Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsTake the route with the shortest reliable whole-trip time—not automatically the road marked “detour” or the shortcut suggested by an app. Before leaving, check your state or regional 511/DOT service for the work zone, closures, incidents and current travel times. Compare the delay remaining on the signed route with the alternate’s full-trip estimate, then confirm that the alternate is open, safe and suitable for your vehicle.
Posted work-zone signs and current official notices are the operating instructions. Navigation apps provide estimates that can be stale or miss weather, restrictions and newly closed roads. If an unfamiliar route conflicts with current official information, verify it before turning off the signed path.

The short answer: compare reliable time, not the visible queue
A construction detour can look slow because traffic is concentrated at one merge, while an alternate route can look fast because its map line avoids the work zone. Neither appearance tells you which trip will finish sooner. “Faster” means the expected time from your actual starting point to your destination, including the remaining delay, extra distance, signals, merges and any bottleneck beyond the construction site.
The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) review State of the Practice for Traveler Information During Nonrecurring Events, published in April 2018, found that travelers want both the expected delay on the current route and the travel time on an alternative. It is a literature review, not a current nationwide test of detours, so use its factors as a decision framework rather than as a promise that one option will win. Read the report at FHWA’s traveler-information publication.

There is no universally valid rule such as “divert whenever the queue is ten minutes” or “always trust the signed detour.” The better choice depends on departure time, local traffic, the quality and age of the information, weather, road restrictions, your familiarity with the area and the vehicle you are driving.
What to compare before you turn
| Decision factor | Signed construction detour or current route | Alternate route |
|---|---|---|
| Expected whole-trip time | Normal travel time plus the current reported work-zone delay and downstream congestion | Estimated time from your origin to destination, including added distance, intersections and any alternate-route delay |
| Reliability | Usually supported by current work-zone signs and agency information; queues can grow quickly | May be uncertain if conditions are not reported, if the road is unfamiliar or if a bottleneck is farther ahead |
| Availability | Follow only the lanes and turns that remain open and are shown by signs | Confirm that every road is open and that no temporary closure, event, gate or local restriction blocks the route |
| Suitability | Check lane width, surface, weather exposure and the vehicle’s clearance or weight limits | Check road class, bridge limits, grades, services, fuel and parking; commercial drivers need additional planning |
| Safety | Expect merging traffic, reduced speed and workers; obey the posted work-zone pattern | Do not trade a known, signed route for an unverified road simply to avoid a queue |
An alternate is worthwhile only when its likely time saving is large enough to justify its uncertainty and added complexity. FHWA’s review identifies expected savings, viable alternatives, congestion, route familiarity, perceived safety and easy access to traveler information as relevant influences; it does not establish a single diversion threshold.
A step-by-step decision process
1. Check conditions before departure
- Identify the construction project, closure or incident affecting your trip.
- Open the official 511 or transportation-department service for the state or region in which you will travel. Look for a map, incident list, road-condition report, construction notice and travel-time estimate.
- Check the planned departure time, because a report made earlier can be obsolete when you reach the site.
- Note restrictions that matter to your vehicle: lane closures, bridge weight or clearance limits, seasonal roads, chain requirements, flooding, fire activity or unpaved sections.
Services differ by jurisdiction. For example, Florida’s FL511 mobile service describes a Drive Mode that lists up to three routes with drive times and provides construction, closure and detour information for covered Florida roads. Those features describe that service, not every 511 system. See Florida 511’s mobile-app information, and use the equivalent official service where you are traveling.

2. Establish the current route’s real cost
Start with the route you would take if you followed the signs. Record its estimated travel time and the reported delay. If the service gives only a delay, add it to the normal time for the remaining trip. Include a likely queue beyond the visible work zone when the official notice or traffic map shows one. Do not count only the minutes spent beside cones; the relevant value is the time until arrival.
Ask whether the delay is stable or still building. A queue that is moving steadily may be more predictable than a short-looking line that repeatedly stops at a lane reduction. A crash, signal failure or blocked ramp can make an otherwise familiar route much less reliable.
3. Measure the alternate from the same starting point
Compare the alternate’s full-trip estimate with the current route’s full-trip estimate. Use the same destination, departure time and vehicle assumptions. Check the added miles, number of turns, traffic signals, likely merges and the point at which the alternate rejoins the main road. An alternate that bypasses the first queue but rejoins just before a second bottleneck may save little or no time.
If an app shows several options, treat each time as an estimate, not a guarantee. Look for independent confirmation in the official road or incident information. When the alternate has no current status, classify its travel time as uncertain rather than assuming the map has a clear road.

