Josephine Garis Cochran designed a practical dishwasher to protect her fine china and avoid hand-washing it. She filed her first patent application in 1885; U.S. patent no. 355,139 was granted in 1886. The popular claim that she “hated washing dishes” is a lively shorthand: the USPTO account emphasizes her concern about chipped dishes and the work of washing them, not a verbatim declaration of hatred.
Why Cochran wanted a machine
Cochran was a socialite who hosted elaborate dinners and used heirloom dishes. According to the USPTO’s account, she worried that servants chipped the china while washing it. Her problem was practical as well as personal: delicate dishes needed cleaning without the risks and labor of scrubbing them by hand.
The USPTO attributes this determination to her: “If nobody else is going to invent a dishwashing machine, I’ll do it myself.”
How Cochran’s dishwasher worked
Cochran’s design held dishes in fitted racks or cages and washed them with water pressure rather than scrubbers. The National Inventors Hall of Fame describes compartments for plates, cups, and saucers arranged inside a rotating wheel in a boiler. A motor turned the wheel and pumped hot, soapy water over the dishes.

The racks kept dishes in place while the water did the cleaning—an important practical feature for fragile china. Earlier dishwashing devices existed, so Cochran’s contribution is best understood as a workable, commercially manufactured design, not the first attempt to mechanize dishwashing.
From patent to business
Cochran filed her first patent application on New Year’s Eve in 1885 under the name J.G. Cochran. The USPTO records the grant of U.S. patent no. 355,139 for a “Dish Washing Machine” in 1886. The application and grant are separate milestones; the dates should not be collapsed into a single year.

She did more than devise the machine. The National Inventors Hall of Fame says she established the Garis-Cochran Dish-Washing Co., initially targeting hotels and large restaurants. Larger machines also went to hospitals and colleges. Cochran oversaw installations and developed improvements, taking part in the work of manufacturing and selling her invention.
What happened at the 1893 Chicago exposition
Cochran’s machine was shown at Chicago’s 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition. The USPTO says nine additional machines were used in exposition restaurants. The National Park Service reports that the large machine could wash and dry 240 dishes in two minutes. That is a historical reported capacity, not a modern performance test.

Why it did not immediately become a household appliance
Commercial kitchens were a more natural early market than homes. The National Inventors Hall of Fame notes that household hot-water heaters could not supply the amount of water the machines needed, and that dishes could be left with soapy residue. An exhibition success therefore did not mean the appliance was instantly practical or common in domestic kitchens.

Cochran’s achievement was not simply the idea of washing dishes mechanically. She developed a rack-based, pressure-washing machine, patented it, and built a business around manufacturing, installing, and improving it. Her experience also involved resistance from mechanics who doubted her technical knowledge; the USPTO and the National Inventors Hall of Fame both attribute to her the remark, “I couldn’t get men to do the things I wanted in my way until they had tried and failed in their own. And that was costly for me.”

Her story is a reminder that an invention’s usefulness depends on more than its mechanism: it also needs a design suited to the objects being cleaned, customers with the right kind of need, and infrastructure—in this case, an adequate supply of hot water—to make it practical.
