Ring Devices Offline: Troubleshooting the Frustration

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A Ring device marked Offline has usually lost communication with your Wi‑Fi network or Ring’s cloud service. It does not automatically mean the camera or doorbell has failed. Start by determining whether one device or the whole system is affected, then check power, open Device Health, reconnect Wi‑Fi, and restart the modem and router.

Do not begin with a factory reset or a subscription purchase. A subscription can provide recording and other features, but it cannot restore power or repair a lost Wi‑Fi connection.

Quick fix: follow these steps in order

  1. Check whether other Ring devices and household devices are online.
  2. Check the affected device’s battery, wiring, outlet, transformer, or power adapter.
  3. In the Ring app, open the device’s Device Health page.
  4. Under Network, choose Reconnect or Change Network.
  5. Unplug the modem and router for at least 30 seconds, then restart them.
  6. Test a compatible 2.4 GHz network or temporary alternate network.
  7. Check Wi‑Fi coverage, mesh placement, multiple-router setups, and access controls.
  8. Use Reboot this device if available.
  9. Factory-reset the Ring device only after the earlier checks fail.

First determine what is actually offline

Symptom Likely area First check
One Ring device is offline Power, battery, local Wi‑Fi, or that device Battery or power source, then RSSI
Several Ring devices are offline Router, ISP, changed credentials, or household power Whether phones and computers have internet
Every internet device is offline Modem, router, ISP, or power Modem status lights and service
Ring appears offline but still sends alerts Temporary app or cloud-status problem Device Health, Ring.com, and another authorized device
Doorbell has no lights and does not respond Battery, wiring, transformer, or hardware Charge the battery or check the power source

Ring identifies offline devices through the app, the Device Health screen, or push, text, and email notifications. An offline status can make Live View, alerts, and event recording unavailable, but missing recorded video can also result from disabled motion detection or an expired trial or plan.

1. Check power before troubleshooting Wi‑Fi

Battery-powered doorbells and cameras

  • Remove and fully charge the Quick Release Battery.
  • Reinsert it until it clicks firmly into place.
  • If the device has multiple battery slots, test each slot separately.
  • Try another known-good compatible battery if available.

A displayed battery percentage is useful evidence, not proof that the battery can sustain camera operation under load. A failing battery may show charge but shut down when the camera or Live View starts.

For battery-powered doorbells, temporarily remove a metallic faceplate and test the original plastic faceplate if available. Ring lists metallic faceplates as a possible contributor to unresponsive behavior on some models.

Hardwired doorbells and cameras

Check the breaker, outlet, loose wiring, cable, power adapter, and transformer. Confirm the transformer or power source meets the requirements in the installation guide for your exact Ring model. Do not apply a generic voltage recommendation to every Ring product.

If the problem began after a storm, electrical work, or a power interruption, investigate the electrical supply before changing router settings.

Ring Alarm Base Station

Confirm that the Base Station has power. During troubleshooting, connect it directly to the router with Ethernet when possible. If its wireless connection is unstable, place it elevated, central, and in an open location.

Avoid casually factory-resetting an Alarm Base Station. Re-registering the system can require sensors to be paired again.

2. Reconnect the device from Device Health

On the current U.S. Ring support path, open the dashboard, tap the ••• menu on the affected device, choose Device Settings, then Device Health. Under Network, select Reconnect or Change Network. Follow the setup prompts.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Some products or app versions use a different route: tap the ☰ menu, choose Devices, select the device, and open Device Health. Labels can vary by product, region, and app version, so look for Device Health rather than relying on one universal menu path. Ring’s current guidance is available at Ring’s offline-device support page.

Record the Wi‑Fi name, network status, and RSSI value shown there before changing anything. That information will help Ring or your internet provider diagnose the problem.

3. Restart the modem and router correctly

  1. Unplug the modem and Wi‑Fi router.
  2. Wait at least 30 seconds.
  3. Power on the modem first and wait for it to synchronize with the ISP.
  4. Power on the router.
  5. Wait until Wi‑Fi and internet access return.
  6. Check whether the Ring device reconnects automatically.
  7. If it does not, return to Device Health and choose Reconnect.

