To align a table-saw rip fence, first verify that the blade is parallel to the miter slot using the saw’s manual. With power disconnected, lock the fence and compare its position at the front and rear using the same marked blade tooth or the verified miter slot; the target is parallel, with equal readings unless the exact manual specifies otherwise. If the fence will not lock securely or shifts when locked, stop using the saw and consult the manual or an authorized service provider.

Fence alignment is both a cut-quality check and a safety check. A fence that changes position or allows stock to bind can contribute to kickback, but alignment alone cannot prevent it. Safe ripping also depends on functioning guarding, suitable stock, proper support, and controlled feeding.

Why alignment matters

Kickback happens when the blade catches or binds the workpiece and throws it toward the operator. OSHA notes that kickback is more likely during ripping than crosscutting. A correctly aligned, securely locked fence is one part of a safe setup, not a guarantee against kickback.

The reference chain is blade to miter slot, then fence to that established reference. A fence scale is useful for setting a rip width, but it does not prove that the fence is parallel. Set the scale pointer only after the fence geometry is correct.

Check and adjust the fence safely

  1. Find the exact saw model and manual. Fence locks, adjustment hardware, blade settings, and safety-component procedures vary. Follow the procedure for your model rather than loosening arbitrary fasteners.
  2. Turn off and isolate power. Disconnect the saw from its power source before measuring or adjusting.
  3. Inspect the saw. Check that the blade is clean, sound, properly tightened, and suitable for the cut. Inspect the guard, riving knife or splitter, anti-kickback assembly, fence faces, rails, and locking action.
  4. Verify blade-to-miter-slot alignment first. Use the manual’s method. If the blade is not aligned to the slot, correct that relationship as directed before adjusting the fence.
  5. Set the blade as the manual specifies. Blade height and measurement procedures can differ by model; do not assume one setting applies to every saw.
  6. Compare the fence at the front and rear. Lock it near the blade. If measuring from the blade, mark one tooth and use that same tooth for both readings. The readings should be equal unless the exact saw manual says otherwise. Alternatively, with blade-to-slot alignment verified, check the fence face against the miter slot.
  7. Adjust only the designated hardware. Use the model-specific procedure. Different manufacturers use different adjustments, and an incorrect adjustment can interfere with the fence’s locking or self-aligning action.
  8. Lock and recheck. Confirm the fence stays parallel after locking and locks securely. Repeat at several fence positions as a prudent check of consistency.
  9. Restore and check safety equipment. Reinstall and function-check the guard, riving knife or splitter, and anti-kickback equipment before a compatible through-rip.

Manufacturer instructions illustrate why the exact manual matters: Bosch, Makita, and SawStop use different procedures and hardware. Their procedures share the same basic logic—establish the blade-to-slot relationship, check the fence against a reliable reference, adjust only as specified, and verify the lock.

Measurement accuracy and alignment gauges

The general target is parallelism, or equal front-and-rear readings, unless the manual for the exact saw specifies otherwise. A basic straightedge or measuring method can reveal gross misalignment; use the method and tolerance in your manual when finer accuracy matters. Do not apply a precision tolerance for one saw model to every table saw.

A Line It Deluxe Table Saw Alignment Calibration Tool
  • MACHINE PRECISION & ACCURACY - Aligning workshop machinery can be frustrating. A tape measure and a firm fist bump often aren't sufficient. For optimal performance, consider the A-LINE-IT DELUXE Machinery and Tool Alignment System with Digital Indicator. Achieve precise results without overspending—because your machinery deserves the best care!
  • TABLE SAW DIAL INDICATOR - One of the most common machines that need to be aligned and maintained is our table saws. As we use them, the fence and saw blade amongst other parts tend to slightly shift over time. With the A-LINE-IT DELUXE, easily identify saw blade straightness, fence run-out, arbor run-out and flange run-out.
  • SELF-ADJUSTING “SMART BAR” - One of the reasons you’ll appreciate this system is the self-adjusting “Smart Bar” that will stay tight in a miter slot that isn’t the same size along it’s slot length. You only need to adjust the spring plungers once, and after that, its a perfect fit in the miter slot. This makes the measuring process much more efficient.
  • VERSATILITY - It's not just a table saw gauge. The A-Line-It Basic can be configured to do various tests in your shop. You can also check saw arbor run out, saw blade run out, rip fence alignment, rip fence straightness, jointer depth of cut, planer alignment, drill press squaring, arbor flange and drill press chuck run out.
  • EVERYTHING YOU NEED - Everything you need to thoroughly check your machines in one package. The spring and nut assembly makes the A-LINE-IT DELUXE the only tool in the US that will allow you to determine whether the run-out in the saw blade is caused by the blade, the arbor, or a combination of both. Being able to determine this is vitally important to achieve the best running table saw possible.

