The meaningful distinction is usually capacity. Standard glasses hold about 6–8 ounces, while double rocks or double Old Fashioned (DOF) glasses commonly hold about 10–14 ounces, depending on the maker.
What each name means
Rocks glass
A rocks glass is a short tumbler designed for a spirit served “on the rocks,” meaning over ice. It is also used for cocktails that are built, stirred, or served over ice in the glass itself. “Lowball” and “short tumbler” are common synonyms.
Old Fashioned glass
An Old Fashioned glass normally has the same lowball shape. Its name comes from the Old Fashioned cocktail, which is traditionally served in this style of glass. Virginia ABC groups the names as “Rocks / Old Fashioned Glass,” and Wine Enthusiast identifies a rocks glass as another name for an Old Fashioned glass.
Double rocks and double Old Fashioned glasses
A double rocks glass or double Old Fashioned glass is the larger version of the same basic form. “Double” describes capacity, not a different cocktail-glass shape. The Bar describes a double Old Fashioned as 10–12 ounces, while Libbey Foodservice lists 12–14 ounces for the DOF category.

How the shape and size differ
Both standard and double versions are low-profile, broad, thick-based, and flat-bottomed. The wide opening leaves room for ice, lets aromas reach your nose, and makes it practical to muddle or stir ingredients in the serving glass. A heavy base improves stability, particularly when the drink contains a large cube.
| Format | Typical capacity | Best suited to | Capacity source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard rocks / Old Fashioned | 6–8 oz | Neat pours, classic Old Fashioneds, and smaller drinks over ice | The Bar |
| Double rocks / double Old Fashioned (DOF) | 10–12 oz | Large-format ice, larger pours, and drinks with more mixer | The Bar |
| Double Old Fashioned (DOF) category | 12–14 oz | Higher-volume serves, depending on the product | Libbey Foodservice |
These ranges overlap because manufacturers do not use capacity labels identically. Check the listed ounce capacity and dimensions rather than relying only on “rocks,” “Old Fashioned,” or “double” in a product title.

Which size should you use?
Neat whiskey, bourbon, or Scotch
Choose a standard 6–8-ounce glass. Its smaller volume keeps a modest pour from appearing lost and gives the drinker a comfortable opening for smelling the spirit. A double glass works, but it is generally unnecessary unless you prefer extra room or a larger serving.
A classic Old Fashioned
Use a standard rocks or Old Fashioned glass with one large cube or several smaller cubes. The broad, stable base accommodates the ice and the drink’s traditional compact volume without leaving excessive empty space.

Negronis and other stirred drinks
Either size can work. Select the glass according to the drink’s total volume and the amount of ice you plan to use. A standard glass suits a compact serve; a double gives more room when dilution, a large cube, or additional volume would make the smaller format crowded.
Larger pours, large ice, or a mixer
Choose a double rocks or DOF glass when the drink needs a large cube, includes a substantial mixer, or uses a larger pour. The extra capacity reduces spill risk and leaves enough space to add and remove ice comfortably.

Is a double rocks glass the same as a double Old Fashioned?
Usually, yes. In ordinary bar and retail usage, both names refer to the larger lowball format. The exact capacity still varies by manufacturer: one “double” may be listed at 10–12 ounces and another at 12–14 ounces. Compare the specifications when matching a recipe, a bar program, or an existing set.
What to check when buying a set
- Capacity: Pick standard 6–8-ounce glasses for neat pours and classic Old Fashioneds; pick double glasses in the 10–14-ounce range for larger drinks and ice.
- Interior width: Confirm that the opening can accept the large cube or sphere you use. Exterior dimensions alone can be misleading because thick walls reduce usable space.
- Base weight and stability: A substantial, flat base is less likely to tip when muddling or stirring.
- Rim comfort: A smooth, evenly finished rim matters because this glass is commonly sipped directly.
- Durability and care: Check whether the manufacturer rates the glass for dishwasher use and whether the construction suits frequent service.
- Set format: Verify whether the listing contains standard or double glasses; photographs often make the two sizes look deceptively similar.
Why the glass affects the drink
Glassware changes more than appearance. The width controls how ice sits in the drink, the opening affects aroma, and the weight and rim influence how the glass feels in the hand and at the lips. As bartender Tim Sweeney told Bon Appétit, “The glassware your drink is served in will affect at least four of your five senses.” Those design effects are why the same recipe can feel different in a standard and a double glass, even when the ingredients are unchanged.

A quick decision guide
- Serving a modest neat pour? Choose a standard rocks/Old Fashioned glass.
- Making a traditional Old Fashioned? Choose standard size unless the recipe or ice requires more room.
- Using one oversized cube or a large sphere? Measure the interior and consider a double format if the ice crowds the drink.
- Adding a generous mixer or making a larger serve? Choose a double rocks/DOF glass.
- Comparing two products with the same label? Use the stated ounce capacity and internal dimensions as the deciding specifications.
