Reset Your Blink Camera: The Safest Step-by-Step Fix for Offline Cameras and Sync Modules

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Start with a reboot, not a factory reset. For a battery-powered Blink camera, remove the batteries for at least five seconds, reinstall them, and wait about 30 seconds. For a USB-powered model, disconnect power for five seconds and reconnect it. This power cycle does not factory-reset the camera.

If several cameras are offline, check the Sync Module first. If the problem started after changing your router, Wi-Fi name, or password, use Blink’s Wi-Fi-change workflow instead of repeatedly pressing reset buttons. Reserve a factory reset for the Sync Module as a last resort because it requires setting the system up again.

Before resetting: identify the part that is failing

Blink uses the word “reset” for several different actions, and they do not have the same consequences:

  • Restart the Blink app: Useful when the app display is stuck, but it does not restart the hardware.
  • Power-cycle a camera: Removing batteries or briefly disconnecting USB power is the safest hardware restart.
  • Power-cycle the Sync Module: This restarts the hub used by many wireless Blink cameras.
  • Change Wi-Fi: Reconnects a device after a router, network name, or password change.
  • Factory-reset the Sync Module: Erases its setup state and requires the system to be configured again.

Do not assume that every Blink model has one universal reset procedure. Blink Mini, Mini 2, Video Doorbell, and Wired Floodlight Camera can operate without a Sync Module. Many Outdoor, Indoor, XT, and XT2 setups use one as the communication hub.

  • See and speak from the Blink app — Experience 1080p HD live view, infrared night vision, and crisp two-way audio.
  • Two-year battery life — Set up in minutes and get up to two years of power with the included AA Energizer lithium batteries and a Blink Sync Module Core.
  • Enhanced motion detection — Be alerted to motion faster from your smartphone with dual-zone, enhanced motion detection.
  • Person detection — Get alerts when a person is detected with embedded computer vision (CV) as part of an optional Blink Subscription Plan (sold separately).

In the Blink app, one affected camera may appear dimmed with “Camera is offline.” If dependent cameras are affected together, you may instead see “Sync Module is offline.” That distinction determines what to reboot first.

Blink’s camera-offline guidance recommends checking the Sync Module when a camera depends on it.

Use this quick decision guide

Symptom Best first action If it fails
One camera is offline Power-cycle that camera Check batteries, signal strength, and Wi-Fi
All cameras using one Sync Module are offline Reboot the Sync Module Restart the router, then reconfigure Wi-Fi
The router or Wi-Fi password changed Use Change Wi-Fi Network in the Blink app Factory-reset the Sync Module only if reconfiguration fails
Camera Busy or failed thumbnail Power-cycle the camera and check the network Move it closer to the hub and inspect the batteries
Sync Module has no lights Check the outlet, adapter, and cable Contact Blink Support if known-good power does not work
Camera works near the hub but not in its installed location Reduce distance and interference Reposition the camera or Sync Module

How to reboot a Blink camera

Battery-powered Blink cameras

  1. Remove both batteries from the camera.
  2. Wait at least five seconds.
  3. Reinsert the batteries.
  4. Wait approximately 30 seconds for the camera to reconnect.
  5. Open the Blink app and test live view or request a thumbnail.

If the camera remains offline or reports a low battery, install new 1.5-volt lithium AA batteries, which Blink recommends for its battery-powered cameras. Battery type, temperature, motion activity, live-view use, and signal quality can all affect performance, so rechargeable AA batteries should not be assumed to provide equivalent results.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

This procedure is a power cycle—not a factory reset. It will not correct an offline Sync Module, an invalid Wi-Fi password, or an internet outage.

Source: Blink camera offline troubleshooting

USB-powered Blink cameras

  1. Disconnect the USB cable from the camera or wall adapter.
  2. Wait five seconds.
  3. Reconnect the cable.
  4. Wait about 30 seconds.
  5. Test the camera in the Blink app.

Do not force the connector or continue using a visibly damaged cable or power adapter. If the camera still does not power on with a known-good outlet and adapter, the problem may be hardware-related rather than a software reset issue.

How to reboot the Blink Sync Module

For a system that uses a Sync Module:

  1. Unplug the Sync Module from power.
  2. Wait 10 seconds.
  3. Plug it back in.
  4. Allow the LEDs to stabilize before testing the cameras.
  5. Check whether the Sync Module and its cameras return online in the Blink app.

Blink documents these useful LED interpretations, although minor behavior can vary by model:

LED pattern Practical meaning
Solid blue Starting up
Blinking blue and solid green Ready for setup or pairing
Solid blue and blinking green Offline and attempting to reconnect to the configured network
Solid red Network connection problem or incorrect Wi-Fi credentials
Solid blue and solid green Online and connected

These patterns are described in Blink’s Wi-Fi and network guide for the Sync Module Core, Sync Module XR, Sync Module 2, and first-generation Sync Module. Use the model-specific instructions if your LEDs behave differently.

If the router or Wi-Fi password changed

Changing the network name, replacing the router, or changing the Wi-Fi password usually requires reconnecting the relevant Blink device. Rebooting the camera repeatedly will not fix credentials stored for the old network.

Change Wi-Fi for a Sync Module

  1. Open the Blink app and select the affected system.
  2. From the Home screen, tap Sync Module.
  3. Tap Change Wi-Fi Network.
  4. Follow the app instructions until the Sync Module shows blinking blue and steady green.
  5. Press the Sync Module reset button as instructed.
  6. Tap Discover Device when prompted.
  7. Join the temporary network, usually named BLINK-XXXX.
  8. Select your home Wi-Fi network and enter its password.
  9. Tap Join and wait for confirmation that the Sync Module was added to the system.
  10. Tap Done, then test the cameras.