This is a reboot, not a reset. Restarting normally does not erase router settings. A router factory reset can erase configuration, while changing the Wi‑Fi name or password forces connected devices to be configured again.

4. Check Wi‑Fi band, signal, and placement

Ring says all Ring products support 2.4 GHz Wi‑Fi, while some models also support 5 GHz. Check the requirements for your exact model. For a distant outdoor doorbell or camera, 2.4 GHz is usually the better first test because it generally travels farther and passes through walls more effectively. 5 GHz can be faster and less congested, but its range is usually shorter.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If your router allows it, temporarily connect the Ring device to a dedicated 2.4 GHz network. Do not assume that a phone showing strong Wi‑Fi beside the router represents the signal at the Ring’s mounting location.

When shown in Device Health, RSSI is a useful warning indicator. Ring describes an RSSI of -80 or worse as very poor and associated with intermittent service or offline behavior. That is Ring’s guidance, not a universal Wi‑Fi standard. Congestion, packet loss, roaming, interference, and power instability can still cause problems even when RSSI looks acceptable.

Move the device or network equipment away from metal, dense enclosures, large appliances, and the extreme edge of coverage. A Chime Pro can extend coverage for Ring devices, but it must itself receive a healthy connection from the router. It cannot fix an ISP outage, incorrect credentials, failing power, or a poorly configured network.

5. Look for router and mesh configuration problems

Multiple routers and double NAT

More than one device operating as a router can create connection problems. Common examples include an ISP gateway plus a second router, an old router left active after a replacement, or a mesh system connected behind a gateway without the correct bridge or access-point configuration.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Prefer one primary router. If appropriate, put the ISP gateway into bridge mode or configure the secondary system according to the manufacturer’s access-point or mesh instructions. Do not enable bridge mode blindly: it can affect IPTV, telephone service, parental controls, port forwarding, and other household devices.

Security and access controls

Check MAC filtering, access-control lists, client isolation, parental controls, scheduled Wi‑Fi pauses, and guest-network restrictions. Ring’s general guidance references firewall troubleshooting, but disabling a firewall should be a temporary diagnostic step only, with the setting restored afterward. Avoid arbitrary port forwarding unless current, model-specific Ring instructions require it.

Guest networks

A guest network can be useful for testing, but some guest networks isolate clients or block local discovery. Treat it as a diagnostic option, not automatically the best permanent configuration.

6. Test the Ring device on another network

When the device repeatedly disconnects, try a compatible guest network, 2.4 GHz network, or phone hotspot if the model and setup process allow it. A hotspot may use cellular data and may not reproduce normal home-network behavior.

  • Works on the alternate network: the home router, signal, credentials, band steering, firewall, mesh topology, or ISP is more suspect.
  • Fails on multiple known-good networks: investigate power, setup state, account or app issues, and possible hardware failure.

This test makes the home network more likely to be the immediate cause; it does not conclusively prove that the Ring hardware is good.

7. Reboot before factory-resetting

For supported devices, Device Health may include Reboot this device. Use it when the device has power but appears stuck or unresponsive.

Reserve a factory reset for cases where reconnection fails, the device cannot find or join the Ring setup network, or Ring support instructs you to reset it. A reset can erase Wi‑Fi credentials and setup state. You will need to set the device up again, and motion zones, linked services, settings, and automations may require review. Resetting an Alarm Base Station can also lead to sensor re-pairing.

Reset procedures differ by model. Identify the exact product and generation before pressing a reset button, and do not repeatedly reset an Alarm system without understanding the consequences.

Product-specific checks

Video doorbells

Check battery seating, transformer compatibility on wired models, faceplate interference, and access to the setup or reset button. A doorbell that cannot enter setup mode after a known-good power check deserves Ring support or warranty review.

Security, Spotlight, and Floodlight Cameras

For wired cameras, check the outlet, cable, adapter, breaker, mounting location, weather exposure, and heat. Do not apply battery troubleshooting to wired Floodlight or Spotlight models. If the camera is online but Live View fails, investigate bandwidth, app state, and temporary cloud communication rather than assuming the camera has no power.

