It deposits ink between layers of light-colored or translucent filament, creating an inkjet-colored surface without changing filament for every color. That makes it promising for makers—but it is currently a beta project, not a plug-and-play professional full-color printer.
PolyDye is best suited to advanced users comfortable with printer modifications, wiring, firmware, calibration, and closely monitored test prints.

How PolyDye works
An ordinary FDM printer builds an object one filament layer at a time. PolyDye adds a cartridge holder and control electronics that move an inkjet cartridge over the exposed layer:
- The printer deposits a white, light-colored, or translucent filament layer.
- The cartridge applies ink to the exposed surface.
- The printer continues with the next filament layer.
- The process repeats, building up colored surfaces.
This is closer to surface-colored FDM printing than to a purpose-built industrial full-color printer. “Full color” describes the intended color-deposition capability, not guaranteed professional color accuracy, durability, or coverage on every surface.

Why use ink instead of multicolor filament?
| Consideration | PolyDye | Multicolor filament |
|---|---|---|
| Color selection | Potentially image-like surface color | Limited to loaded filament colors and changes |
| Material waste | May reduce filament purge waste, but uses ink and calibration prints | Can create purge towers, wipes, and discarded filament |
| Reliability | Experimental and manually calibrated | Generally more mature |
| Surface finish | Ink may bleed, smear, or register imperfectly | Color is part of the filament |
| Setup | Requires electronics, mounting, firmware, and alignment | Usually supported by an established ecosystem |
PolyDye’s attraction is that a user may obtain many colors without loading a separate filament for each one. However, it does not eliminate waste or maintenance; it exchanges some filament-changing work for ink handling, calibration, failed prints, and cartridge maintenance.

The official material describes support for Marlin 2.0 or later printers with a suitable mount. The documented repository release is Marlin-only. Do not assume that a Klipper printer will work unless the current repository provides a tested Klipper build and instructions.
A demonstration installation used an Elegoo Neptune 2, but that does not prove universal compatibility. Before attempting the modification, check:
- Marlin version and configuration.
- USB connection and communication stability.
- Clearance around the hotend, bed, clips, frame, cable chains, and gantry.
- Whether the cartridge holder can be mounted securely.
- Whether the printer can execute the required movement and synchronization commands.
- Whether start G-code, homing, acceleration, and bed leveling conflict with the PolyDye workflow.
- Whether the added hardware fits within the usable build area.
PolyDye is a poor choice if you need a production appliance, repeatable certified color, unattended printing, or a modification-free printer.
What hardware is required?
PolyDye electronics and supplied project parts
The documented hardware includes a main board, cartridge interface board, daughter board, ribbon and FPC cables, an inverted JST power cable, and related connection hardware. The repository also contains firmware-related files, printable models, SD-card files, slicer settings, and a Blender plug-in.

Additional items
Depending on the kit and printer, you may need:
- A compatible inkjet cartridge and cartridge holder.
- Printer-specific mounting parts and printed components.
- An SD card and USB cables.
- A Raspberry Pi 5.1 V power supply as specified by the project.
- M3×6 and M3×8 screws and a screwdriver.
- White or translucent filament.
- Tools and skills for wiring, firmware, calibration, and troubleshooting.
Do not assume every item is included. The official project describes beta kits as requiring additional user-supplied components.
Existing inkjet cartridges are not universally compatible
The phrase “existing inkjet cartridges” does not mean that any cartridge can be installed. The repository credits earlier work involving HP 803 cartridges, including pinouts and sample code, but this is not a universal compatibility guarantee.
Before buying or reusing a cartridge, verify:
- Electrical interface, pinout, and driver-board compatibility.
- Nozzle behavior and physical fit.
- Ink formulation and solvent.
- Whether the cartridge is new, refilled, or electronically locked.
- Replacement availability and cost.
- Whether the ink bonds to the selected filament without excessive bleeding or smearing.
The official site also states that PolyDye is not affiliated with a cartridge manufacturer. Treat any cartridge as project-referenced hardware, not a guaranteed drop-in consumable.
Filament choice affects the result
Reported testing has used translucent filament and white materials including Creality Hyper Series White and CR-PLA White. White filament can provide a bright base; translucent filament may allow color to accumulate through layers but can also reduce contrast or change perceived saturation.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesDark filament will generally make inkjet color difficult to see. Surface temperature, gloss, absorption, and polymer chemistry may affect adhesion. Water-based inks may behave differently from solvent or UV-curable inks. Possible problems include beading, bleeding, slow drying, and smearing.
The available documentation does not establish a universal ink-and-filament compatibility chart or prove that ink has no effect on interlayer adhesion. Test small samples before using the process for functional, moisture-exposed, or mechanically loaded parts.
Installation and mounting
The official assembly guide gives this general sequence:
Rank #3
- Cost-Effective Filament Bundle: Get 2 "1kg" spools of PLA filament for the price of 1 with classic black and white color
- Smooth and Stable Printing: Patented design and manufacturing process ensures smooth, clog-free printing
- Durable and Strong: Improved toughness and strength for printing functional parts
- Compatible with Most Printers: Works with 99% of FDM and FFF 3D printers with heated beds
- Renewable Material: Made from starch derived from renewable plant resources for environmental friendliness
- Home the printer and lower the nozzle until it touches or nearly touches the bed.
- Attach the cartridge holder to the hotend mount with the screws initially loose.
- Set approximately 1.0–1.5 mm clearance from the bed.
- Check for collisions with bed clips, the build plate, shrouds, wiring, and frame components.
- Tighten the holder and install the interface and daughter boards.
- Connect the FPC cable with the correct retainer and orientation.
- Install the main board in its enclosure and connect the JST, ribbon, and USB cables.
- Use the recommended external power supply—not a PC or laptop USB port.
- Flash or update firmware only according to the current repository instructions.
- Configure Wi-Fi if required and calibrate before printing.
The small bed-clearance value is critical. A holder that clips the bed, drags across a print, or catches on a cable can damage both the modification and the printer.

