The 2026 claim comes primarily from analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, who reported in November 2024 that Apple planned to begin mass production of a wireless camera in 2026. The report is credible enough to follow, but it is not confirmation of a launch, price, design, or final specification.
What the original report says
Kuo reported that Apple was developing a wireless smart-home camera with deep integration into Siri and Apple Intelligence. He also suggested that Apple had long-term ambitions for shipments in the tens of millions.

Those details describe an analyst forecast, not an Apple product announcement. “Mass production in 2026” does not necessarily mean the camera will be available in stores during 2026. Production could be delayed, the launch could move into 2027, or the project could change or be canceled. A shipment target is also an aspiration, not a guarantee of sales.

9to5Mac’s report and MacRumors’ coverage attribute the claims to Kuo.
Would it really be Apple’s first smart-home camera?
Yes—if “Apple camera” means hardware designed, branded, and sold by Apple. No—if it means the first camera that works with Apple’s smart-home platform.
Apple’s Home app has supported compatible third-party cameras for years. Supported models can display live feeds, send notifications, and use HomeKit Secure Video for event-based recording. The accurate description is therefore Apple’s first branded smart-home camera or Apple’s first in-house camera hardware for HomeKit.

Calling it Apple’s “first HomeKit camera” would be misleading because HomeKit cameras from other manufacturers already exist. Apple’s Home app is the platform; it does not mean Apple manufactures every accessory listed in it.

This limitation also applies to Aqara Home when both platforms are used simultaneously.
How HomeKit Secure Video fits in
HomeKit Secure Video is Apple’s software, security, and storage framework for compatible IP cameras. It is separate from camera manufacturing. Depending on the camera and the user’s setup, the Home app can show live video and save motion-triggered clips for supported events.
Apple says compatible footage is protected through its security architecture, including end-to-end encryption. The camera sends relevant video to an Apple home hub, where supported analysis and secure handling take place. Details vary by camera, Apple Account, software version, and iCloud+ eligibility, so HomeKit support does not guarantee identical features across brands.
An Apple TV 4K or HomePod can act as a home hub for remote access and automations. Apple’s remote-control guidance explains the hub requirement. The Home app can also show multiple camera feeds, with Apple documentation describing up to four camera views together in the Home tab: Apple’s Home guide.

Later reports connected the camera with Apple’s broader smart-home plans, including a rumored display-equipped HomePod or smart-home hub. Those reports have described a small display with a speaker base or wall-mounting option, FaceTime support, Home controls, and home-security functions.

That could make a camera especially useful for checking feeds, receiving alerts, or interacting with Siri from a central household device. However, the camera and the rumored hub may be separate products. Apple has not confirmed that they will launch together, that one will require the other, or that either product will ship in a particular month.
See the related reporting from MacRumors, a later MacRumors report on the hub, and 9to5Mac’s report on Apple’s wider smart-home roadmap.
Reported, supported, and unknown
| Status | What it means |
|---|---|
| Reported | Wireless connectivity, deep Siri integration, and Apple Intelligence integration were attributed to Kuo’s reporting. |
| Supported today | Apple Home camera feeds, compatible HomeKit Secure Video recording, notifications, and remote access through a suitable home hub. |
| Unknown | Price, launch date, resolution, sensor, lens, night vision, battery life, weather resistance, storage, subscription requirements, chip, product name, and availability. |
Features such as person, package, pet, vehicle, or face recognition are plausible extensions of Apple’s existing platform, but they should not be treated as confirmed specifications. The same applies to 4K video, two-way audio, local storage, a particular Apple silicon chip, or an outdoor rating.
What Apple users can buy today
Readers who need coverage now can choose a compatible third-party camera and add it through the Home app. Options include Apple-focused products such as the Logitech Circle View and Eve Cam. Their current availability and specifications should be checked before purchase.

Aqara cameras can offer a broader hardware range, including models involving hubs, sensors, and pan-and-tilt functions. eufy cameras may appeal to buyers prioritizing local storage or reduced dependence on recurring cloud fees. Neither brand’s entire range should be assumed to support Apple Home or HomeKit Secure Video; compatibility is model-specific.
Apple Home also supports Matter accessories, but Matter compatibility does not automatically provide every Apple-specific camera feature. Check the exact model’s HomeKit Secure Video support, recording behavior, hub requirements, and manufacturer subscription terms.
Should you wait for Apple?
Wait if you are deeply invested in Apple, want possible first-party Siri and Apple Intelligence integration, do not urgently need surveillance, and accept that the rumored product has no confirmed launch date or specifications.
Buy an existing compatible camera if you need protection now, require outdoor operation, local recording, 2K or 4K video, pan-and-tilt movement, a particular mounting system, cross-platform support, or a known price and review history.
A current HomeKit camera is a practical solution, but it is not a guaranteed substitute for Apple’s rumored hardware. Conversely, Apple branding would not automatically make the camera better in every respect. The relevant trade-off is likely to be deeper ecosystem integration and Apple’s privacy model versus greater hardware choice, established features, and potentially lower cost elsewhere.
Questions Apple would need to answer
- When will the camera actually go on sale, and in which countries?
- Will it require continuous power, or will it have a battery?
- What resolution, frame rate, HDR, field of view, and low-light performance will it offer?
- Will it work indoors, outdoors, or both?
- Will HomeKit Secure Video recording require iCloud+ or another subscription?
- Will it support local storage or only cloud-based recording?
- Which detections will be available, and how will false alerts be handled?
- Will Siri and Apple Intelligence features work in every region and language?
- Will an Apple TV 4K or HomePod be required for remote viewing and automations?
- Will the camera support other smart-home platforms, Matter, or only Apple Home?
- What will the camera, hub, storage, and replacement accessories cost together?
What to check before buying any HomeKit camera
- Confirm that the exact model—not merely the brand—supports Apple Home and the features you need.
- Check whether HomeKit Secure Video is supported and what recording limits or iCloud+ requirements apply.
- Confirm whether a home hub is needed for remote access, automations, or recording.
- Compare power requirements, weather resistance, mounting options, night performance, and audio.
- Check whether important features remain locked inside the manufacturer’s app or subscription.
- Review cross-platform compatibility if members of your household use Alexa, Google Home, or another system.
Apple’s Apple Home developer platform, Matter documentation, and HomeKit Secure Video security guide provide the relevant technical context.
