Choose shoji when you want visual screening and softly diffused daylight; choose glass when you want clear sightlines and a smooth surface that can be wiped quickly. That rule changes with the infill and the partition system. A translucent acrylic or laminated washi sheet behaves differently from an open lattice, just as clear glass behaves differently from frosted, patterned, or washi-style laminated glass. Compare the specified materials, frame, seals and track—not the labels “shoji” and “glass” alone.
What you are actually comparing
A shoji screen is a framed panel divided by a lattice and filled with a light-transmitting material. Traditional versions use washi paper, while contemporary products documented by manufacturers also use laminated Warlon sheet, acrylic, polycarbonate and glass. The panel may slide, fold, hang from an overhead track, remain fixed or stand independently.

A glass partition is a glazed panel in a framing and door system. Clear glass preserves direct views. Frosted, misted, patterned or diffusivity-oriented glass reduces those views, and laminated glass can add a different balance of safety, appearance and maintenance. The performance of the complete assembly depends on glazing thickness and construction, frame, gaskets, joints and installation.

Privacy: translucency, sightlines and lighting determine the result
Translucent shoji
Shoji Screens & Doors describes translucent acrylic as providing privacy while allowing softened light through. A closed panel can obscure a person’s features and details while still revealing movement or a strong silhouette, depending on the sheet, distance and lighting. Washi, laminated paper and other translucent sheets produce different degrees of diffusion.
Privacy is not guaranteed merely because a panel is called shoji. An open lattice or an unfilled decorative screen leaves direct views through its openings. Even a translucent infill can look more revealing when the brighter room is behind it or when someone stands close to the panel.
Clear and privacy glass
Clear glass maintains sightlines in both directions. That is useful for borrowed light, supervision and a larger visual connection, but it is not visual privacy. Frosted, misted, patterned or deliberately diffusing glass can interrupt detail while retaining daylight. Nakajima Glass describes a washi-style laminated glass range with both a high-transparency type and a high-diffusivity type, allowing the appearance and privacy balance to be selected rather than assumed.

Ask the installer for a sample of the specified infill, not a generic photograph. View it from each side with the room lights off and on, during daylight and after dark. Check the most important sightlines—seated eye level, standing eye level and the approach from a corridor. The reviewed sources do not establish a universal privacy score or a directly comparable test between shoji and glass, so a sample inspection is more reliable than a category promise.
Light: soft diffusion versus transparent daylight
How shoji changes light
YKK AP describes washi as diffusing light through a room into a soft, distributed effect. That can reduce glare and make an opening feel luminous without creating a sharp view to the other side. The exact effect changes with the paper or resin sheet, its color and texture, the depth of the lattice and the direction of the incoming light.

A modern resin-coated washi-style sheet can preserve a paper-like appearance while tolerating more everyday contact than untreated paper. It should still be evaluated in the intended opening: a small sample may appear brighter or darker than a full-height panel because the surrounding walls and floor change the perceived contrast.
How glass changes light
Clear glass emphasizes direct transmission and preserves the visual connection between spaces. Frosted or patterned glass scatters light and reduces detail. Nakajima Glass’s high-transparency and high-diffusivity options illustrate why “glass” alone does not predict the result.

Cleaning and maintenance
Traditional paper and modern shoji sheets
Untreated paper can tear, stain or require replacement after impact or moisture exposure. That does not describe every contemporary shoji. One Australian maker says it uses polycarbonate Japan Rice or translucent acrylic rather than rice paper. Shoji Designs describes Warlon as Japanese washi laminated on both sides with plastic resin and says the material is washable. WARLON states that its PVC-laminated plate can be wiped with a damp cloth.
Use the cleaning method supplied for the selected sheet. Avoid treating an unspecified paper, acrylic and resin-laminated panel as interchangeable. A replacement shoji paper or sheet must match the frame’s retaining method, thickness and dimensions; compatibility should be confirmed before ordering.

Tracks, frames and moving parts
A sliding screen adds maintenance beyond its infill. Shoji Designs advises keeping wooden tracks clean and applying paste wax occasionally. Grit in a floor or overhead track can increase rolling resistance and damage wheels. Floor guides and thresholds also collect dust, particularly at entrances.

Bifold and top-hung systems introduce hinges, carriers or rollers that need inspection. Ask the supplier which components are replaceable and which cleaning products are permitted.
Glass surfaces and laminated glass
Glass provides a smooth surface suited to routine wiping. Nakajima Glass positions its washi-style laminated glass as easy to clean and less prone to dirt than shoji and fusuma; that is a product description, not a universal life-cycle comparison. Frames, seals, door rails and corners still need cleaning, and textured or deeply patterned surfaces can hold more residue than flat clear glass.
For any glass partition, follow the system manufacturer’s instructions for detergents, squeegees and edge protection. Keep abrasive pads and tools away from coated, patterned or laminated surfaces unless the supplier approves them.
Durability, safety and moisture
Shoji material choices
WARLON describes its interior PVC-laminated plate as durable, hard to break and flame resistant. KITOTE describes acrylic as hard to break while noting that it is more scratch-prone than glass. These are claims for named products; they are not a rating for every acrylic, polycarbonate or laminated sheet.

