Richard Gere and his wife, Alejandra Silva, sold their New Canaan, Connecticut, estate for $10.75 million in October 2024, months after Gere announced plans to move the family to Madrid. The sale price was about $50,000 below their reported 2022 purchase price, before transaction costs. They did move to Spain, but El País reported in November 2025 that they had returned to the United States after about a year in Madrid.
What happened to the New Canaan estate?
The property at 82 Brookwood Lane changed hands in October 2024 for $10.75 million, according to CT Insider’s report based on town property records. Gere and Silva had bought it from musician Paul Simon and Edie Brickell in 2022 for a reported $10.8 million. Realtor.com described the transaction as off-market, rather than a public listing.

The roughly $50,000 difference between the reported purchase and sale prices is not a complete measure of the couple’s gain or loss: it excludes transaction costs and any other expenses or changes in the property’s value.

The estate covered about 32 acres, according to Architectural Digest; Realtor.com described it as 31 acres. The main house dates to 1938, and the property also included a separate guest cottage. Its setting combined formal outdoor spaces with natural features: Architectural Digest describes terraced patios, gardens, woodland trails, a natural pond, a waterfall, and a pool.

Published reports give different room counts, so they should not be treated as one settled figure. CT Insider, citing listing information, reported six bedrooms and 11 bathrooms for the estate. Architectural Digest described a five-bedroom, nine-bath main house and a three-bedroom, two-bath cottage. Those descriptions use different building-level breakdowns and do not align exactly.
Why did Gere say the family was moving to Madrid?
In an April 2024 interview with Vanity Fair Spain, as quoted by Architectural Digest, Gere described the move as a new experience: “For me, going to Madrid is going to be a great adventure because I have never lived full-time outside the United States.” He also said Silva, who is Spanish, had spent years living in his world and that he wanted her to be closer to her family, friends, and culture.

Gere put the personal reasoning this way: “She was very generous in giving me six years living in my world, so I think it is only fair that I give her at least another six living in hers.” The explanation reported at the time was family- and relationship-centered.

Yes. Realtor.com reported in December 2024 that the family had moved to Madrid. But that was not the latest reported chapter: El País reported on November 13, 2025, that Gere and Silva had returned to the United States after roughly a year in Spain. The report, based on an interview Silva gave to ¡Hola!, described the return as a considered family decision and said she left open the possibility of returning to Spain. The available reporting does not establish where they live in 2026.
