They are different filters serving different paths. A refrigerator water filter treats water routed to the dispenser and, on models connected to filtered water, the ice maker. A refrigerator air filter treats air inside the fresh-food compartment to help manage odors. Neither replaces the other, and many refrigerators have only a water filter—or no replaceable air filter at all.
Use the refrigerator’s full model number, the label on the installed cartridge, and the owner’s manual to identify what your appliance has and which replacement fits. Water-filter problems usually show up as slow dispensing, reduced ice production, or unusual-tasting water or ice. Air-filter questions usually involve a persistent compartment odor after spoiled or uncovered food has been ruled out.

What is the difference between a refrigerator air filter and a water filter?
The filters sit in separate systems and work on different materials:

| Acts on | Water entering the refrigerator system and, on applicable models, water delivered by the dispenser and ice maker. | Air circulating in the refrigerator compartment. |
| Main purpose | Reduce specified substances and help improve water or ice taste and odor, depending on the exact cartridge and its certified claims. | Help reduce or manage odors inside the refrigerator compartment. |
| Typical warning signs | Slow dispenser flow, lower ice production, unusual water or ice taste, or a replacement indicator. | A persistent compartment odor, provided the model actually uses an air filter and food-related sources have been checked. |
| Typical replacement guidance | Often about six months; some manufacturers also specify a gallon limit or replacement when flow drops or an indicator activates. | The cited LG manual specifies about six months or when its change-filter light turns on. Other models can differ. |
| Compatibility | Match the cartridge to the refrigerator model or the label on the existing filter. | Confirm that the refrigerator has an air-filter holder and match the replacement to that model. |
LG states directly that the water filter and the air filter used to remove odors are different parts (LG USA Support, dated September 7, 2026). An air filter cannot purify the water line, and a water filter cannot remove odors from the refrigerator compartment.

How the two filter paths work
Water-filter path
A water filter is installed in the refrigerator’s incoming-water circuit. Depending on the model, filtered water goes to the door dispenser, the ice maker, or both. The cartridge is designed to reduce only the substances identified for that specific filter; the presence of a filter is not a blanket guarantee that every contaminant is removed or that unsafe source water becomes safe.
When the cartridge becomes restricted, the pressure and flow available to the dispenser or ice maker can fall. Whirlpool describes a clogged or incorrectly installed filter as a possible cause of reduced flow to both outlets (Whirlpool Product Help). Taste and odor can also change, although the same symptoms can come from the household supply, the refrigerator’s tubing, the ice bin, or food odors.
Air-filter path
An air filter, sometimes labeled a “Fresh Air Filter,” is mounted inside the refrigerator compartment. It interacts with the air, not the water supply. Its role is odor management: it may help reduce smells circulating among stored foods, but it cannot remove the source of an odor such as spoiled food, an uncovered container, a dirty gasket, or an ice bin that has absorbed a smell.

Not every refrigerator includes this part. Frigidaire’s odor guidance qualifies its advice by saying to check the air filter only if the unit has one (Frigidaire Taste and Odor Guide). Do not order an air cartridge simply because the refrigerator has a water dispenser.
Which filter should you replace?
Replace or investigate the water filter when water or ice is affected
- The dispenser stream is noticeably slower than before.
- Ice production has fallen, or the ice maker’s fill appears weak.
- Water or ice tastes or smells unusual.
- The refrigerator displays a filter-change message or indicator.
- The cartridge has reached the interval or gallon limit in the appliance manual.
These signs are not proof that the cartridge is the only cause. A shutoff valve that is not fully open, kinked supply tubing, low household pressure, an ice-maker fault, or a recently installed cartridge that was not seated correctly can produce similar symptoms.
Replace or investigate the air filter when a compartment odor remains
- There is a persistent smell in the fresh-food compartment after removing spoiled food.
- Strong-smelling foods were stored uncovered or in loose packaging.
- The model’s air-filter indicator is on or the manual’s replacement interval has arrived.
Ice absorbs odors readily. If the smell is noticeable in ice, inspect the ice bin and discard old ice as directed by the appliance manual; changing an air filter alone will not remove an odor already absorbed by food or ice.

