Road work does not automatically mean a nearby business is closed. A project may keep local driveway access open while diverting through traffic, or it may temporarily change an entrance, parking area, or walking route. Before you leave, check the relevant official 511 service and project page, then confirm the usable entrance and parking directly with the business.
Conditions can change between the morning and your arrival. Treat posted work-zone signs and instructions from traffic controllers as the final authority, even when a navigation app proposes a different route.

Start with the official road information for your location
Use the transportation authority that covers the road you will travel, not a generic traffic page. Regional services differ in the roads and projects they monitor. For example, 511 SF Bay provides a map and alerts for construction, incidents, closures, and conditions in its service area. Ontario 511 lists construction, collisions, road closures, and highway-camera information for Ontario highways. Minnesota projects are covered by Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT) traveler and project information. These services are useful examples, but none should be treated as a universal source for every road or jurisdiction.

- Open the project detail, not just the map pin. Look for closure dates, lane restrictions, detour directions, work hours, and statements about access to adjacent properties.
- Check the page again shortly before departure. A short-term closure or a changed traffic pattern may not match an earlier schedule.
- Save or note the official detour and any road names it uses so you can recognize the signs on the way.
511 information is generally designed for current travel conditions. Ontario 511 describes a free app with construction, collision, closure, camera images, and hands-free drive-mode alerts. Availability and coverage depend on the jurisdiction, so use the equivalent official service where you are traveling.

Ask the business how customers should arrive
A project map can show a closure without explaining which driveway is open. Call or message the business when access is not obvious, and ask for directions that apply to the day and time of your visit.
- Which entrance is currently open to customers?
- Is the main parking lot available, or should visitors use a side or rear entrance?
- Is there a recommended approach from a particular side street?
- Has on-street parking been removed, relocated, or limited to certain hours?
- Is a short-term access change scheduled during your visit?
- Should deliveries, mobility-accessible drop-offs, or larger vehicles use a different entrance?
Wisconsin Department of Transportation business guidance identifies driveway and on-street parking changes as project details businesses should track. MnDOT likewise advises businesses to help customers find the best way to reach them. A business may know about a one-day driveway shift before it appears in a public map.
Understand the difference between a through-traffic detour and local access
A “road closed” or detour message can describe through traffic rather than every property along the road. MnDOT explains that a road under construction can remain available for business access while through traffic is sent elsewhere. That distinction is helpful, but it is not a guarantee for every project.

Signs may direct drivers past the work area to a driveway, or a flagger may allow alternating movements. You still need to follow the signed approach and any instructions from workers. Do not assume that an open driveway at one hour will remain open throughout the day.

When access is actually restricted
A contractor may close a driveway, sidewalk, or block for a short operation such as paving, utility work, concrete placement, or equipment movement. If a sign says local access is closed, do not enter because a map or app shows the destination as nearby. Use the business’s confirmed alternate entrance or wait until the restriction ends.
Why conditions can change quickly
Projects often move through stages. The entrance used last week may be behind barriers today, while a temporary route opens on another side. Check the project schedule and ask the business about same-day changes instead of relying on a previous visit.
Compare routes using evidence, not just travel time
When more than one approach is possible, evaluate each route against the information you can verify.

There is no universal “best” route during construction. A slightly longer signed route may be the only legal way to reach the property, while a shorter route may end at a closed driveway.