Chime and Chime Pro

A Chime can be offline while the doorbell remains online. That may stop audible in-home notifications without taking the doorbell itself offline. Check the Chime’s Device Health and reposition it where it has a strong connection to the router.

Chime Pro is a Ring-focused Wi‑Fi extender with dual-band support. Ring distinguishes it from a whole-home mesh system such as eero. Chime Pro is more suitable for a localized Ring dead zone; mesh Wi‑Fi is more appropriate when several household devices have poor coverage.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Ring Alarm and Z-Wave devices

For an Alarm Base Station, separate power, Ethernet, primary internet, and cellular-backup issues. For a Z-Wave sensor, check its battery, distance, obstructions, and mesh path.

For Ring Alarm, the relevant route is generally Devices > Alarm > Device Settings > Network Settings. Alarm Pro users may be directed to the eero app because Alarm Pro includes an eero-managed network. Ring’s Alarm guidance is available in its Alarm and Z-Wave troubleshooting instructions.

App, account, and subscription checks

  • Force-close and reopen the Ring app.
  • Update the app through your device’s official app store.
  • Confirm the phone itself has internet access.
  • Try Ring.com or another authorized device to distinguish an app problem from a device problem.
  • Confirm your shared-user permissions or account ownership.
  • Check whether only historical recordings are missing because a trial or subscription ended.

Ring subscriptions are not required for every basic function, but recorded video and advanced features depend on the applicable plan, product, and country. Ring’s current U.S. plans page uses the Ring Protect name; older material may refer to Ring Home because of the 2026 naming transition. Current prices and features can change, so verify them directly on Ring’s plans page. A plan does not repair a disconnected or unpowered device.

When to contact your ISP, router maker, or Ring

Contact your ISP or router manufacturer when:

  • Other household devices also lose internet access.
  • The modem cannot establish service.
  • The Ring works on a hotspot but not your home network.
  • You recently changed the SSID, password, router, or mesh system.
  • You are unsure about bridge mode, firewall settings, or access controls.

Contact Ring when:

  • The device has a known-good power source but never powers on.
  • It cannot enter setup mode.
  • It fails on multiple known-good networks.
  • It repeatedly disconnects despite stable internet and strong signal.
  • An Alarm Base Station needs re-registration or sensors need re-pairing.
  • You suspect hardware damage or the device may be covered by warranty or a protection plan.

Before contacting support, collect the product name and generation, error code, Device Health screenshot, RSSI, battery or power state, router model, time the problem began, recent network or electrical changes, whether other devices work, and whether the Ring works on another network. Ring provides chat and phone support through its official Help center.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Restarting the router without checking whether the Ring has power.
  • Factory-resetting before recording settings or identifying the model.
  • Assuming every Ring product supports 5 GHz.
  • Buying an extender when the actual problem is double NAT, a changed password, or an ISP outage.
  • Placing a Chime Pro in a location where its own upstream signal is weak.
  • Treating RSSI as the only measure of connection quality.
  • Leaving router security disabled after testing.
  • Assuming a subscription restores connectivity.
  • Confusing an offline Chime with an offline doorbell.
  • Resetting an Alarm Base Station without planning for sensor re-pairing.
  • Declaring a Ring-wide outage without checking current official information.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does a Ring device need a subscription to work?

No. Basic functions may work without a plan, but recorded video and advanced features depend on the applicable product, plan, and country. A subscription does not fix Wi‑Fi or power problems.

Will restarting my router delete Ring settings?

A normal power-cycle reboot should not erase router or Ring settings. A router factory reset is different and can erase your network configuration.

Should I buy a Chime Pro?

Only after diagnosing a localized Ring Wi‑Fi dead zone. Chime Pro may help one or two devices but will not fix an ISP outage, bad power, incorrect credentials, or a multi-router configuration.

When is a Ring device probably defective?

Hardware becomes more likely when the device has known-good power, fails on multiple known-good networks, cannot enter setup mode, or repeatedly disconnects despite strong signal and stable internet.
