Richard Clarkson Studio’s Floating Cloud was a magnetically levitating ambient lamp designed to hover above a reflective base and change its lighting in response to nearby sound. New Atlas reported the design in 2017 as a limited-run object—not an ordinary weather device or a conventional mass-market lamp. Its specifications and price below are historical reporting, not confirmation that it is currently sold.
How the Floating Cloud works
The cloud-shaped light was described as levitating 2.75 inches (70 mm) above an oval reflective base. An embedded microphone picked up room sound, including music or voices, and the light responded in one of four lighting styles. New Atlas also reported a remote control and a removable cable, with battery operation when unplugged. These are specifications reported in 2017, not independently tested here. New Atlas’s August 7, 2017 report describes the product.
What it was made of—and why it had no speaker
New Atlas reported that the cloud’s outer material was hypoallergenic polyester fiber and that it housed a rechargeable 6,600 mAh lithium-ion battery. Unlike an earlier levitating cloud called Making Weather, the Floating Cloud omitted a Bluetooth speaker. The report said the speaker’s weight limited levitation height and battery life, so removing it was intended to improve both.
How it fits into the studio’s cloud designs
The Floating Cloud followed Richard Clarkson Studio’s earlier artificial-cloud work, including an interactive hanging cloud and Making Weather, its levitating predecessor with a Bluetooth speaker. The Floating Cloud retained the levitating, sound-responsive light concept while dropping the speaker. It is best understood as an ambient design object, rather than a lamp intended primarily for practical room illumination.
