The De’Longhi La Specialista Arte EC9155 makes manual home espresso approachable with an integrated grinder and dosing tools, but serious enthusiasts may outgrow its limited grinder adjustment range.

Verdict: The De’Longhi La Specialista Arte is a convincing entry point to manual home espresso. Its integrated grinder, dosing accessories, pressure gauge, preset drinks, and manual steam wand make the process more approachable than buying separate equipment. However, the original EC9155 is not a one-touch machine, and its eight-setting grinder may eventually limit anyone who wants highly precise control or consistently extracts demanding light-roast coffees.

This review covers the original La Specialista Arte, primarily the U.S. EC9155M/EC9155MB. Do not confuse it with the newer La Specialista Arte Evo EC9255, which is a different model.

What kind of espresso machine is the La Specialista Arte?

The La Specialista Arte is a semi-automatic espresso machine with an integrated conical-burr grinder. It combines the grinder, portafilter, espresso brewer, pressure gauge, and manual steam wand in one appliance, but it still expects you to take part in making the coffee.

That makes it fundamentally different from both a pod machine and a superautomatic bean-to-cup machine. It does not turn beans into a finished latte at the press of one button. Instead, it guides you through the basic barista workflow:

#1 Best Overall
De'Longhi La Specialista Arte Evo Espresso Machine with Coffee Grinder
  • BUILT-IN BURR GRINDER: The conical burr grinder delivers a precise, consistent dose of freshly ground coffee for a single or double espresso and cold brew drinks; with 8 grind settings, explore your favorite bean varieties and prepare them for optimal extraction.
  • POWERFUL STEAM WAND: This commercial-style steam wand heats up quickly and delivers the right steam pressure needed to create consistently smooth micro-foam; optimal for latte art right at home.
  • COLD EXTRACTION TECHNOLOGY: Enjoy cold brew in under 5 minutes with De’Longhi’s proprietary Cold Extraction Technology. This innovative technology, developed in collaboration with the Specialty Coffee Association, utilizes precisely measured water flow and pressure rates, along with specific extraction temperatures; creating delicious single Cold Brew coffee in less than five minutes.
  • BARISTA KIT: The professional barista toolkit makes your experience mess-free and easier than ever with the dosing and tamping guide and tamping mat; with these tools, applying the right pressure on each grind is easier than ever for consistent extraction results, every time.
  • IDEAL PRESSURE: La Specialista Arte Evo has a 15 bar Italian pump that delivers perfect pressure; which is essential during the whole brewing process, from low pressure during pre-infusion, to the optimal 9 bar of high pressure during extraction.
  1. Fill the hopper with beans.
  2. Select a grind setting and dose.
  3. Grind into the portafilter.
  4. Use the supplied dosing funnel or barista accessories to reduce mess.
  5. Distribute and tamp the grounds manually.
  6. Lock in the portafilter and select a drink.
  7. Steam and texture milk yourself for cappuccinos, lattes, and similar drinks.
  8. Clean the portafilter, steam wand, drip tray, and work area.

De’Longhi lists three preset functions—Espresso, Long Black, and Hot Water—along with three coffee-temperature settings on relevant product literature. The official U.S. product page is the best reference for the exact controls on a U.S. machine: De’Longhi La Specialista Arte EC9155M.

Who should buy it?

The Arte is best suited to a beginner or casual enthusiast who wants to learn espresso without immediately purchasing a separate grinder. It is particularly appealing to households that mainly make espresso-based milk drinks, straight espresso, Americanos, or hot water for tea.

  • Good fit: beginners moving up from pods or drip coffee, users who want an integrated grinder, and households that value a guided but hands-on routine.
  • Less suitable: advanced espresso hobbyists, people who frequently change beans, users focused on very light roasts, and anyone expecting automatic milk drinks.
  • Think carefully if: you want to upgrade the grinder independently later. An integrated machine keeps the countertop tidy, but the grinder cannot be replaced as easily as a separate unit.

The central buying question is whether you want the most approachable all-in-one way to participate in making espresso, or the greatest possible control and upgradeability for your money. The Arte is strongest on the first measure.

Setup and day-to-day workflow

The integrated design removes one major beginner obstacle: choosing and positioning a separate grinder. Beans go into the hopper, and the machine grinds directly into the portafilter. The dosing funnel and other supplied tools are intended to make that process cleaner and help guide tamping.

It is still worth treating the first setup as calibration rather than simply switching the machine on. Coffee behaves differently according to freshness, roast level, density, dose, and humidity. A grind number is not a universal recipe, so a setting that works for one bag of beans may not work for the next.

The pressure gauge is useful as beginner feedback. It helps demonstrate that grind size, dose, and tamping change the resistance of the coffee puck. But it is not a laboratory measurement of pressure at the puck, and it cannot diagnose every poor-tasting shot. A gauge can look broadly sensible while stale coffee, channeling, or an unsuitable recipe still produces a disappointing cup.