Traditional paper remains vulnerable to puncture and moisture. Confirm whether the selected material is suitable for the room. Shoji Screens & Doors provides wet-area caveats, so a bathroom, utility room or space exposed to condensation should not be specified from a dry-room example without written confirmation.
Glass construction
Glass performance depends on whether the product is monolithic, laminated, tempered or part of a proprietary system. Nakajima’s washi-style product is laminated glass, but that construction should not be generalized to all decorative glass. Request the product data and safety documentation for the exact glazing, edge treatment and frame.
For either option, the opening, adjacent walls and floor must be checked for movement, impact exposure and required clearances. A material that is suitable as a small fixed insert may not be suitable as a full-height moving door.
Acoustics: do not infer soundproofing from appearance
A typical shoji screen is not an acoustic wall. Shoji Screens & Doors states: “They are not soundproof and should not be treated as sealed acoustic or odour-control walls, but they can reduce or muffle sound between rooms.” Gaps at the floor, head and sides, along with lightweight infill, allow sound to pass.

Glass can perform better acoustically when it is part of a tested, sealed partition, but “glass partition” is not an acoustic rating. Frame seals, joints, doors, glazing build-up and installation all matter. ITOKI’s 2019 ADRED release reports laboratory transmission loss at 500 Hz of 41.1 dB for its double-glazing specification and 45.9 dB for its soundproof double-glazed option. ITOKI says, “The values are measured in a testing laboratory and are not guaranteed values at the site.” Those figures apply only to that named system and test condition, not to glass partitions generally.

If speech privacy or equipment noise matters, request the installed-system rating, test method, frequency range and field-installation assumptions. A supplier who can provide only a glass thickness or a “double glazed” label has not provided enough information to predict room-to-room performance.

Choose how the opening will operate
Shoji Screens & Doors documents fixed, sliding, top-hung and bifold formats. KITOTE offers made-to-order sizing and multiple infills. A freestanding screen avoids permanent tracks but can move or require stabilizing feet; a fixed panel preserves a clean opening but cannot be swept aside; a sliding or bifold arrangement needs parking space and hardware clearances.
- Measure the structural opening. Record width at several points, finished floor height, head height, wall plumb and any skirting or trim that affects the panel.
- Select the operating pattern. Decide whether the panel slides, folds, hangs overhead, remains fixed or stands free. The choice determines track length, stacking space, guides and door clearances.
- Confirm floor and head conditions. Shoji Screens & Doors notes that floor-track needs vary with the opening and configuration; Shoji Designs documents overhead roller tracking as one option. Check whether the floor can accept a recessed or surface track and whether the head can carry the hardware.
- Specify the infill in writing. Name traditional washi, laminated Warlon, acrylic, polycarbonate, clear glass or a particular privacy glass, together with thickness, color and surface.
- Review a full-size or representative sample. Test views, glare, shadows and color in the actual room before fabrication.
- Coordinate adjacent work. Protect clearances for handles, skirting, switches, ventilation and furniture. A partition that technically fits may still be awkward to operate if furniture blocks its travel.

Which option fits common project goals?
You need visual separation but want daylight
Start with a translucent shoji infill or a diffusivity-oriented glass sample. Shoji will usually create the softer, more screen-like effect; diffusing glass may offer a smoother wipeable face. Decide whether silhouettes and movement are acceptable before choosing.

You want the room to feel open
Clear glass is the direct choice because it preserves sightlines. A shoji lattice with clear or open sections can also connect spaces, but it is no longer a privacy screen in those areas.
The opening is handled frequently
Favor a material and hardware package that tolerates repeated contact. Laminated resin sheets and acrylic avoid the fragility associated with untreated paper, while glass provides a hard, smooth face but still requires edge and impact protection. Compare handles, rollers, guides and replacement parts as part of the system.
Cleaning time is the main concern
A flat glass face is straightforward to wipe, while shoji maintenance depends on whether the infill is paper, washable laminate, acrylic or polycarbonate and whether tracks are exposed. A washable laminated shoji can be practical, but its lattice and track add more surfaces than a plain glazed panel.
Speech privacy or noise control is critical
Do not select a conventional shoji for sound isolation. Specify a tested, sealed partition and obtain field-relevant acoustic documentation. Treat the ITOKI ADRED figures as a named laboratory example, not a generic glass benchmark.

A specification checklist for the supplier
- What exact infill is proposed: traditional washi, laminated Warlon, acrylic, polycarbonate, clear glass or a named privacy glass?
- What are the panel dimensions, thickness, color, texture and edge details?
- How will the panel operate, and where will it park when open?
- Is the track recessed, surface-mounted or overhead, and who maintains its rollers or guides?
- Which cleaning products and methods are approved for the infill, frame and track?
- What moisture, impact and fire limitations apply to this product in the intended room?
- For glass, what glazing construction and complete partition system are specified?
- For acoustics, what laboratory or field rating applies to the installed assembly, at which frequencies and under what test conditions?
- Can the supplier provide a sample and replacement-infill information compatible with the final frame?
Bottom-line decision
Shoji is generally the stronger choice for a framed, movable screen that filters views and turns daylight into a soft glow. Glass is generally the stronger choice for transparency and a smooth surface that can be wiped. Modern laminated shoji sheets narrow the durability and cleaning gap, while frosted, patterned and washi-style laminated glass narrow the privacy and visual-softness gap. Make the final decision from the named infill, operating hardware and tested complete system; the category name alone cannot predict privacy, maintenance or acoustics.