Software workflow
PolyDye is not described as a one-click process. The reported workflow uses several separate stages:
- Prepare or export the colored 3D model.
- Use the project’s Blender plug-in or model-processing files where appropriate.
- Slice the geometry in OrcaSlicer with the project’s settings.
- Generate or copy the ink instructions to the PolyDye SD card.
- Install the cartridge and align the ink pattern with the printed object.
- Run a small, closely monitored test.
- Adjust offsets, coverage, and material settings before attempting a larger model.
Repository files and instructions may change frequently, so use the version-specific files supplied with the current release rather than combining old firmware, slicer profiles, and calibration values.
Power, firmware, and network setup
The official guide says not to power the unit from a PC or laptop and recommends the specified Raspberry Pi 5.1 V supply. Beta units may arrive preflashed; DIY firmware updates are performed through an SD card. Incorrect flashing can damage the unit.
For Wi-Fi setup, the guide describes entering credentials in wifi.txt. After inserting the card and power-cycling, the interface may be available at http://phantom.local. If that name does not resolve, use the IP address assigned by the router.
These instructions are version-sensitive. Check the current guide and repository before applying them.
Calibration is the central quality step
Good results depend on more than simply attaching the cartridge. Calibrate:

Use a small test pattern before a full model. Check for colored halos, shifted graphics, uneven coverage, bleed, and smearing. Save the working offsets and document the printer, firmware, cartridge, filament, and project revision used.
Repository release notes describe simplified XY alignment and changes to automatic offset handling. They also document a release-specific YohY=184000 value. That is not a universal calibration constant; never copy it without identifying the relevant software revision.
Known operational risks
The project’s release notes identify important beta-stage problems:
- The unit may need to be power-cycled before each print and after stopping an unfinished print.
- It may continue sending G-code after a stopped print, creating a risk of printer damage.
- Intermittent freezing can stop a print.
- Prints must be monitored rather than left unattended.
- A
;waitforlevelline may be required afterG29in affected start G-code. - In the cited release, adding that line changed the required Y offset by approximately 5.9 mm.
These are release-specific notes, not guaranteed behavior for every future version. Confirm the current repository instructions before editing start G-code.
Safe response to abnormal behavior
- Stop the print if motion, ink, or registration becomes abnormal.
- Safely power down the printer and PolyDye unit.
- Do not immediately resume the interrupted job.
- Power-cycle the PolyDye unit before the next attempt.
- Inspect the USB, FPC, JST, and ribbon connections.
- Confirm firmware and repository versions.
- Review bed-leveling commands and any required
;waitforlevelplacement. - Recheck alignment with a small test print.
Expected print quality
PolyDye may offer a broad range of surface colors without loading a filament for each shade. It retains the underlying strengths of FDM, including familiar materials and custom geometry. It also retains FDM’s layer lines.
Expect possible limitations on overhangs, undersides, vertical walls, recesses, and areas that the cartridge cannot address consistently. Color may be weak or uneven, and registration errors can produce halos. Ink may remain vulnerable to abrasion, water, UV exposure, or chemicals. A clear protective coating could help, but test it first for smearing, solvent interaction, and changes in appearance.

Alternatives
Multicolor filament systems
These are generally better for users who prioritize mature software, predictable material behavior, and stronger built-in color. Their disadvantages include loaded-color limits, filament changes, purge towers, wipe waste, and longer jobs.
Painting after printing
Painting is inexpensive, repairable, and often more durable when paired with a suitable primer and clear coat. It requires manual labor and may be less repeatable for fine multicolor graphics.
HueForge-style techniques
HueForge-style workflows use carefully selected filament layers and tonal stacking rather than inkjet deposition. They can be effective for flat or relief artwork but are not a substitute for PolyDye’s intended all-over surface-coloring method.
Recommended Free Tools
Commercial full-color printers
Purpose-built systems can offer better-controlled color deposition and software, but typically cost more and may rely on proprietary materials or cartridges. Compare them by color control, durability, build volume, maintenance, consumables, software maturity, and replacement-part availability.
Is PolyDye worth attempting?
Consider PolyDye if you already own a Marlin-based printer, enjoy hardware experimentation, can fabricate or print mounts, understand wiring and firmware, and are willing to monitor every job. It is particularly interesting for makers who want to explore surface color without investing in an industrial full-color machine.
Avoid it if you need dependable production output, accurate color matching, durable functional-part surfaces, warranty-backed support, or a turnkey appliance. Owners of Klipper-only printers should not assume compatibility, and “open source” should not be confused with beginner-friendly or complete.
The last independently reported beta-unit price was $199 in a December 28, 2024 Hackaday report. The current official site does not provide a verified current price or stock status, so that figure should not be treated as a current selling price.
