To collect dust from a radial-arm saw, capture it near the blade with a compatible hood or shroud, then connect that device to a collector through correctly sized hose and ductwork. Start with the saw’s manual: port size and required airflow vary by model. Keep every required blade guard in place; a dust hood is not a substitute for guarding.
How to set up dust collection on a radial-arm saw
- Check the saw manual. Identify the dust ports, any specified adapter, and the required airflow at the machine connection. Do not size the system from a generic CFM rule.
- Choose a capture point near the blade. Use a compatible saw-mounted shroud or a source hood positioned to intercept dust as it leaves the cut. OSHA’s circular-saw guidance generally recommends exhausting through the bottom of the table at the blade slot; it says an additional hood above the blade, integrated with the guard, can improve control. This is general circular-saw guidance, not a tested radial-arm-saw configuration. OSHA woodworking dust guidance
- Match the connections and route. Match hose and duct diameter to the saw port and hood or shroud. Account for the actual route, bends, branches, and other open drops when selecting system components; the cited sources do not establish a universal collector size.
- Check movement and guarding before use. Confirm that the hood or shroud clears the blade, workpiece, and full saw travel, including bevel cuts where applicable. Make sure the installation does not obstruct or defeat the required guards.
What airflow and hose size does a radial-arm saw need?
The saw manufacturer’s specification is the useful starting point. For one model-specific example, the DeWALT DW729KN Type 2 manual (2020) specifies a 100 mm dust-extraction adapter and recommends 20 m/s air velocity and 500 m³/h volumetric flow at the connection. Its technical data also list extraction ports of 100 mm and 40 mm. Check the manual and setup for the exact machine: these figures are not universal, and the manual’s two listed port sizes should not be assumed to serve the same connection or configuration. Do not treat a hose diameter alone as proof that a collector will deliver the required airflow at the saw. Port adapters, duct routing, bends, branches, and simultaneous use of other drops affect the installation. Use the machine’s stated requirement and assess airflow at the connection. UK HSE woodworking guidance discusses local exhaust ventilation (LEV), airflow indicators, and circular-saw dust control. HSE WIS23(rev3), woodworking LEV guidance (2022)
Hood or saw-mounted shroud: which form fits?
These are different ways to place capture close to the cut. A source hood sits behind the saw to collect dust thrown from the blade; a saw-mounted shroud attaches to the saw frame behind the blade. Neither product description establishes fit for every radial-arm saw. Verify the exact machine, mounting points, travel, guard clearance, and connection size before buying.

| Option | What the listing describes | Fit checks |
|---|---|---|
| Oneida Air Systems 4-inch Miter or Radial Arm Saw Dust Collection Hood | Galvanized-steel source hood with adjustable flaps and a 4-inch flex-hose connection, positioned behind radial-arm and miter saws. Oneida product listing | Confirm that the hood fits behind the saw, does not interfere with travel or workpieces, and connects to a system suitable for the saw’s airflow requirement. |
| Original Saw Company dust shroud | Würth Machinery describes a shroud mounted at the rear of the radial-arm-saw frame behind the blade, with a 4-inch port, intended to capture dust during straight and bevel cuts. Würth Machinery product listing | Confirm compatibility with the specific saw and check mounting, blade and guard clearance, full travel, and hose connection. The listing’s broad fit statement is not a substitute for checking the machine. |

Dust-control hardware must not replace, obstruct, or weaken required blade guards. In the United States, OSHA’s construction standard for radial saws, 29 CFR 1926.304(g), requires an upper hood that encloses the upper blade through the arbor end, protects against flying splinters and broken teeth, and deflects sawdust away from the operator. It also requires guarding the sides of the lower exposed blade to its full diameter with a device that adjusts to stock thickness and remains in contact with the stock. Apply the rules for the machine’s location and jurisdiction. OSHA 29 CFR 1926.304

Wood dust is a health hazard, not just a housekeeping problem. The DW729KN manual identifies inhaled dust from wood—especially oak, beech, and MDF—among the machine’s residual risks. Use suitable extraction and follow applicable workplace controls; HSE’s LEV guidance covers airflow indicators and dust control for woodworking machinery.
