To hold two large workpieces at a right angle while you glue or screw them together, use a shop-made plywood triangle with notches for clamp jaws. A round cutout can also help you temporarily secure the brace with a spring clamp while you position bar clamps. This is a woodworking jig, not a structural brace for construction or scaffolding.
What the plywood brace does
The triangle acts as a positioning aid at a corner during carcase assembly. Its two notches accept clamp jaws, and the circular cutout gives a spring clamp a place to hold the brace temporarily during setup. WOOD Magazine describes the jig for joining large workpieces and also reports using it to hold an on-edge picture frame rigidly to a bench while sanding its edges. WOOD Magazine’s right-angle brace article was updated December 19, 2024.
How to use it during glue-up or fastening
- Position the plywood triangle against the corner so it bears against both workpieces.
- If useful, place a spring clamp through the round cutout to keep the brace in position while you set up the other clamps.
- Seat the bar-clamp jaws in the brace’s notches and tighten the clamps to hold the pieces as you join them.
The source describes these features and uses but does not specify a clamp model, tightening force, or exact jig dimensions. Do not assume the brace guarantees perfect squareness: check the assembly with an appropriate square before the joint sets or fastening is complete.
When to use a square or temporary bracing instead
A plywood brace is a reusable positioning aid with notches for clamp jaws. For a cabinet case, a framing square can instead be clamped into a corner as a reference for squareness. Woodcraft’s bookcase example also describes temporary diagonal bracing across the front edges to help keep a case square while it is assembled. These approaches serve related purposes; the cited examples do not establish that one is more accurate or performs better than another. Because those details are not stated, treat the jig as a shop-made aid and size it to your work and clamps rather than relying on an assumed specification. Its use here is for woodworking assembly and bench tasks, not for carrying structural loads.