How often should each filter be changed?
Replacement intervals are manufacturer guidance, not a universal rule. Usage, incoming-water quality, household consumption, and the refrigerator’s indicator can shorten or extend the practical interval.

| Guidance | What it says | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| LG water filters | Typically about six months. | LG’s September 7, 2026 support guide says earlier replacement may be needed with heavier use or poorer water quality, or when dispensing slows or the indicator activates. |
| Whirlpool water filters | Every six months, when the indicator appears, or as needed. | Its product-help page lists slow dispensing, odd-tasting water or ice, and low ice production as possible clogged-filter symptoms. |
| GE water filters | Generally every six months or usually 170–200 gallons, depending on model. | GE advises earlier replacement if dispenser or ice-maker flow decreases (GE Appliances). |
| LG air filter in the cited manual | About six months or when the change-filter light turns on. | This interval comes from the MFL69497002 owner’s manual and should not be generalized to every brand or model (manual PDF). |
If the manual and the dashboard indicator disagree, follow the model-specific instructions for resetting and replacement. A calendar reminder is useful, but a sudden flow change or active indicator deserves attention sooner.
How to identify the correct replacement
- Record the full refrigerator model number. Look on the cabinet frame, inside the fresh-food compartment, behind a crisper drawer, or in the owner’s manual. Locations vary.
- Read the existing cartridge label. If removing it is safe and straightforward, record its part number and any orientation markings. LG recommends using the existing label or the refrigerator model number to identify the correct water filter.
- Confirm which filter type the appliance supports. A refrigerator may have a water filter, an air filter, both, or neither. Frigidaire’s guidance specifically limits air-filter advice to units equipped with one.
- Check the exact model’s installation diagram. Filter location, locking mechanism, cap design, and reset procedure differ. A cartridge that fits one model may not seal or lock in another.
- Verify performance claims for water cartridges. Check the exact contaminant-reduction claims and certification information rather than assuming a generic “purifying” label means removal of every contaminant. Whirlpool points readers seeking taste and odor improvement toward NSF Standard 42 information (Whirlpool approved refrigerator water filters).
Retail listings can group many visually similar cartridges together. Treat the model number as the deciding specification, not the photograph, color, or a claim that the cartridge is “universal.”

How to replace a refrigerator water filter safely
The exact latch or twist mechanism is model-specific, so use the appliance manual for the physical steps. The following sequence covers the decisions that matter on most designs:
- Prepare for water. Place a towel or shallow container below the housing if the manual warns of residual water. If the instructions call for closing a valve or switching off an ice maker, do that first.
- Remove the old cartridge. Unlock, twist, or pull it according to the model diagram. Do not force a cartridge that is stuck; forcing it can damage the housing or leave a seal behind.
- Inspect the new filter. Remove shipping caps, verify the part number, and check that the gasket is present and clean. Do not lubricate or alter the seal unless the manufacturer says to.
- Install and lock it fully. Align the arrows or keyed tabs, then push or rotate until the cartridge is seated. An incompletely locked filter can leak or restrict flow.
- Flush the cartridge. LG’s general guide calls for dispensing about 2.5 gallons after replacement; another LG troubleshooting guide describes about 10 liters (2.6 gallons) in its process. These volumes are model guidance, not a universal number, so use the amount in your manual.
- Check for leaks and flow. Dispense water, inspect the housing and tubing, and confirm that the stream is improving. Recheck the installation if flow remains weak.
- Reset the indicator. Follow the model’s button sequence or touch-screen path. Resetting a timer does not prove the cartridge is installed correctly; perform the leak and flow check first.
Flushing removes air and loose carbon fines that can otherwise cause temporary cloudiness, specks, or an unusual taste. Capture the flushed water for a non-drinking use only if your manual permits it; otherwise discard it.
How to replace a refrigerator air filter
- Verify that an air-filter compartment exists. Look for a labeled holder, usually in the fresh-food compartment, and confirm the part number in the manual.
- Remove the old filter without damaging the holder. Some designs slide out; others use a cover or clip. Follow the arrows and do not pry against shelves or liners.
- Install the replacement in the indicated orientation. Airflow arrows or a printed “front” marking must face the direction shown by the appliance.
- Close the cover completely. A loose cover can bypass the media and allow odors to circulate.
- Reset the air-filter light if fitted. Use the manual’s control-panel procedure and record the replacement date.
An air filter is an odor-management component, not a substitute for cleaning. Remove spoiled food, seal strong-smelling items, wipe spills, and inspect the door gasket and ice bin when odors persist.

