Switch off and unplug decorations before removing them, check every light string for damage before storing it, and take down a natural Christmas tree promptly once it is dry or shedding needles. For outdoor decorations, only use a ladder on stable, level ground if you can work safely; check local rules for tree collection and recycling.
What to do before taking decorations down
Turn off electrical decorations and unplug them before handling. When disconnecting a light string, grip the plug rather than pulling on the cord; pulling can strain the cord and its insulation. The U.S. Fire Administration, citing NFPA, says that “Almost one-third of home Christmas tree fires are caused by electrical problems.” That figure concerns home Christmas tree fires—not all holiday fires or fires that happen during takedown. How to take down outdoor decorations safely

- Set the ladder on stable, level ground.
- Face the ladder while climbing and keep your body centered between the rails.

How to check lights before storing them
Inspect each light string and extension cord as you take it down. Look for frayed or exposed wires, loose connections, and broken or cracked sockets. Discard damaged light sets rather than packing them for next year; remove them from the usable decorations so they cannot be plugged in by mistake. How to store reusable lights and decorations
Keep usable electrical decorations dry. Wrap each light string around a piece of cardboard or store sets separately so they do not become tangled together. Put them where children and pets cannot damage them. A purpose-made organizer is an optional convenience; it is not required for safe storage.

Remove a natural tree after the holidays, or sooner if it has dried out or started shedding needles. Dry trees can be a fire hazard. The New Jersey Division of Fire Safety advises against putting a tree in a garage or leaving it outside near structures. Check your municipality’s collection or recycling rules and use its program where offered; schedules and disposal options vary by location.