4. Verify that the alternate is viable
- Open: Confirm every segment is open, including bridges, ramps and local roads that may not appear in a statewide summary.
- Legal: Check one-way rules, access restrictions, seasonal closures, toll or permit requirements and vehicle-specific limits.
- Suitable: Consider road width, surface, grades, curves, lighting, shoulders and weather exposure.
- Serviced: For a long trip, consider fuel, rest areas, food, communications coverage and, for commercial vehicles, truck parking.
- Familiar enough: If you do not know the area and conditions are changing, an unfamiliar road carries more uncertainty than its displayed minutes suggest.
For trucks, buses, trailers and other large vehicles, a short route can be unusable because of a low bridge, weight limit, turning radius, steep grade or restricted commercial access. FHWA’s review specifically notes vehicle-related considerations such as fuel, truck parking and bridge clearances or weight limits.
5. Follow the work-zone operation on the ground
Once you reach the project, obey the current signs, flaggers, lane markings and barrier layout. A signed detour is designed around the closure as it exists at that time; cones and portable signs can change during the day. Do not cross a closed lane, move a barrier or follow a route that a worker or police officer has blocked, even if a navigation display still shows it as available.
If signs and an app disagree, pause at a safe location and verify the road status. The app may not have received the latest closure, while the sign is the instruction for traffic in front of you.
6. Recheck only when stopped safely
Conditions can change after you leave. If you need a new route, use a voice service or pull completely off the roadway before handling a phone. Bay Area 511’s FAQ states: “If you need to check traffic conditions while driving, call 511 and use voice commands or pull over to check your phone.” Read the agency guidance at 511.org’s FAQ.
How official 511 and DOT information improves the choice
Official traveler-information systems can report construction, closures, incidents, detours, road conditions and travel times. Their coverage, update frequency and features vary by state and region, so verify what the service actually covers before relying on it. A county road, private access road or newly imposed restriction may not appear in a statewide feed.
Use the agency source to answer three questions that a generic map may not answer clearly:
- Is the route open now? Look for a closure end point, lane status or incident clearance rather than assuming a line on a map means passable pavement.
- What caused the delay? A planned lane closure has different reliability from a crash, weather event or emergency response.
- What does the agency expect? A published travel time or delay estimate is useful when its timestamp and coverage are clear; an old estimate should be treated cautiously.
Check before departure whenever possible. Oregon Department of Transportation guidance warns that phone or in-vehicle navigation may not contain the latest road or weather information. In its winter and fire-season context, the agency says: “Be aware that the app on your phone or in your GPS device might not have the latest information — don’t follow it blindly!” The same page advises: “If you are not familiar with an area and current road conditions, stay on state roads and don’t attempt alternate routes.” Read the full guidance at Oregon DOT’s GPS navigation tips.

When the signed detour is usually the better choice
The alternate has no verified status
If the alternate’s road condition, closure status or bridge limits are unknown, its displayed time omits the largest risk. A known delay on a signed route is often preferable to an unverified road, especially at night or during severe weather.
The project is actively managing traffic
Work-zone crews may meter vehicles, change lane patterns or coordinate signals. A map may not reflect those temporary controls. Follow the operational pattern in front of you rather than leaving solely because the queue looks dramatic.
You are carrying a restricted vehicle or load
Large vehicles, trailers and loads with height, width or weight limits need a route checked against official restrictions. The apparent shortcut can end at a bridge or turn that cannot accommodate the vehicle.
The alternate saves little time
A small theoretical saving can disappear through extra turns, unfamiliar intersections, a missed signal or a second queue. If the time difference is slight and the signed route is open and predictable, staying put may reduce risk and workload.
When an alternate route can make sense
The delay is confirmed and substantially longer
An alternate becomes more attractive when official information shows a sustained closure or a queue that will remain for much of your travel window, while the alternate has a current, credible time estimate and no reported blockage.

Construction information alone is not enough in winter storms, wildfire conditions, flooding, heavy rain or high winds. Weather can change road capacity, visibility and traction faster than a routing service updates. Check the transportation agency’s road-condition notices and emergency advisories, not only a congestion color on a map.

Oregon DOT’s warning about staying on state roads when you are unfamiliar with an area is particularly relevant in winter and fire season. An apparently empty local road may be unplowed, flooded, smoky, narrow or closed to through traffic. If conditions are uncertain, choose the route whose surface, access and status are verified, even if its estimated time is longer.
Commercial-driver and fleet considerations
For a passenger car, time and safety may dominate the decision. For a truck, bus or service vehicle, the route must also support the operation:
- Clearance and weight: confirm bridge height, posted weight, axle limits and width restrictions for the entire alternate.
- Fuel: identify usable fueling locations and account for consumption on grades, stop-and-go traffic and cold weather.
- Parking and breaks: check whether legal truck parking or a safe stopping place exists if the route extends the trip.
- Predictability: a slightly longer route with dependable access can be better for delivery windows than a shorter route with uncertain closures.
- Dispatch communication: document the closure, selected route and any restriction so the next driver receives the same current information.
Do not let a passenger-car route recommendation override a commercial vehicle’s legal or operational requirements.

What the available evidence can—and cannot—tell you
The FHWA publication is a synthesis of earlier studies about traveler information and route choice. It does not provide a live comparison for your origin and destination, a national percentage showing how often apps beat signed detours or a universal number of minutes that justifies diversion. Preferences described in older studies can also change as information tools evolve.
The report mentions a traveler-information survey conducted at Department of Motor Vehicles locations and online with 287 respondents. That is a sample-size detail from that survey, not a population estimate or a current statistic about drivers generally.
Likewise, Florida 511 and Bay Area 511 document the capabilities of their own services, not nationwide coverage. For trips outside those jurisdictions, use the relevant local agency and confirm which roads and data feeds it includes.
A one-minute departure checklist
- What is the current whole-trip estimate on the signed route, including reported delay?
- What is the alternate’s whole-trip estimate from the same origin and departure time?
- Is every alternate segment confirmed open?
- Does the alternate avoid the full cause of delay and any downstream bottleneck?
- Are weather, road surface, visibility and familiarity acceptable?
- Are vehicle dimensions, weight, access, fuel and parking requirements satisfied?
- Which source is newest: the agency notice, the roadside sign or the app?
- Can the decision be made without handling a phone while driving?
Bottom line
Choose the route with the best combination of current whole-trip time, reliability, legal access and safety. Check official 511/DOT information before departure, compare the reported delay with the alternate’s complete travel time, and reject any route that is closed, unsuitable or unverified. Once you are in the work zone, posted directions govern; if conditions change, recheck only through voice service or while safely stopped.
