Reolink’s local-security strategy can reduce cloud dependence and recurring AI fees, but “local AI hub” describes two different products. The Home Hub, Home Hub Pro and Hub 1 primarily centralize cameras, local recording and device management. The newer Reolink AI Box, announced at CES 2026, is the product aimed at advanced local AI such as natural-language alerts, event descriptions and Smart Summary.

That distinction matters. Standard person, vehicle and object detection may run on compatible cameras or recorders, while Reolink currently identifies AI Video Search+, Smart Summary, Prompt-Based Alerts and Event Description as AI Box features. The result is a compelling option for privacy-conscious homeowners and small businesses—but only after checking camera compatibility, firmware, storage and the exact AI functions required.

Home Hub Pro is designed for larger installations. Reolink’s current US store material lists support for up to 24 cameras and a built-in 2TB HDD, with expansion up to 16TB advertised for Pro models. Confirm the exact expansion method and drive limits for the regional model before buying; those details can vary by product and manual.

Hub 1 supports up to eight cameras, includes a 128GB microSD card and accepts two microSD cards of up to 512GB each. It also supports Wi-Fi 6, AES-128 encryption and local operation during an Internet outage. Hub 1 should not automatically be treated as identical to every older product sold under the Home Hub name.

The AI Box is different. Reolink says it uses Qualcomm Dragonwing Q8-series hardware to process detection, analysis and search locally, and can integrate with most Reolink cameras, Home Hubs and NVRs. Reolink explicitly excludes 4G cameras. Its announcement date was January 6, 2026, but the official pages covered here do not establish a normal US retail price or broad buy-now availability, so buyers should verify both before treating it as an immediately available product.

What “local AI” means

With local processing, the camera, hub, NVR or AI Box analyzes video inside the user’s equipment or network instead of sending the relevant video to a remote AI service for every detection. Local storage keeps recordings under the owner’s control, while local-network access can continue even when the wider Internet is unavailable.

This offers three practical benefits:

  • Lower recurring cost: Reolink says its local AI capabilities do not require a subscription.
  • Reduced cloud exposure: Video used for local analysis need not be sent to an external cloud AI-processing service.
  • Less dependence on Internet connectivity: Local recording and local access may continue during an outage.

It is not the same as being completely offline. Remote viewing from outside the property generally needs an Internet connection. Push notifications delivered remotely may fail during an outage, and cloud backup or Cloud AI will not work normally without connectivity. Local processing also does not make a system immune to weak passwords, outdated firmware, exposed network services or a compromised camera.

Which AI features are included?

“AI” is not one universal capability across Reolink hardware. Reolink’s current ReoNeura feature breakdown separates ordinary detection and search from AI Box functions:

Rank #2
REOLINK Home Hub Centralized Control for up to 8 Battery/WiFi Cameras
  • 【Only Compatibe with Reolink Battery Wi-Fi Camera & Doorbell】: Reolink Home Hub is compatible with most Reolink battery Wi-Fi cameras and doorbells. No subscriptions required, making it ideal for families looking to cut unnecessary costs while ensuring reliable, long-term storage of security footage.(microSD card NOT included)
  • [Security Summaries & Smart Alarm Center]: Stay on top of what's happening around your home with daily, weekly, and monthly event summaries. Easily track motion-triggered events and quickly access video footage through the app. Plus, siren alerts help deter intruders with immediate, loud notifications when suspicious activity is detected. Whether you’re at home enjoying family time or traveling for work, you’ll always be in the know.
  • [Advanced Privacy Protection]: Reolink Home Hub ensures your data remains secure with AES-128 encryption and exclusive Reolink security algorithms. Even if your device is stolen or reset, your recordings remain inaccessible, guaranteeing that your home security footage is always protected. The Home Hub is only compatible with a DC 12V/1A input.
Feature Where it may run Important limitation
Person and object detection Compatible cameras and devices Depends on the model and firmware
Smart event detection Selected compatible devices Some functions are device-specific or beta
Perimeter Protection Compatible cameras and devices Line-crossing, loitering and intrusion functions vary
Standard AI Video Search Compatible cameras, NVRs and supported devices Uses available AI alarm information
AI Video Search+ AI Box Do not assume every Home Hub provides it
Smart Summary AI Box Currently identified by Reolink as an AI Box feature
Prompt-Based Alerts AI Box Requires compatible AI Box integration
Event Description AI Box Produces descriptions and risk levels; not a guaranteed security judgment
Heat Map NVR Not presented as a general Home Hub feature

Standard AI Video Search should not be understood as unrestricted forensic search through every frame. Reolink’s documentation describes searching recordings associated with AI alarm events. Results therefore depend on detection metadata, supported hardware, recorded footage and whether the camera identified the event correctly. Missed detections can mean missing search results, and older footage may not be searchable in the same way.

Does local AI really mean no subscription?

It means no subscription for Reolink’s stated local AI path—not that every Reolink service is free. Reolink separately offers Cloud AI, which requires a compatible device linked to a plan that includes Cloud AI capabilities. Its Cloud AI documentation should be consulted if cloud storage or cloud processing is part of the intended setup.

The no-subscription comparison also needs to include the total ownership cost: cameras, the hub or AI Box, microSD cards or an HDD, network equipment, electricity, replacement storage and possibly a UPS. Avoiding a monthly charge does not make the hardware free; it changes the cost from recurring service fees to upfront equipment and maintenance.