Troubleshooting: water or ice tastes or smells unusual
Use a process of elimination instead of immediately buying another cartridge.
- Compare with tap water. Pour a glass from the same supply before it enters the refrigerator. If the tap also tastes or smells unusual, the refrigerator filter may not be the source.
- Check the filter date and indicator. Replace an overdue cartridge or one showing a warning, using the correct model-compatible part.
- Flush after replacement. Follow the manual’s volume. LG’s published troubleshooting process refers to dispensing about 10 liters (2.6 gallons), while its replacement guide gives about 2.5 gallons; the appliance-specific instruction controls.
- Inspect the installation. Confirm that the cartridge is fully seated, the housing is dry, and the supply tubing is not kinked.
- Inspect food and the ice bin. Uncovered foods can transfer odors, and old ice can retain them. Seal foods, clean the bin as directed, and make fresh ice if the manual recommends it.
- Check the supply line. A new or recently moved refrigerator can have tubing-related taste or odor. Follow the manufacturer’s cleaning or service guidance rather than improvising chemicals.
LG’s troubleshooting guidance covers these checks—tap-water comparison, filter status, flushing, sealed food, the ice bin, and the supply line (LG USA Support, dated September 3, 2026).
Troubleshooting: the refrigerator has an odor
- Remove the likely source. Check expiration dates, spills, drawers, drip areas, and foods stored without tight lids.
- Check the ice. Ice can absorb odors from uncovered food. Empty and clean the bin according to the manual if the smell is concentrated there.
- Confirm whether the model has an air filter. If it does, check its date, indicator, and seating. If it does not, focus on cleaning and food storage rather than searching for a cartridge.
- Clean contact surfaces. Use only the cleaning method recommended for the refrigerator’s interior materials.
- Escalate persistent odors. If the odor remains after food, ice, cleaning, and the air filter have been addressed, consult the manufacturer or an appliance technician; the source may be a drain, gasket, insulation area, or another component.
What each filter cannot do
- A water filter cannot remove every contaminant. Its performance is limited to the substances and conditions stated for that cartridge. Certification and claims must be checked for the exact part.
- A water filter does not fix every low-flow problem. Closed valves, kinked tubing, low pressure, an ice-maker fault, or incorrect installation can look like a clogged cartridge.
- An air filter does not clean spoiled food or old ice. It can help with circulating odors but cannot eliminate the source.
- An air filter does not treat drinking water. It has no role in the dispenser or ice-maker water path.
- Neither filter replaces routine sanitation. Clean the ice bin, shelves, seals, and spill areas as the appliance manual directs.
A practical maintenance checklist
- Write down the refrigerator model number and keep the manual accessible.
- Record the installation date for every cartridge.
- Check the water-filter indicator and watch for a sudden flow change.
- Use the model’s gallon limit when one is specified; GE cites about 170–200 gallons for some models, not all.
- Flush a new water cartridge by the volume specified for the model.
- Check for leaks after changing a water filter.
- Keep strong-smelling foods sealed and inspect old ice when odors appear.
- Replace an air filter only when the refrigerator is designed to use one.
- Do not assume a cartridge is compatible because it looks similar or is advertised as universal.
Bottom line for choosing between the two
Choose a water filter when the issue concerns water or ice quality, dispenser flow, ice production, or a water-filter indicator. Choose an air filter only when your refrigerator has one and the problem is a persistent compartment odor after food and ice sources have been checked. Identify the appliance by its full model number, follow its replacement and flushing instructions, and treat certification claims as specific to the exact cartridge rather than as a promise of universal purification.
