Yes, the story was real—but it did not mean every robot vacuum was hacked. In October 2024, owners of Ecovacs DEEBOT X2-series vacuums reported that their robots moved without permission and broadcast racist abuse or other insults. Separate security research demonstrated that certain Ecovacs robots could potentially expose camera and audio functions and be remotely controlled.
The documented problem involved specific Ecovacs devices, vulnerabilities and firmware versions—not robot vacuums as a whole. Owners should verify their firmware, secure their accounts and treat camera-equipped connected vacuums as internet-connected computers rather than ordinary appliances.

What happened?
Several U.S. owners reported unusual behavior from Ecovacs DEEBOT X2-series robots in October 2024. Reports described vacuums moving under apparent third-party control and playing racist slurs, obscenities or other insults through their speakers. Some accounts also described robots chasing pets or being repositioned toward people; those details come from individual reports and should not be treated as universal behavior.
One reported victim, Minnesota lawyer Daniel Swenson, said he saw unauthorized access to his vacuum’s live camera and remote-control functions before hearing abusive speech from the device. Malwarebytes reported his account and related incidents.

ABC News separately reported a researcher taking control of a range of Ecovacs robots and accessing camera-related functionality. The report said Ecovacs had been warned about a vulnerability in December 2023. These demonstrations were security research, not proof that every device was actively exploited in the same way as the reported household incidents.
What could an attacker access?
Depending on the model, firmware, account access and vulnerability, an attacker could potentially reach functions such as:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Remote driving or movement.
- Live camera viewing.
- Audio or microphone-related functions.
- The robot’s speakers.
- Household maps and layout information.
- App-linked controls and account functions.
The DEEBOT X2 OMNI manual documents a microphone, voice recording and voice-control features, an AI camera, video recording and 3D mapping assistance. That establishes the device’s surveillance-capable features; it does not prove that every compromised robot recorded continuously, transmitted all available data or stored footage.
The most precise description is that unauthorized users were reported or demonstrated to have access to camera and remote-control features on certain Ecovacs robots. The public evidence does not show that every owner’s data was stolen.
How did the security problem work?
Public reporting discussed more than one issue. One reported weakness involved a four-digit PIN intended to protect remote viewing and control. Researchers said the PIN was checked in the mobile app rather than being robustly enforced by the server or robot, creating a way for the system to treat the PIN as successfully entered.
Separately, Ecovacs published a November 19, 2024 advisory about a Bluetooth remote-code-execution vulnerability affecting several DEEBOT products. The advisory described technical conditions under which an attacker could compromise an affected device.

- 5. Note: The 11s Max does not support WiFi or app connectivity; all operations are performed using the remote control and the buttons on the device.
These findings should not be simplified into “someone hacked the Wi-Fi,” and they should not be treated as proof that the PIN issue caused every reported abuse incident. The possible attack paths included app logic, account access, Bluetooth exposure and device-level vulnerabilities.
Was it just a stolen password?
Ecovacs reportedly suggested that attackers may have obtained customer credentials and used credential stuffing. That explanation was questioned because access to camera and remote-control features also involved a separate PIN and other technical weaknesses.
A compromised password may have been part of an attack path, but the public reporting and research indicate that account credentials were not necessarily the only security issue. This was not established as a confirmed breach of Ecovacs’ corporate network, and changing an account password alone cannot be assumed to repair a device-level vulnerability.
Ecovacs firmware updates
In its November 19, 2024 security advisory, Ecovacs listed these patched firmware versions:

Ecovacs said devices supporting automatic updates would receive notifications and that it had proactively pushed the update. Firmware availability can vary by country, model variant and app state, so simply owning an X2 does not prove that it is patched. Open the Ecovacs app, find the robot’s firmware information and compare the installed version with the official Ecovacs advisory and current support documentation.
As of August 18, 2026, the available sources establish the 2024 reports and Ecovacs’ listed patches. They do not establish that every affected device was updated or that no related vulnerabilities remain.

What Ecovacs owners should do now
If the robot is behaving strangely
- Turn it off. Stop using the robot if it moves unexpectedly, speaks without authorization or appears to expose its camera or microphone.
- Disconnect it from Wi-Fi. Use the router’s device controls if the app cannot safely control the robot.
- Unplug the charging station if necessary. This can prevent automatic reconnection or charging while you investigate.
- Change the Ecovacs account password. Use a unique password that has never been used on another service.
- Change reused passwords elsewhere. Reusing the same password can expose other accounts if one credential is compromised.
- Review account access and connected devices. Use any relevant controls available in the Ecovacs app.
- Update the app and robot firmware through official channels once the device can be handled safely.
- Preserve evidence. Save screenshots, timestamps and relevant router logs, then contact Ecovacs support.
- Factory-reset only after documenting the event. A reset may erase useful evidence, and it does not replace a firmware update.
Rebooting or changing a password may be sensible immediate steps, but reported behavior showed that those actions did not necessarily stop the problem by themselves.
Improve network containment
- Put the robot on a separate guest or IoT network.
- Temporarily block its internet access after setup if essential cleaning functions still work locally.
- Disable UPnP unless you specifically need it.
- Use a router that displays connected-device history.
- Never expose the robot directly to the internet through port forwarding.
These are general defensive measures, not proof that any particular router setting would have prevented the 2024 incidents.
Does this affect all robot vacuums?
No. The reported incidents centered on Ecovacs DEEBOT products, especially the X2 line. There is no basis for saying that Roomba, Roborock, Dreame, Shark or every other brand was involved in the same incident.
The broader security lesson does apply to any connected household robot with a camera, microphone, cloud control, remote driving, mapping or a long period without firmware support. A robot with motors and sensors can present greater privacy and safety consequences than an appliance that merely reports its power usage.
What “spy on owners” does—and does not—mean
“Spy on” is headline shorthand, not a complete technical finding. The stronger, more accurate claims are:
- Unauthorized access to a live camera feed was reported or demonstrated on certain devices.
- Audio or microphone-related functions could potentially be reached, depending on the model and vulnerability.
- Some robots create household maps, but that does not mean an attacker viewed a complete floor plan in every case.
- The available evidence does not prove that every device was always recording or that all owners’ data was exfiltrated.

Camera-based obstacle avoidance and remote viewing can improve navigation and convenience, but they also expand the privacy and security exposure. Camera-free or LiDAR-based models may give up some object-recognition and pet-avoidance features in exchange for a smaller surveillance surface.
Camera-free commercial models
iRobot’s support documentation describes some Roomba navigation configurations as having no camera, while separate documentation confirms that other models use camera-based obstacle-image features. Therefore, “Roomba” is not a single privacy category. Check the specification and support documentation for the exact model before buying. See iRobot’s no-camera support information and its camera-based obstacle-image documentation.
Cloud-free alternatives
Valetudo is an open-source, cloud-free project for supported robot vacuums. Its compatibility depends on the exact robot and firmware. Installation may require technical skill, device disassembly or firmware work, can void a warranty and may remove manufacturer-supported functions. It is not a universal fix and should not be treated as a routine response to an actively compromised device.
What remains unknown
The public record does not establish that every Ecovacs owner was affected, that every X2 device was vulnerable in exactly the same way, that every compromised robot recorded or transmitted private data, or that all historical and future vulnerabilities have been eliminated by the listed patches.
It also does not support blaming the incident on a manufacturer’s country of origin. The relevant questions are technical: how authentication is enforced, what sensors are present, where data goes, how quickly vulnerabilities are disclosed and patched, and how long the product receives support.