Camera compatibility is the purchase checkpoint

“Compatible with Reolink cameras” is too broad to be useful. Support can depend on the exact model, hardware revision, UID, firmware and whether the camera was supplied as part of an NVR kit.

Reolink generally supports PoE cameras, plug-in Wi-Fi cameras and some newer battery-powered Wi-Fi cameras, sometimes after a firmware upgrade. Important exclusions and exceptions include:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • 4G/LTE cameras are excluded from AI Box integration and have separate hub limitations.
  • Older 2MP battery cameras may not be supported.
  • Some NVR-kit cameras have different compatibility conditions.
  • Specific UID and hardware-version requirements may apply.

Check the live Home Hub compatibility database for every camera before purchase. Do not rely solely on the brand name or camera category.

Setup checklist

  1. Check compatibility: Confirm the exact model, hardware revision, UID conditions and firmware requirements.
  2. Update firmware: Update the hub and cameras before pairing. Battery cameras may need a hub-compatible firmware path.
  3. Connect the hub: Power it and connect its wired WAN port to the network.
  4. Add cameras: Reolink’s FAQ says cameras must be on the same local network when added.
  5. Install storage: Use suitable microSD cards in standard models or verify the HDD configuration in a Pro model.
  6. Enable supported AI: Confirm which detection and search features belong to the camera, hub, NVR or AI Box.
  7. Test outages: Check normal remote access, local access with the Internet disconnected and notification behavior during the outage.
  8. Secure the system: Use unique passwords, current firmware, limited account sharing and a physically protected hub. A UPS is sensible for security-critical installations.

Reolink’s support material is firmware-dependent. For example, one FAQ references Home Hub firmware v3.3.0.352_240926 and Home Hub Pro firmware v3.3.0.339_24080758 for a camera-removal behavior. Those figures illustrate why firmware matters; they should not be treated as universal current requirements.

Storage: capacity is not retention time

A 1TB or 2TB figure does not tell you how many days of video the system will retain. Retention depends on camera count, resolution, frame rate, compression, audio, continuous versus event recording and detection frequency.

Continuous recording from several high-resolution cameras can consume storage quickly. Event recording generally lasts longer, but it depends on reliable detection and may not capture every relevant moment. Plan storage for the actual recording mode, configure overwrite behavior and decide whether critical footage needs a separate export or backup.

The hub also creates a central point of failure. A power problem, storage failure, theft or hardware fault can affect several cameras simultaneously. That is the trade-off for simpler centralized management.

Home Hub versus NVR versus AI Box

Choose the standard Home Hub when:

  • You have a small system of up to eight compatible cameras.
  • You are combining Wi-Fi, PoE and supported battery cameras.
  • You want local recording without a monthly AI fee.
  • MicroSD-based storage is sufficient.
  • You prefer a simpler app-centered installation over a conventional recorder.

Choose Home Hub Pro when:

  • You may grow beyond eight cameras.
  • You want a built-in 2TB HDD and more storage headroom.
  • You need a centralized wireless security center but do not want a conventional PoE NVR.
  • You accept the higher initial cost and should verify the specific expansion configuration.

Choose the AI Box when:

  • Your priority is AI Video Search+, Smart Summary, prompt-based alerts or event descriptions.
  • Your existing Reolink cameras, Home Hub or NVR are otherwise adequate.
  • You are willing to verify current retail availability, compatibility and supported firmware.

Choose a conventional NVR instead when:

  • The system is mostly wired PoE.
  • Continuous recording and large storage are priorities.
  • You want a more established recorder architecture, direct display connectivity or broader storage options.
  • You already own a suitable Reolink NVR and do not need Home Hub-specific management.

For technically capable owners who want extensive self-hosting, Frigate is a more customizable alternative. A Synology owner may prefer Surveillance Station, while users already invested in UniFi networking may prefer UniFi Protect. Cloud-oriented ecosystems such as Ring, Nest and Arlo may offer simpler apps, but they are not direct like-for-like replacements for a local-first design.

Privacy and security: better exposure, not perfect protection

Local storage and local AI reduce the amount of video sent to a cloud processing service, which is a meaningful privacy advantage. Reolink advertises AES-128 storage encryption and anti-theft protection for the hub. That claim should be read narrowly: it describes stored video on the product, not necessarily every camera connection, account function, network path or cloud service.

Use unique credentials, keep firmware current, limit shared accounts and physically secure the hub and storage. Also remember that local AI can still produce false positives and false negatives. Lighting, distance, occlusion, weather, camera angle and unusual behavior can affect detection and event descriptions. Treat AI as an alerting and review aid—not as a guaranteed security decision-maker.

Bottom line

Reolink’s local approach is attractive for homeowners and small businesses that want centralized recording, reduced cloud exposure and no recurring fee for supported local AI features. The standard Home Hub is primarily a local storage and management center; Home Hub Pro adds capacity; Hub 1 is another small-system option; and the AI Box is the relevant product for Reolink’s newer semantic AI layer.

Buy based on the exact feature you need. Verify the camera compatibility list and firmware, calculate storage from your recording mode, test offline behavior and confirm the AI Box’s current price and availability. If you mainly need person or vehicle detection, a compatible camera, hub or NVR may be enough. If you specifically want Smart Summary, Prompt-Based Alerts, Event Description or AI Video Search+, plan around the AI Box rather than assuming every Home Hub includes them.
