Roborock Debuts a Wheel-Legged Robot Vacuum That Climbs Stairs—but It Isn’t Available Yet

Roborock’s Saros Rover climbed stairs at CES 2026 using articulated wheel-legs, but it remains an in-development demonstration with no confirmed price or release date.

Roborock has demonstrated a robot vacuum climbing stairs, but the Saros Rover is not currently a retail product. Unveiled at CES 2026 on January 6, the prototype uses independently controlled wheel-legs to raise, lower and reposition itself across stairs and uneven ground. Roborock has not announced a confirmed price or release date.

What Roborock announced

The Roborock Saros Rover was unveiled in Las Vegas at CES 2026. Roborock describes it as the world’s first robot vacuum with a two-wheel-leg architecture—a claim that should be attributed to the company rather than treated as an independently certified industry standard.

Unlike a conventional robot vacuum, the Saros Rover combines wheels with articulated legs. Roborock says the system can independently lift and lower each wheel-leg, adjust its height and maintain a level body while traveling over changing terrain. The company’s announcement describes the product as being in development.

Can the Saros Rover really climb stairs?

In CES demonstrations, the machine climbed a staircase and moved across slopes and uneven surfaces. The wheel-legs were also shown supporting turns, sudden stops, directional changes and small jumps. Roborock says its AI algorithms, motion sensors and 3D spatial information help the robot interpret its surroundings and control its movements.

That demonstration establishes that the concept can climb the particular stairs shown at the event. It does not establish that a final consumer model will safely handle every staircase.

Important unanswered questions include the maximum riser height and tread depth, performance on carpet or polished flooring, operation on spiral or narrow stairs, safe descent, and behavior around irregular edges. Roborock has indicated that the system is intended to handle different staircase layouts, including spiral stairs, but that remains a company claim rather than an independently verified specification.

Does it clean the stairs while climbing?

Roborock says the Saros Rover can clean individual stair steps as it travels between floors. However, the published material does not establish how effectively it cleans stair corners, edges, vertical risers or the back of each tread.

There are also no confirmed details about brush width, suction performance, mopping, dustbin capacity during a multilevel run, stair-carpet behavior or the robot’s ability to remove debris from tight corners. “Can climb while cleaning” should not be confused with “provides complete stair cleaning.”

How it differs from current threshold-climbing robots

The Saros Rover should not be confused with Roborock’s existing AdaptiLift systems. Models such as the Saros 20 can raise their chassis to cross tall door thresholds, rug edges and floor transitions. Roborock lists the Saros 20 as supporting a single threshold up to 4.5 cm (1.77 inches), or a double-layer transition of approximately 4.5 cm plus 4 cm.

That is not the same as climbing a staircase:

  • Threshold lifting: raises a chassis or wheel assembly a limited amount to cross one floor transition.
  • Stair climbing: repeatedly lifts and repositions the robot over multiple vertical risers while maintaining traction and balance.

Calling the Saros 20 a stair-climbing robot would therefore be inaccurate. Its threshold capability is useful for some split-level or open-plan homes, but it does not provide autonomous floor-to-floor travel.

See Roborock’s Saros 20 specifications.

What “AI-powered” means here

In this context, “AI-powered” describes Roborock’s claim that software combines sensor data, 3D spatial information and motion algorithms to control the wheel-legs. The announcement does not provide a processor model, named AI system, training-data description, failure-rate measurement or independent validation.

It should not be read as proof that the robot can safely navigate every home without supervision. Stair safety depends on hardware, traction, sensing, software recovery behavior and the specific design of the staircase.

Is the Roborock Saros Rover available to buy?

Not according to the available announcement and retail information. Roborock has not confirmed a consumer price, firm launch date or normal retail listing for the Saros Rover. Its U.S. store currently lists products including the Saros 20, Saros 20 Sonic, Saros Z70, Saros 10R and Qrevo CurvX, but not the Saros Rover.

For now, the accurate description is announced, demonstrated and in development. It should not be described as a robot vacuum that consumers can buy today.

See the CES announcement’s availability qualification or check Roborock’s current U.S. store.

Why stair climbing matters

Most robot vacuums are designed for a single floor. Cliff sensors and no-go zones help prevent them from approaching stairs, but the robot normally must be carried to another level. Owners of multistory homes consequently need to carry one machine between floors, buy separate robots or clean stairs manually.

Roborock’s app supports multilevel mapping—up to four floors according to the company—but mapping does not give the robot a way to physically move between those floors. The Saros Rover’s proposed advantage is a single machine that could navigate between levels and clean areas ordinary circular robots cannot reach.

What would need to be proven before buying one

A commercially useful stair-climbing vacuum would need to demonstrate more than a successful trade-show ascent. Buyers should look for:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Reliable ascent and descent over repeated runs.
  2. Compatibility with common stair heights, depths and surfaces.
  3. Safe recovery when a wheel-leg loses traction.
  4. Obstacle detection for shoes, toys, clothing and pet items.
  5. Effective cleaning near walls, nosings, corners and risers.
  6. Safe turning on narrow landings.
  7. Sufficient battery capacity after repeated lifting cycles.
  8. A practical docking, charging and mapping arrangement across floors.
  9. A remote-stop or safety-lockout feature.
  10. Warranty coverage and replacement parts for the articulated mechanism.

The leg system could make stairs accessible, but it also introduces more motors, joints, sensors and software than a conventional four-wheel robot. That may increase maintenance requirements and the consequences of a mechanical or navigation failure. A slip on a staircase could damage the robot, flooring or nearby objects.

Should you wait for the Saros Rover?

Wait if autonomous stair travel is your specific requirement, but do not buy a current Roborock model assuming it provides the same capability. Before considering the Saros Rover, look for a confirmed retail listing, final specifications, independent stair testing, published safety guidance and warranty information.

If you need a dependable solution now, the practical options are:

  • One robot per floor: the most predictable hands-off arrangement, with each machine left near its own dock.
  • Carry one robot between floors: works with current multilevel mapping but still requires manual handling.
  • Use a handheld or stick vacuum: usually faster and more controllable for risers, edges, narrow landings and cluttered stairs.
  • Use a threshold-capable Roborock: suitable for tall floor transitions, not flights of stairs.

Current store prices and promotions change. The Saros 20, Saros 20 Sonic, Saros Z70, Saros 10R and Qrevo CurvX are existing alternatives for floor cleaning or threshold handling, but none should be presented as an autonomous stair-climbing replacement.

The bottom line

Roborock’s Saros Rover is a significant demonstration of how wheel-legs might overcome one of robot vacuums’ biggest limitations. It climbed stairs at CES 2026 and could represent a meaningful step toward whole-home robotic cleaning. But it remains a developing product, with no confirmed price, retail availability or launch date. Until independent testing and final specifications arrive, treat it as promising technology—not a stair vacuum you can buy or rely on today.
