A road construction detour sign means the normal route is temporarily redirected around a work area. Slow down, read the complete message and arrows, and follow the sequence of temporary route and destination signs until you rejoin the regular road. The exact turns, distance and closure dates are project-specific, so confirm local information with the responsible transportation agency.
What a construction detour sign means
A detour is a temporary rerouting over another roadway or route because a traffic-control zone blocks, restricts or makes the usual path unsuitable. In the Federal Highway Administration’s Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD), 2023 11th Edition, the DETOUR warning sign is designated W20-2. It is intended to appear in advance of the point where road users must leave the normal route.

The sign does not, by itself, describe every turn. It alerts you that a different path is coming. The route is then established by a series of temporary guide signs, directional arrows and destination signs. The MUTCD states: “Each detour shall be adequately marked with standard temporary route signs and destination signs.” That requirement applies to the traffic-control plan prepared by the road authority; layouts differ between projects.

Detour is temporary, not a new permanent route
FHWA’s official interpretation describes detour signing as “for rerouting traffic around a temporary traffic control zone.” Signs are removed when the activity that required the detour has concluded. A closure caused by a recurring incident or another ongoing condition may use standard permanent guide-sign forms instead of temporary construction-detour signing. The distinction concerns how agencies sign a route; it does not tell you when a particular project will finish.

How the signs work together
ROAD (STREET) WORK warning sign
The ROAD (STREET) WORK sign is a general advance warning that an obstruction or restriction is ahead. The MUTCD says it should be located before the work space or any detour on the road where the work is taking place. Seeing it means you should expect changing lanes, narrowed roadway, stopped traffic or a route decision farther ahead; it is not necessarily the sign that tells you which turn to take.
DETOUR (W20-2) warning sign
W20-2 identifies an approaching road-user detour over a different roadway or route. Its distance legend may show a measured distance or use the word “AHEAD.” Treat the legend as advance notice and continue looking for the first route-marking sign. If the sign is accompanied by a lane or direction instruction, make that movement only when it is safe and permitted by the signs and roadway markings.
Temporary route and destination signs
Guide signs in the detour sequence direct you through each decision point. M4-8P and the M4-9 series are among the detour guide signs identified in the MUTCD; an arrow can be used where a route has been established. Destination wording helps you confirm that you are still heading toward the road, town or facility you need. Read the destination, route number and arrow together rather than following an arrow without checking its associated text.

How to read detour colors, words and arrows
Orange indicates temporary traffic-control signing
Additional temporary guide signs in a temporary traffic-control zone use a black legend and border on an orange background under the MUTCD provisions. Temporary directional or street-name signs used for a detour may use that orange treatment. Orange is therefore a useful indication that a message relates to road work, but it is not a complete route instruction. The wording, route number, destination and arrow determine where you should go.
Green signs can still belong to a detour
Permanent directional and street-name signs used with detour signing may retain a white legend on a green background. A green sign is not proof that the route is unaffected or permanent. Check whether it names the destination shown on the temporary signs and whether a temporary plaque or arrow changes the movement.
Arrows show the movement at that decision point
A detour arrow applies to the intersection, ramp or roadway entrance where it is posted. Do not assume that an arrow points to the final destination or remains valid after the next turn. At each subsequent sign, verify the next movement. If an arrow appears to conflict with a lane marking, barricade or an officer’s direction, reduce speed and follow the active traffic-control direction; do not make a sudden maneuver to preserve the route you expected.

What to do when you encounter a detour
- Reduce speed and scan ahead. Work zones can contain workers, equipment, narrow lanes and short sight distances. Leave enough space to stop before a queue or barricade.
- Read the first warning completely. Note whether it says ROAD WORK, DETOUR, a distance or “AHEAD.” This tells you how soon a route decision may occur.
- Identify your destination. Keep the destination, route number or street name you need in mind. A detour may use several roads, so the next sign may not resemble the name of the road that was closed.
- Follow each temporary route sign in sequence. Use the posted arrow at every turn and continue looking for the next sign after making the movement. Do not substitute a remembered shortcut through the work area.
- Confirm the route after intersections. If signs give a destination, check that it matches your intended direction. A route can temporarily share a road with other traffic before splitting again.
- Rejoin the normal route only when signs indicate it. The end of a work zone or a familiar roadway does not necessarily mean the detour has ended. Continue until the route returns you to the signed destination or regular road.
- Pull over safely if you lose the sequence. Do not stop in a live lane or reverse toward a missed turn. Use a legal, safe stopping location and consult current agency information or a map before proceeding.
What to do when signs are missing or appear to conflict
A missing sign does not make the closed road safe to enter
Construction layouts can change as crews move barriers and phases. If the roadway ahead is barricaded, closed or occupied by workers, do not enter simply because you did not see the expected detour plaque. Continue only where the active traffic-control arrangement directs you, and seek a safe alternate route outside the work area.