The integrated grinder: convenient, but the main limitation

The U.S. EC9155M specification lists eight grinder settings, with single- and double-dose grinding. Eight settings are enough to teach the basic relationship between grind size and extraction. They are less flexible than the many smaller adjustments available on a dedicated espresso grinder.

In practical terms, the Arte gives a beginner a manageable starting point, but not an especially broad dialing-in window. If a particular coffee falls between two useful settings, you have fewer ways to make a fine correction. That matters more as your expectations increase, especially with lighter or unusually dense roasts.

This does not prove that the grinder is inherently poor. It means its adjustment range is narrower than that of a capable standalone espresso grinder. Users who stick with one approachable medium or medium-dark roast may find the limitation relatively unimportant. Users who regularly experiment with beans may notice it quickly.

De'Longhi La Specialista Arte Evo Espresso Machine with Coffee Grinder
  • #1 Worldwide Espresso Machine Maker* *Independent Research Institute, Sales Leader, Full Year 2025
  • BUILT-IN CONICAL BURR GRINDER: Delivers a precise, consistent dose of freshly ground coffee with 15 grind settings for single or double espresso and cold brew drinks.
  • COLD EXTRACTION TECHNOLOGY: Enjoy cold brew in under 5 minutes using De'Longhi's proprietary technology, developed with the Specialty Coffee Association for optimal flavor.
  • POWERFUL STEAM WAND: Commercial-style wand heats up quickly and delivers the right steam pressure to create consistently smooth micro-foam, perfect for latte art at home.
  • ACTIVE TEMPERATURE CONTROL & IDEAL PRESSURE: Choose from 3 temperature settings and benefit from a 15-bar Italian pump that ensures optimal 9-bar pressure during extraction.

Grounds retention and scattering are also practical ownership concerns for any integrated grinder. Keeping the dosing path clean and using the supplied funnel can reduce mess, but no built-in grinder should be treated as perfectly waste-free.

Can it make good espresso?

Yes, the machine has the basic tools needed to make enjoyable espresso, but the result depends substantially on the user. The most important variables are fresh beans, grind size, dose, even distribution, level tamping, brew ratio, extraction time, water quality, and temperature selection.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

De’Longhi specifies a 15-bar pump. That is a pump rating, not proof that the coffee puck extracts at 15 bar or that the machine will produce better espresso than one with a lower marketing number. Taste and repeatability depend more on puck preparation, grind consistency, temperature management, and the recipe.

A sensible way to evaluate the Arte is to change only one variable at a time. Use one freshly roasted coffee, record its roast date, weigh the dose and beverage output, note the grind setting and temperature, and record the shot time. Taste for sourness, bitterness, astringency, body, clarity, and balance. Repeat the shot before deciding whether an adjustment helped.

That approach reveals the machine’s real character: it can teach the fundamentals and produce satisfying results, but it does not remove the judgment involved in manual espresso. “Barista quality” should be understood as a possibility dependent on beans and technique—not as an automatic outcome.

Milk steaming and latte art

The Arte uses De’Longhi’s My LatteArt manual milk system. The wand is an advantage for anyone who wants to learn proper milk texturing, but it is not a shortcut to a finished latte.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You must position the wand correctly, introduce air during the early part of steaming, then create a smooth rolling motion while controlling temperature. Milk volume, pitcher shape, milk type, and technique all affect the result. Dairy milk and plant-based milks can behave differently, so a successful method with one carton may need adjustment with another.

Once mastered, a manual wand can create smooth microfoam and allow more control than an automatic frother. The trade-off is time and practice. Anyone seeking one-touch cappuccinos should choose a superautomatic machine instead.

Included accessories

The supplied barista kit is one of the Arte’s more useful features. Depending on the exact regional SKU and retailer bundle, the package may include a portafilter, filter baskets, tamper, dosing funnel or guide, milk pitcher, and cleaning accessories. Some packages may also include a water filter or other maintenance items.

Check the contents of the exact box before buying rather than assuming every product photograph represents every regional bundle. De’Longhi’s product and support materials are the appropriate starting points: official EC9155MB support.

Countertop space and specifications

For the U.S. EC9155M, De’Longhi lists the following specifications:

Specification U.S. EC9155M listing
Dimensions Approximately 11.22 inches wide × 14.37 inches deep × 15.87 inches high
Weight Approximately 21.5 pounds
Water tank 56 U.S. fluid ounces
Maximum cup height 4.5 inches
Pump 15 bar rated
Heating system One thermoblock
Water and drip tray Removable

Those measurements make it reasonably compact for an integrated espresso machine, but not small in absolute terms. The listed height may not include the clearance needed to open the hopper or remove the water tank. Measure the usable space under cabinets, behind the machine, and in front of it for the portafilter and cup. A deep counter or low cabinet can make refilling and cleaning inconvenient.

Regional specifications differ. The U.S. model is listed at 120 V and 1550 W, while international versions can use different electrical specifications. Buy the model intended for your country; do not rely on a plug adapter to solve a voltage mismatch.