A dedicated dial-indicator alignment gauge can make repeatable checks easier. Rockler describes its gauge as accurate to 0.001 inch, a product specification rather than a universal requirement for saw alignment. Check the gauge’s compatibility before buying: Rockler specifies a 3/8 x 3/4 inch miter slot and a 3-3/4 to 7-3/4 inch slot-to-blade range for its example. Other saws may require different fit and reach.

Check or tool What it can tell you Important limitation
Manual-approved straightedge or basic measuring method Can reveal gross misalignment and support a basic check. Use the exact saw’s prescribed method; fine differences may be hard to measure.
Same-tooth front-and-rear measurement Compares the fence-to-blade relationship using one marked tooth. Power must be isolated; follow the saw manual’s setup and measurement instructions.
Miter-slot-mounted dial-indicator gauge Supports repeatable fine measurement of blade or fence parallelism. Confirm the gauge fits the miter slot and reaches the blade on your saw.

Symptoms to investigate

Symptom Possible interpretation Safe next step
Front and rear fence readings differ The fence may need adjustment, or blade-to-slot alignment may not have been established. Isolate power, verify blade-to-slot alignment, then use the model-specific fence procedure.
Fence aligns before locking but shifts when locked The clamp or lock adjustment may be affecting alignment. Follow the manual’s lock-adjustment procedure and recheck; do not force the clamp.
Fence will not lock or becomes loose This may be a safety defect, not merely a precision issue. Stop using the saw and consult the manual, an authorized service path, and applicable recall information.
Burning, scoring, or binding remains after checking the fence Blade condition, stock condition, safety setup, feed, support, or saw geometry may also be involved. Inspect the complete setup and consult the manufacturer’s troubleshooting guidance.

Pre-rip safety checklist

  • Keep the guard, riving knife or splitter, and anti-kickback equipment installed and functional for compatible through-rips.
  • Use a push stick for narrow material and keep hands out of the cut line.
  • Support the workpiece and offcut as needed so they remain controlled through the cut.
  • Stand to the side rather than directly behind the blade.
  • Do not make freehand cuts.
  • Do not use the rip fence and miter gauge together as a crosscut setup or length stop; use the miter gauge for crosscutting.
  • Stop if the fence does not lock securely or any required safety component is defective.

OSHA workplace requirements apply to covered workplaces, not automatically to every home workshop or jurisdiction. OSHA guidance and standards emphasize guarding and safe machine operation; homeowners should still follow the saw manual and use the same practical safeguards.

When to stop and get service

Stop using the saw if its fence cannot lock securely, shifts after locking, or a guard, riving knife, splitter, or anti-kickback component is not functional. Check the exact model’s manual and use an authorized service route where appropriate. A fence that loosens in use can create a kickback hazard; do not treat repeated tightening or continued operation as a safe workaround.

If a checked fence appears aligned but a cut burns, scores, or binds, do not assume the fence is the only cause. Inspect the blade, stock, safety equipment, feed, and support, and follow the manufacturer’s troubleshooting guidance.

FAQ

Should a rip fence be parallel to the blade?

Use the exact saw manual’s procedure. The general target is a parallel fence and equal front-and-rear readings, after verifying the blade is parallel to the miter slot. Do not assume a universal toe-out allowance.

Can I use the fence scale to check alignment?

No. The scale helps set a rip width, but it does not verify that the fence is parallel. Check the fence geometrically against the blade or, after verifying blade-to-slot alignment, against the miter slot.

Why should I measure from the same blade tooth?

Marking one tooth and using it for both front and rear readings follows the manufacturer’s measurement method and avoids comparing different teeth. This helps keep tooth-to-tooth variation from being mistaken for alignment error.

What should I do if the fence shifts when locked?

Stop and follow the model-specific manual procedure for checking or adjusting the fence lock. If it cannot remain secure, do not use the saw until the issue is correctly serviced.

Can a correctly aligned fence prevent kickback?

No. Alignment is only one control. Use functional guarding and anti-kickback equipment, suitable stock, proper support, a push stick when needed, and safe positioning and feed technique.

What if the saw still burns or binds after alignment?

Check the blade, stock, riving knife or splitter, feed, and support as well as the fence. If the cause is unclear, use the manufacturer’s troubleshooting or service guidance rather than continuing to make cuts.
