The 7 Best Smokers of 2026, Tested and Reviewed by Leading Grill Publications

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The best smoker for you depends on how much fire management you want to do, how much food you cook, and whether you also need a grill. This 2026 shortlist covers the formats shoppers will actually encounter: charcoal drums, bullet charcoal smokers, offsets, pellet grills, gravity-fed charcoal, and indoor electric units.

No single publication established this exact seven-product lineup, and this article does not claim firsthand testing by Bettesworth Construction. Instead, each selection is identified and qualified according to the 2026 evaluations published by Men’s Journal, Popular Mechanics, T3, and other cited sources.

How to choose a smoker

Decide how involved you want to be

Traditional charcoal and offset smokers reward active fire management. You adjust vents, add fuel, and learn how weather affects the cook. Pellet smokers automate the fire with a hopper, auger, fire pot, and digital controller. Gravity-fed charcoal sits between those approaches: it burns charcoal but meters heat electronically. Indoor electric smokers remove the outdoor fire altogether, although they provide a different cooking experience and may have less space or smoke intensity.

Match capacity and versatility to your cooking

Check grate area and rack layout against the food you normally cook, not just the exterior dimensions. A compact vertical unit can hold several racks of ribs while using little floor space; a wide offset or pellet grill is more useful when you want to smoke and grill at the same time. Look for a sear or griddle surface if burgers and steaks matter as much as brisket.

The seven best smokers for 2026

1. Oklahoma Joe’s Bronco Drum Smoker & Grill — best all-around charcoal drum

Men’s Journal named the Bronco its 2026 overall pick. Its evaluation describes heavy-gauge steel, gaskets around the lid and fuel door, and accessible fuel management. The drum format concentrates heat efficiently and has a relatively small footprint, while the grill function adds flexibility for direct cooking.

Best for: cooks who want authentic charcoal flavor and a manageable, versatile cooker.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Trade-offs: temperature control remains a manual skill, and the steel body needs dry storage or a fitted cover to limit corrosion.

2. Weber Smokey Mountain — best budget charcoal smoker

Men’s Journal selected the Weber Smokey Mountain as its 2026 budget pick. The bullet-style vertical layout is a proven low-and-slow format: multiple levels use a modest footprint, and charcoal with wood chunks supplies the smoke. Confirm the exact diameter and current version, because Weber sells different sizes and configurations.

  • Turn up the heat with the Flame Broiler Lever which allows for direct flame searing up to 1,000°F
  • 5 lb. hopper capacity
  • The solid bottom shelf adds additional storage space for tools, pellets, and accessories

Best for: first-time buyers who want a dedicated charcoal smoker at a lower entry cost.

Trade-offs: it is not a full-size grill replacement, and you must manage vents, fuel, and weather-driven temperature changes yourself.

3. Yoder Loaded Wichita — best traditional offset

Men’s Journal lists the Loaded Wichita among its category picks. This offset design separates the firebox from the cooking chamber, making it the choice for readers who specifically want a live-fire pit experience and the ability to work with splits of hardwood.

Best for: experienced pitmasters who enjoy tending a fire and cooking large quantities in a broad chamber.

Trade-offs: offsets demand the most attention to fire placement, airflow, and fuel quality. They are heavy, take more space, and are less convenient for unattended overnight cooks.

4. Pit Boss Navigator 1600M Pellet Grill and Smoker — best large pellet option

Popular Mechanics named the Pit Boss Navigator 1600M its 2026 overall pick. Its pellet format is aimed at cooks who want substantial capacity and digitally managed low-and-slow cooking rather than manual charcoal tending.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Best for: households or gatherings that need a roomy cooker with automated temperature management.

Trade-offs: it requires electricity and a reliable supply of compatible pellets. Pellet grills also contain motors, sensors, and an auger, so they have more electronic and mechanical parts than a basic charcoal smoker.

5. Traeger Ironwood 885 — best established pellet platform

Popular Mechanics selected the Ironwood 885 as its 2026 pellet pick. Traeger explains that an auger moves hardwood pellets from the hopper to a fire pot, where they are ignited by a hot rod. That automatic feed is the reason pellet smokers are convenient, but it also means the grill depends on power, dry pellets, and a functioning feed system.

Best for: cooks who prioritize push-button temperature control, monitoring features, and a large pellet-grill cooking area.

