A flexible mechanism steers the nozzle, while a separate button starts or stops the water. The project suggests one way future kitchens could make sink tasks easier, but it does not report product availability, performance testing, or demonstrated accessibility outcomes.
What does the robotic sink actually do?
Jake Ammons, identified by Hackster as a Clemson University PhD student, created a prototype that lets an operator aim a sink nozzle without moving it by hand. The controls described are straightforward: a joystick directs the nozzle, and a button controls water flow.
That can help with chores that involve directing rinse water around a sink, but the source does not describe the device scrubbing dishes, identifying objects, or loading a dishwasher. It is a manually controlled nozzle prototype, not an autonomous dishwashing system. Hackster’s project article is the source for the prototype and its described operation.
How does the nozzle move?
The nozzle is moved by a flexible, tendon-driven mechanism. As the project write-up puts it, “Motors at the base of the faucet adjust the lengths of three tendons that pass through the pipe to the end of the hose.” Changing the tendon lengths bends and repositions the hose nozzle; a solenoid valve switches water flow on or off.

This describes a way to steer the outlet, not a system that decides where to aim. The operator supplies that direction through the joystick.
Could it make kitchen tasks easier?
The project’s motivation includes the possibility that an aimable nozzle and controllable flow could help some people with disabilities. That is a proposed application, not a measured accessibility benefit: Hackster’s article does not report user testing, outcomes for a particular group, or a formal accessibility evaluation.

For a construction or renovation project, the distinction matters. This prototype is not established as a faucet that can be specified, installed, or relied on in a home. If the practical need is to direct rinse water more easily, a conventional kitchen faucet sprayer attachment is a separate, nonrobotic option; compatibility depends on the faucet and the particular attachment.
What features are future ideas rather than demonstrated functions?
The project write-up says, “Future research may include adding computer vision, flow measurement, and interoperability with other assistive robots.” Those are possibilities for further research, not features the described prototype is shown to have. No performance figures, cost, time saved, accuracy measurements, or user-study results are reported in the Hackster article.

How it differs from other kitchen-robot concepts
Several other projects use robotics around sinks or kitchens, but they should not be mistaken for this joystick-operated nozzle:
- SinkMate describes a separate robot intended to load a dishwasher and says it is accepting waitlist reservations. Its vendor claims are not independent verification of performance, and it is not Ammons’s prototype.
- Moley Robotics’ January 12, 2021 announcement describes a bespoke, integrated robotic kitchen that can use a sink while preparing food. It is a broader kitchen installation, not evidence of a retail robotic faucet. The announcement’s historical pricing description should not be read as a current price.
- A patent application for a robotic faucet describes proposed embodiments. A patent application is not proof that a product is commercially available or that its performance has been validated.
Kitchen manipulation also remains a difficult robotics problem. Toyota Research Institute’s discussion notes challenges such as detecting small, shiny silverware and coordinating a robot with dishwasher drawers. That context helps explain why a controllable nozzle is a different and narrower task from a robot that handles an entire dishwashing workflow.

Can you buy or build this prototype?
The Hackster article does not identify a retail product, complete bill of materials, model numbers, or full construction instructions for Ammons’s prototype. The separate projects and patent above do not establish that this nozzle is available to purchase. It is therefore not possible to treat the article as a buying guide or a complete DIY build plan.
