The 11 Most Popular Flowers, According to Florists

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Florists interviewed by Martha Stewart named these 11 flowers as blooms customers want in arrangements: baby’s breath, carnations, hydrangeas, lilacs, lisianthus, peonies, ranunculus, roses, stock, sunflowers, and tulips. It is an interview-based selection, not a statistically ranked or nationally representative sales survey. Which one suits you depends on the season, local availability, budget, vase life, and the look or occasion you have in mind.

What florists say are popular flowers

The list below reflects florists’ observations, not a ranking from most to least popular. The source’s accessible text does not establish a publication date, so treat its seasonal and market observations as examples rather than a current availability calendar.

Baby’s breath (Gypsophila)

Florists describe baby’s breath moving beyond its traditional supporting role into a featured flower. Examples include bridal bouquets, wedding arches, and large installations suspended from event-hall ceilings.

Carnations

Carnations are enjoying renewed interest, helped by their affordability and range of old-world colors. A florist technique called reflexing involves gently folding back the petals to give a bloom a fuller appearance.

Peonies

Florists report strong customer interest in peonies. Suppliers may offer them for much of the year, but one florist says in-season flowers look better and cost less. Coral Charm is one variety highlighted by the source.

Tulips

Tulips are loved across regions and can be arranged with greenery or other flowers, or displayed on their own. One florist suggests three stems in a simple cylinder vase. Parrot and fringed cultivars sell well at one shop, while the source cautions that tulips do not have a long vase life.

How to choose flowers for your arrangement

There is no single best flower for every bouquet or room. Use these practical comparisons to narrow the choice:

  • Season and local availability: Ask what is in season nearby and whether the florist can source enough stems for your event. Lilacs are a clear example of a short local season; peonies may be available beyond their peak, but a florist cited better appearance and lower cost in season.
  • Price: Carnations are specifically noted for affordability. For other blooms, ask for a quote rather than assuming a fixed price: season and local supply can change what is available and what it costs.
  • Vase life: The source gives limited examples, not a tested longevity ranking: lisianthus is described as lasting up to two weeks, ranunculus up to a week, and tulips as not having a long vase life. Actual results vary by stem, variety, and care.
  • Color and visual role: Choose full hydrangea heads for volume, sunflowers as a focal point, or baby’s breath as either a featured flower or an accent. Carnations, stock, and ranunculus offer varied color choices.
  • Occasion: The florist examples connect baby’s breath and ranunculus with weddings, roses with recital bouquets, and sunflowers with get-well arrangements. These are possibilities, not rules.
  • Standalone or mixed display: Tulips can be displayed alone or combined with other flowers. Hydrangeas may need little added greenery, while spray roses and stock are described as useful in mixed arrangements.

Florist preferences for locally sourced flowers also depend on practical supply. In a Utah State University Extension survey of Intermountain West florists, 92% of respondents preferred peonies for local sourcing, 88% dahlias, 85% ranunculus, and 80% lisianthus. These figures describe regional florist sourcing preferences—not consumer purchase shares. In the same regional survey, 80% cited delivery capabilities as a barrier, 59% limited inventory or supply, and 50% a lack of needed varieties. Read the Utah State University Extension report.

What sales figures can—and cannot—tell you

National consumer popularity is not established for this exact list. A different measure offers historical context: USDA data reported by GrowerTalks show that, among separately identified classes of U.S. domestically produced cut flowers in 2022, tulips accounted for 19.9% of sales revenue, roses 4.1%, peonies 3.9%, and sunflowers 2.7%. These percentages are shares of domestic production sales, not shares of all flowers bought in the United States. GrowerTalks estimates at least 80% of cut flowers used in the United States are imported, so the domestic-production figures should not be read as a complete consumer-market ranking. See the GrowerTalks report on the USDA data.

Ask your florist these questions

  • Which of these flowers are in season and available locally right now?
  • What will the arrangement cost at the size and stem count I need?
  • Which choices suit the occasion, color palette, and whether I want a standalone or mixed display?
  • How long should I expect these particular stems to last, and what care do you recommend?

As Sam Bowles, general manager at Allen’s Flowers & Plants in San Diego, puts it: “People have very strong memories associated with flowers.” That personal connection can matter as much as a flower’s color, price, or place on a florist’s list.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
