Robin Williams’ former family home at 540 El Camino Del Mar in San Francisco’s Sea Cliff neighborhood sold for a reported $18.1 million on January 23, 2025. It was first listed for $25 million, then marketed at a reduced $20 million before the reported sale.

What was the sale price?

The San Francisco Chronicle reported the $18.1 million closing price and said the sale closed Thursday, January 23, 2025, citing Compass. The house had first been listed for $25 million in October 2023; by late 2024, it was being offered at $20 million. Those figures mark successive asking and sale prices, not equivalent valuations. Where was the house?

The residence is at 540 El Camino Del Mar in Sea Cliff, a coastal San Francisco neighborhood. Reports describe views of the Golden Gate Bridge and the Marin Headlands. The Chronicle reported that the property had previously belonged to Oliver J. Olson, who was associated with a San Francisco shipping and lumber company. San Francisco Chronicle; SFGATE

What is known about the house’s design and construction?

Built in 1926, the Italian Renaissance-style home was designed by Earle B. Bertz, according to SFGATE. The Chronicle describes it as approximately 10,600 square feet across three levels, with six bedrooms. SFGATE describes it as nearly 11,000 square feet; published measurements differ, so approximately 10,600 square feet is the more specific figure in the sale report. San Francisco Chronicle; SFGATE

How did the Williams family change the property?

Robin and Marsha Garces Williams bought the home for $3.2 million in 1991. They renovated it in the early 1990s, reportedly rebuilding from the studs while retaining historic materials. After their divorce in 2010, Marsha retained ownership. She described the house to Mansion Global, as quoted by the Chronicle, as “a beautiful, happy house,” and recalled years of “fun and play and joy” there. Listing agent Steven Mavromihalis told the Chronicle that the renovation preserved rare materials from the original 1926 construction: “They took great pains to preserve the rare and valuable building materials used in 1926, which are simply no longer available in the construction of modern homes.” San Francisco Chronicle; SFGATE

What unusual features were reported?

Accounts of the home describe secret rooms and passageways added for the Williams children, as well as a topiary dinosaur that rose above the property’s walls. SFGATE also describes a concealed room used as a safe room, office or meditation space. These are reported features; the descriptions come from media and listing coverage rather than a current inspection of the property. SFGATE; San Francisco Chronicle