Cleaning and maintenance

The Arte is easier to maintain when cleaning is treated as part of every drink rather than an occasional rescue job.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Wipe and purge the steam wand immediately after steaming.
  • Rinse the portafilter and basket after brewing.
  • Empty and rinse the drip tray as needed.
  • Keep the grinder outlet and dosing area free of retained grounds.
  • Maintain or replace the water filter if your package includes one and you use it.
  • Descale when the machine indicates it or when the manual specifies.
  • Clean the brew outlet and internal parts according to the EC9155 manual.

Dried milk residue is both a hygiene problem and a performance problem. Do not immerse electrical components or use improvised chemicals that are not approved for the machine. Exact indicator meanings, cleaning cycles, and schedules vary by model and region, so consult the official support documentation before attempting a deeper service procedure.

Troubleshooting common shot problems

Symptom Likely causes First adjustment
Sour, thin, fast shot Grind too coarse, insufficient dose, under-extraction, or unsuitable beans Try a finer grind or a longer extraction, changing one variable at a time
Bitter, harsh, slow shot Grind too fine, excessive dose, or over-extraction Try a coarser grind or shorter extraction
Pressure rises excessively Grind too fine, too much coffee, or an overly compact puck Coarsen the grind, check the dose, and tamp evenly
Weak shot with little body Stale beans, low dose, coarse grind, or channeling Use fresher beans and verify dose and distribution
Uneven spurting Channeling or uneven puck preparation Distribute grounds evenly and tamp level
Poor milk texture Incorrect wand position, insufficient stretching, wrong milk volume, or no purge Practice a consistent steaming routine and clean the wand immediately

These are general espresso-diagnosis principles, not a substitute for the EC9155 manual’s exact light patterns or fault-recovery instructions.

Original Arte versus Arte Evo

Model identification matters. The original Arte is generally identified as EC9155, with U.S. variants such as EC9155M and EC9155MB. The newer Arte Evo is identified as EC9255 in current coverage and adds different features, including cold-brew-related functionality where offered.

A review of the Evo should not be used as direct evidence for the original Arte’s performance, controls, included accessories, or specifications. Check the model number printed on the machine or packaging before ordering replacement baskets, portafilters, filters, or other accessories. Compatibility is not universal across the La Specialista family.

How it compares with alternatives

Breville Bambino or Bambino Plus with a separate grinder

This route is likely better for buyers who value a compact, modular setup and want to upgrade the grinder independently. It requires more equipment and may cost more as a complete system, but it avoids making the built-in grinder the long-term limit.

Breville Barista Express

The Barista Express is another relevant integrated grinder-and-espresso option for buyers who prefer a conventional enthusiast workflow. It presents the same broad trade-off: all-in-one convenience versus a grinder that cannot be upgraded independently. Current value depends on the exact model, sale price, and whether the machine is new or refurbished.

Breville Barista Pro

The Barista Pro may suit buyers willing to pay more for a broader feature set and a different interface. It remains an integrated machine, however, so it is still less modular than a separate grinder and espresso machine.

Gaggia Classic Pro with a separate grinder

This is a stronger direction for buyers who prioritize machine simplicity and an upgradeable enthusiast setup. It is also more demanding: you must supply a grinder, learn more of the process yourself, and potentially buy additional accessories.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

De’Longhi La Specialista Arte Evo

The Arte Evo is the logical comparison for buyers who specifically want the newer Arte variant, but it should be assessed as a separate product. Do not assume that a feature or performance conclusion about EC9255 applies to EC9155.

Reasons to buy and reasons to skip

Buy the La Specialista Arte if:

  • You want an integrated grinder and espresso machine in one appliance.
  • You are willing to grind, tamp, extract, and steam manually.
  • You value learning the barista process without assembling a full separate setup.
  • You mainly make espresso drinks, Americanos, and milk beverages.
  • You appreciate guided dosing tools and a pressure gauge.

Skip it if:

  • You want one-touch lattes or cappuccinos.
  • You expect maximum repeatability with many different coffees.
  • You mainly drink large brewed coffee.
  • You already know you will want a more adjustable grinder.
  • You make many consecutive milk drinks and expect commercial-level steaming performance.
  • You want to upgrade the grinder without replacing the machine.

Final verdict

The De’Longhi La Specialista Arte is a practical, approachable all-in-one choice for beginners who want more involvement than a pod or superautomatic machine provides. The dosing accessories, integrated grinder, pressure feedback, preset drinks, and manual steam wand create a useful learning path without requiring a separate grinder on day one.

Its important limitation is the grinder’s relatively narrow eight-setting adjustment range on the U.S. EC9155M. That is adequate for learning and for users who settle on suitable beans, but it can become frustrating for enthusiasts chasing fine control, light-roast recipes, or highly repeatable results. The manual steam wand creates the same overall compromise: more control and learning potential, less instant convenience.

Buy it if you want a guided introduction to manual espresso in one appliance. Choose a separate grinder and espresso machine if you already expect to become serious about dialing in coffee or upgrading over time.