Do not let a navigation app override work-zone signs
Navigation apps optimize for their own routing data and may not reflect a newly installed barrier or a temporary access rule. MnDOT states: “Apps often choose the fastest route, not the official detour.” Use the app for orientation, then compare its route with the official project information and the signs you see.
- Enter the destination and inspect the proposed approach, including the final turn into the property.
- Check whether the app sends you through a road named in the official closure or detour notice.
- If the app and the signs disagree, follow the signs and instructions from traffic-control personnel.
- Never drive through cones, barricades, a marked work area, or a lane restricted to authorized traffic because the app shows a shorter path.
- If you need to recheck information, pull over safely or use a hands-free official service before continuing.
An app can also route you to the rear of a building or to an entrance that is not open to customers. Confirm the final approach with the business.
Plan for parking and the last few hundred feet
Reaching the correct block is only part of the trip. Construction can remove curb spaces, narrow a lot entrance, or move customer parking to a temporary area. Ask the business where to turn and where to park, then look for temporary signs when you arrive.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Do not stop in a travel lane, bus stop, loading zone, driveway, or signed no-parking area while deciding what to do.
- Allow room for workers, pedestrians, delivery vehicles, and equipment to move through the access point.
- If the usual lot is closed, use only the alternate lot or street parking the business or local signs identify as legal.
- Check whether a temporary entrance is one-way or limited to a particular vehicle size.
- If you need an accessible parking space or step-free entrance, confirm its location before setting out; a normal route may be blocked even when the business remains open.
Parking rules are set locally. A construction project may change them for a period, but a business cannot authorize parking where signs prohibit it.

Use safer practices when driving through a work zone
Work zones can contain lane shifts, workers close to moving traffic, uneven surfaces, and vehicles entering or leaving the site. Follow the reduced speed and lane instructions posted for that project.
- Keep your phone out of your hand while driving. If you need to check 511 information, call before moving or pull over first.
- Expect a stopped vehicle, worker, or piece of equipment beyond the point where a lane appears open.
- Leave space for vehicles ahead to slow or merge, and do not pass a queue that is waiting for a flagger.
- Use the signed detour even if a side street appears empty; an unsigned shortcut may be closed or unsafe.
- Watch for temporary signals, alternating one-way traffic, and changes in lane markings.
Traffic-control personnel and signs take priority over an app, a previous trip, or an assumption that local access is unchanged.
If you are walking, crossing, or using transit
Construction can interrupt a sidewalk even when cars can still reach the business. Use a designated crosswalk or intersection, and check every lane for turning, passing, or backing vehicles before crossing. Do not step around a barrier into an active lane or equipment path.
Check the pedestrian route
Ask the business whether the usual sidewalk and entrance are open. Follow temporary pedestrian signs and stay within the marked path. If the path ends, use the signed crossing rather than entering the roadway to get around the barrier.

Allow for a relocated stop
Bus stops and pickup points may move during construction. Confirm the current stop with the transit agency or the business, and leave enough flexibility to walk from the temporary stop without crossing outside a designated location.
How much extra time should you allow?
Official guidance recognizes that construction, detours, and live traffic can cause delays, but it does not establish one universal time buffer. The amount depends on the project, time of day, weather, route, and whether parking has moved. Check current conditions and leave enough flexibility for the verified detour and a possible search for the correct entrance.
For an appointment, tell the business that you are traveling through an active work zone and ask whether arrival windows or alternate drop-off arrangements are available. Do not treat a general delay estimate from an app as a promise.
What to do when the route changes after you leave
- Stop making route decisions while moving. Pull over legally or wait until you can safely follow the next sign.
- Read the posted closure or detour instruction and identify the road it directs you toward.
- Contact the business if the signed route no longer matches the entrance you were given.
- Use the official 511 update for the project, if available, rather than trying several unverified shortcuts.
- If no legal or safe access remains, reschedule or ask the business about another location or pickup method.
Never move barriers, enter a restricted lane, or ask workers to let you through a closed section for convenience.
A practical pre-visit checklist
- Identify the transport authority that covers your route.
- Check its 511 map, alerts, and the project page shortly before departure.
- Record the official detour and any closure times.
- Confirm the open entrance, parking area, and recommended approach with the business.
- Compare your app’s final approach with signs and official instructions.
- Plan a legal place to stop if you must check information.
- Use designated pedestrian crossings and keep your phone away while driving.
- Recheck conditions if your visit is later in the day or the project is scheduled to change stages.
Bottom line for visiting a business beside road work
Check official, local travel information and the project page, confirm the entrance and parking with the business, and follow the signed detour and work-zone instructions. A through-traffic detour may leave local business access open, but only the specific project and current conditions can establish that. Navigation apps are useful supplements, not final authorities, and a safe trip may require a different approach, extra flexibility, or a rescheduled visit.