Conflicting temporary signs
When two signs seem inconsistent, slow down and compare their locations, destinations and arrows. A sign farther back may announce the detour while a later sign governs the immediate turn. Follow the direction given at the current decision point, and yield to a police officer, flagger or other authorized traffic controller when present. Local law and agency procedures govern unusual conflicts; the federal manual is not a location-specific driving rulebook.
Obscured, damaged or knocked-down signs
Do not rely on color or on what another vehicle does if a sign is unreadable. Avoid the work space, keep your movement predictable and report the condition to the responsible state, county or municipal transportation agency. Provide the road name, nearest intersection and direction of travel so the agency can locate the problem.

Temporary signs versus permanent signs
| Sign category | Purpose | What a driver should infer |
|---|---|---|
| Advance warning | Alerts road users that work, an obstruction or a detour is ahead. | Prepare to slow, scan and make a route decision; it may not show the turn. |
| Temporary route sign | Marks the path through the traffic-control zone. | Follow its arrow, route number or street name and look for the next sign. |
| Temporary destination sign | Confirms where the marked detour leads. | Use the destination to check that you remain on the intended route. |
| Permanent directional or street-name sign used with a detour | Provides established roadway information while temporary signing supplements it. | Do not assume green styling means the construction restriction is over. |
| Bicycle or pedestrian detour sign | Marks a separate path for people walking or bicycling. | Do not transfer a bicycle or pedestrian route to a motor-vehicle route, or vice versa. |
The MUTCD lists separate bicycle and pedestrian detour signs. Their presence means the traffic-control plan may provide a different path for those users; drivers should not use those symbols as instructions for a vehicle movement.

Sign dimensions are engineering specifications, not a measure of how serious a closure is. In the 2023 MUTCD table, the M4-9 DETOUR guide sign is listed as 30 × 24 inches for conventional roads and 48 × 36 inches for freeways or expressways. A larger freeway sign does not mean the detour is longer, and a smaller conventional-road sign does not mean the route is optional.

|---|---|
| Conventional roads | 30 × 24 inches |
| Freeways or expressways | 48 × 36 inches |
Placement, spacing and the number of signs depend on the project’s traffic-control plan, roadway design and jurisdiction. The federal manual sets national provisions, but a state or local agency may adopt it with supplements or other requirements.

Planning for a known construction closure
Check the responsible agency’s current notice
For a named project, consult the state department of transportation, county road department or city transportation agency responsible for the road. Look for the current closure limits, phase, expected dates, vehicle restrictions and any special access information. Dates and routes can change when weather, utility work or construction sequencing changes.
Allow time for the decision points
Do not wait until the last intersection to search for an alternate route. A detour may add distance, place you on a lower-speed road or pass through intersections with different turning arrangements. Leave enough time to read signs without rushing or stopping in traffic.
Use navigation as a supplement, not the authority
A map or navigation device may still show the pre-construction road or suggest a turn that is closed. Treat the physical traffic-control signs, barricades and directions from authorized personnel as the current on-site information. If the device conflicts with the signed detour, follow the work-zone arrangement and update your route only from a safe location.

- Following the first arrow indefinitely: arrows apply to the decision point where they are posted, not every later intersection.
- Choosing a route by color alone: orange signals temporary work-zone signing, while green may still appear on permanent signs used with the detour.
- Turning around at the barricade: a sudden U-turn or reverse movement can create a hazard. Continue to a safe place or follow the signed alternative.
- Assuming a familiar road is open: construction phases can close a road that was open earlier in the day.
- Ignoring destination wording: a route can be correctly signed yet take you toward a different branch if you do not check the destination.
- Expecting every project to look identical: the MUTCD requires adequate marking but does not require every detour to use the same number of signs, wording or intersection layout.
What the federal guidance does—and does not—tell you
The 2023 MUTCD 11th Edition provides the sign forms, colors and traffic-control principles used to mark temporary detours. It does not establish the exact route, project schedule, access arrangements or every local driving rule for a particular closure. Adoption status and supplements vary by jurisdiction. For a current, location-specific answer, use the transportation agency responsible for that road and follow the signs installed at the site.
The practical rule for drivers
Expect the DETOUR warning to precede the actual route change. Once the detour begins, read every temporary route and destination sign, match each arrow to the movement at hand, and continue until the signed route returns you to your destination or the regular roadway. Treat the work-zone arrangement—not a remembered road, a map’s old data or sign color alone—as the controlling information.