According to Blink’s Wi-Fi update instructions, changing the Sync Module’s Wi-Fi network does not delete saved clips. That statement should not be expanded into a blanket guarantee about every factory-reset, local-storage, cloud, or subscription situation.

Change Wi-Fi for a standalone Blink Mini

  1. Open the camera’s More (…) menu.
  2. Select Device Settings, then General Settings.
  3. Tap Change Wi-Fi.
  4. Follow the instruction to press and release the camera’s reset button until the red and blue lights flash.
  5. Wait for blinking blue and solid green.
  6. Tap Discover Device.
  7. Join the temporary Blink network.
  8. Select the home Wi-Fi network, enter the password, and tap Join.
  9. Wait for the “Mini camera changed Wi-Fi!” confirmation, then tap Done.

Menu names can vary by model and app version. If these labels do not match, update the Blink app and consult Blink’s current device-layout guidance.

Network checks before a factory reset

If the Sync Module remains offline, work through these checks:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Confirm internet access: Test another device on the same home network.
  2. Restart the router: Unplug it for about 30 seconds, reconnect it, and wait until internet access returns.
  3. Use the supported band: Blink’s current support guidance specifies a 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi connection. A combined 2.4 GHz/5 GHz network may work, but temporarily separating bands can help during setup.
  4. Check upload speed and DHCP: Blink states that systems need at least 2 Mbps upload speed and a network using DHCP.
  5. Simplify mesh or extender setups: Temporarily disconnect Wi-Fi pods or extenders while troubleshooting, then reconnect them after the Sync Module is online.
  6. Check permissions: The app may need Local Network permission on iOS or Location permission on Android to discover the temporary Blink network.
  7. Check placement: Blink describes a typical Sync Module-to-camera range of up to approximately 100 feet (30 meters) in one building without unusually dense construction materials. Walls, concrete, metal, interference, and placement can reduce that range substantially.
  8. Temporarily disable interfering software: VPNs, firewall apps, or restrictive phone settings can interfere with setup.

Blink’s network guide lists WEP, WPA, and WPA2 with TKIP among supported security configurations and says satellite internet is not supported because of latency. Compatibility can still depend on the model, firmware, router, and region.

Advanced note for Sync Module XR with a microSD card

Blink’s XR troubleshooting guidance associates some offline conditions with power problems or an inserted microSD card. If you have an XR and ordinary power and network checks do not help, power it down, remove and inspect the card, reconnect power, and reinsert the card only after the LEDs indicate the appropriate state. Follow the XR-specific troubleshooting instructions rather than applying a generic reset-button sequence.

How to factory-reset a Blink Sync Module

Use a factory reset only after power-cycling the camera and Sync Module, restarting the router, verifying the Wi-Fi credentials, and attempting Wi-Fi reconfiguration. A factory reset is a re-setup operation, not a harmless restart.

Sync Module Core and Sync Module 2

  1. Unplug the Sync Module.
  2. Press and hold the reset button on the back.
  3. While holding the button, plug the Sync Module back in.
  4. Continue holding for five seconds.
  5. Release the button when the LED begins blinking red.
  6. Wait through the LED cycle until blinking blue and solid green indicate setup readiness.
  7. Set the Sync Module up again in the Blink app.

First-generation Sync Module

The first-generation unit places its reset button beside the USB port. A thin object, such as a paperclip or toothpick, may be needed. Do not assume its button location matches newer hardware.

Sync Module XR

Blink’s current XR support page identifies a reset button on the back and describes a hold-until-solid-red reset operation. Because the retrieved factory-reset documentation explicitly names Core, Sync Module 2, and first-generation hardware, confirm the exact XR workflow on Blink’s model-specific reset page before proceeding.

Set up the Sync Module after a factory reset

  1. Open the Blink app and tap the + icon.
  2. Select Sync Module.
  3. Scan the QR code or enter the serial number manually.
  4. Choose an existing system or create a new one.
  5. Wait for blinking blue and solid green LEDs.
  6. Tap Discover Device.
  7. Join the temporary BLINK-xxxx network.
  8. Select the home Wi-Fi network and enter its password.
  9. Wait for setup to complete.
  10. Add or reconnect cameras if the app asks you to.

See Blink’s Sync Module setup instructions for the current app flow.

When resetting will not solve the problem

A reset cannot repair a failed power adapter, damaged cable, defective camera, dead outlet, internet outage, or persistent hardware failure. Stop troubleshooting and contact Blink Support when:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • The camera will not power on with fresh recommended batteries or known-good USB power.
  • The Sync Module has no lights after checking the outlet, adapter, and cable.
  • The Sync Module never reaches the expected pairing LED pattern.
  • Factory reset fails repeatedly.
  • The camera or hub has visible physical damage.
  • A known-good network and power source do not restore operation.

Replacing a camera or Sync Module makes sense only after these checks establish that hardware—not Wi-Fi credentials, the router, batteries, or the account setup—is the likely cause.

Will resetting Blink delete recordings?

There is an important distinction. Blink states that changing the Sync Module’s Wi-Fi network does not delete saved clips. A factory reset is more disruptive because the Sync Module must be set up again. Do not treat a factory reset as automatically risk-free for every storage method or account configuration; verify the storage and clip implications for your specific system before proceeding.

Final troubleshooting order

  1. Determine whether one camera or the whole system is affected.
  2. Restart the Blink app.
  3. Power-cycle the affected camera.
  4. Replace depleted batteries with 1.5V lithium AA batteries when applicable.
  5. Power-cycle the Sync Module if the setup uses one.
  6. Restart the router and confirm internet access.
  7. Check 2.4 GHz connectivity, DHCP, upload speed, permissions, distance, and interference.
  8. Use Change Wi-Fi Network after a router or password change.
  9. Factory-reset and re-add the Sync Module only as a last resort.