Z GRILLS 2026 Electric Pellet Smoker & Grill, 700 sq. in Cooking Space, PID 3.0 Precision Control, Dual Meat Probes, 28-Hour Hopper, Dual-Wall Insulated Base, 8-in-1 BBQ with Cover
  • Precision Cooking with Z-Ultra PID 3.0 – The upgraded PID 3.0 system automatically manages pellet feed and airflow to maintain stable temperatures between 180°F and 450°F, giving you consistent results every cook
  • Superior Heat Retention – Dual-wall insulated base locks in heat, boosting pellet efficiency and keeping your dishes hot longer, even in chilly weather
  • Hassle-Free Smoking Experience – Monitor your meat with two built-in probes and the large LCD screen. Set the temperature and let the grill handle the rest, so you can enjoy stress-free cooking
  • Versatile 8-in-1 BBQ Functionality – Smoke, sear, roast, bake, and more with this all-in-one pellet grill. A full hopper supports up to 28 hours of continuous cooking, perfect for slow-smoking or fast, high-heat grilling
  • Generous Cooking Area & Easy Pellet Access – 697 sq. in. of grill space fits dozens of burgers, multiple racks of ribs, or several whole chickens. The hopper cleanout system lets you quickly remove or swap pellets with a simple twist, making flavor changes effortless

Trade-offs: pellet fuel and electrical components add operating dependencies; check the current regional specification and support terms before purchase. Traeger’s comparison page is Canada/English localized, so its currency and market assumptions should not be transferred to a US buying decision.

6. Masterbuilt Gravity Series 800 Digital Charcoal Griddle, Grill, and Smoker — best charcoal automation

Popular Mechanics named the Gravity Series 800 its 2026 charcoal pick. A gravity-fed charcoal hopper supplies a digitally controlled fire, giving you charcoal flavor with less vent-tending than a conventional drum or bullet smoker. The griddle, grill, and smoker functions make it one of the more versatile formats in this lineup.

Best for: cooks who want charcoal flavor and broad cooking modes with electronic temperature control.

Trade-offs: the controller, fan, and power supply require care, and the hopper and ash path add cleaning tasks. T3’s separate 2026 overall selection was the smaller Gravity Series 560, not the 800; do not treat the two model names as interchangeable.

7. GE Profile Smart Indoor Smoker — best for indoor, year-round use

Men’s Journal includes the GE Profile Smart Indoor among its 2026 category picks. It is the outlier here: an electric appliance designed for indoor use, useful where an outdoor smoker is impractical or prohibited. Smart controls can make scheduling and monitoring more convenient than managing a live fire.

Best Value
Pit Boss 440 Mahogany Series Wood Pellet Grill & Smoker with Flame Broiler and LED Digital Controller, 518-Sq. In. Cooking Space, 180°F to 500°F Temperature Range, 5 lb. Pellet Hopper, Brown
  • Pit Boss Mahogany Series 440 Wood Pellet Grill and Smoker
  • 518 square inches of cooking surface
  • Porcelain-coated steel cooking grates
  • Dial-in digital control board with LED readout
  • Pellet cooking temperature range of 180° To 500°F

Best for: apartment, balcony-restricted, or all-weather cooks who need an indoor appliance.

Trade-offs: confirm ventilation, electrical, clearance, and local safety requirements before installation. Indoor capacity and smoke character differ from an outdoor offset, drum, or pellet grill, so it is not a like-for-like replacement for a backyard pit.

What “tested” means in these recommendations

The testing claims belong to the publications that made them. Popular Mechanics says its authors Tony Carrick and David Dritsas have “tested dozens of grills and smokers of all different shapes and sizes over the years”; they also compared specifications and consulted user reviews. Men’s Journal labels its 2026 guide “Tested and Reviewed” and says it tested a range of options, although the inspected material does not set out one standardized protocol for every named model. WIRED says its team has tested grills for more than a decade in activities including searing, smoking, grilling, and baking across varied weather. Those statements describe the respective publications’ work, not testing performed for this article.

Accessories that solve common problems

  • Wireless meat thermometer: useful when the smoker’s built-in probes are limited or you want independent readings.
  • Temperature controller: can add monitoring or airflow control to some charcoal cookers; verify compatibility before buying.
  • Correct fuel: use pellets approved for your pellet model and keep them dry. Pellet size and quality affect feed reliability.
  • Fitted outdoor cover: protects an outdoor cooker from weather, but match the cover to the exact model and allow the unit to cool before covering.

Which smoker should you buy?

Choose the Bronco for a compact, hands-on charcoal cooker; the Smokey Mountain for lower-cost vertical smoking; the Loaded Wichita for a traditional offset experience; the Navigator 1600M or Ironwood 885 for automated pellet cooking; the Gravity 800 for digitally managed charcoal and griddle versatility; and the GE Profile Smart Indoor when outdoor cooking is not practical. Before ordering, confirm the current model name, size, price, parts support, and whether your available space, power supply, ventilation, and local rules suit the format.
