long press turns it off. A single press on the side button powers it on and changes modes; holding that side button enters pairing mode. A connected wall switch can also turn power to the strip on or off. These provide basic control, but do not establish that schedules, scenes, remote access, or every smart feature will work without the app or network.
Roku also documents Alexa and Google Assistant control, but those services still depend on their respective setup and availability. Roku’s instructions for controlling smart lights without the app.
Installation: prepare the route before sticking it down
Installation is a sequence of app pairing and surface mounting. The strip needs a nearby outlet, and its controller and adapter should remain accessible. Plan where the strip will turn and where the controller will sit before peeling the backing: sharp folds can damage the strip, and tight corners can put stress on the adhesive and LEDs. Clean and dry the mounting surface; the included wipes help with preparation, but the adhesive’s long-term hold is not guaranteed on dusty, textured, damp, or greasy surfaces. Use the supplied clips where extra support is needed.
- Install the Roku Smart Home app on a compatible iOS or Android phone and connect the phone to a 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi network.
- Connect the strip to its controller, then plug in the 12 V adapter.
- In the app, select Add Device, choose Light Strip, and follow the pairing prompts.
- Clean the mounting area with a supplied alcohol wipe and let it dry. Route the strip with corners and controller access in mind.
- Unroll the strip gradually, peel the adhesive backing as you go, and press the strip into place. Add clips where support is needed.
- If shortening the strip, cut only at a marked cut point. The removed piece cannot operate separately because it is no longer connected to the controller.
Roku’s quick-start guide, 16-foot installation guide, and 32-foot installation guide provide the documented setup flow. The cut-off section is not a second usable strip, so measure the route carefully before trimming.

2.4 GHz pairing problems and reset steps
The strip requires 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi. If setup fails on a router that combines 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz under one network name, the phone may remain connected to 5 GHz while you are pairing. As practical troubleshooting, try temporarily disabling the 5 GHz band or creating a dedicated 2.4 GHz network; keep the phone and strip near the router, and avoid a guest network that blocks devices from communicating with one another.

If pairing still fails, reset the strip and add it again:
- Connect the strip to its controller and plug in the power adapter.
- Press and hold the controller’s side button for 10 seconds.
- Wait for the strip to pulse blue, Roku’s stated reset confirmation.
- Open the Roku Smart Home app and add the strip again.
Roku’s factory-reset instructions document the procedure. The band and guest-network suggestions are practical network troubleshooting, not a guarantee that every router’s pairing problem has the same cause.

The key difference is how color is controlled: the regular SE changes color across the whole strip, while the Plus SE offers individually controllable one-foot sections. Both are indoor-only and list 16 million colors, music sync, Roku Voice/Alexa/Google Assistant support, and 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi. The Plus SE’s product page lists tunable white as a feature but does not state a temperature range in the supplied specifications.

If you want multi-color patterns along the strip, the Plus SE’s one-foot zones may justify the added cost; at the listed prices, its 32.8-foot version was only $5 more than the regular 32.8-foot SE. Which alternatives fit different needs?
- More budget effects and model choice: Govee has a broad range of RGB and segmented-effect strips. Compare the exact model’s control features and current price; no current competitor price is established here. Govee’s U.S. store.
- A broader premium lighting system: Philips Hue is a better direction if you are building around its lighting ecosystem and accept that hardware and accessories cost more than a simple budget strip. Philips Hue U.S..
- Standards-oriented integration: Nanoleaf Essentials may suit buyers seeking Matter- or Thread-oriented control, but compatibility, border-router or hub needs depend on the exact current model. Check those requirements before purchasing. Nanoleaf’s U.S. store.
- TV or screen-related lighting: Compare dedicated TV-backlight or sync products from brands such as WiZ, Govee, Nanoleaf, or Hue. Do not assume an ordinary light strip reacts to screen content; distinguish a dedicated sync kit from a standard strip. WiZ product range.
For qualitative context, BGR’s older review described the SE as visually similar to inexpensive competing strips and pointed readers toward Philips Hue or Govee for needs beyond the budget category. Treat that coverage as older commentary, not evidence of current pricing, firmware, app behavior, or a controlled comparison. Roku’s product page displayed 4.8/5 from 41 customer reviews, including 37 five-star, two four-star, and two one-star ratings; 93% of those displayed reviewers recommended it. That is manufacturer-hosted customer sentiment from a small, self-selected sample, not independent product testing. BGR’s Roku Smart Light Strip SE review.
Final buying guidance
The Roku Smart Light Strip SE is a sensible low-cost pick for simple indoor accent lighting when the listed price is attainable and a single color across the strip is enough. Buy the Plus SE instead when one-foot section effects matter and the price difference is acceptable. Look to Govee for a wider selection of effect-focused budget strips, or to Hue or Nanoleaf when ecosystem depth or standards-based integration is the priority. Whichever model you choose, verify retailer stock and compatibility for your exact setup before ordering.
