Keep scrollsaw blades separated in capped tubes so you can spot and retrieve the one you need instead of sorting through a mixed pile. WOOD Magazine’s compact rack idea uses scrap 1/2-inch stock and CPVC pipe; its description gives the core materials, but not a cut list or finished dimensions.
What the organizer is for
Small scrollsaw blades are easy to mix together, which can make finding the right one slow. WOOD Magazine presents this rack as a way to separate and store blades in individual tubes. The original project is credited to John Turok of Coon Rapids, Minnesota.
WOOD Magazine’s project description says the materials are “a small amount of scrap 1/2" stock and some 1/2"-diameter (5/8" O.D.) CPVC pipe and caps.”
Materials and design details
- Scrap stock: A small amount of 1/2-inch stock forms part of the rack.
- CPVC tubes and caps: The specified pipe is 1/2 inch in diameter and 5/8 inch outside diameter. The source also calls for caps.
- Labels: Labeling the tubes is an optional way to make blade types easier to identify.
- Tool storage: Extra holes in the rack top are an optional modification for scrollsaw tools.
Those are the published project details, not a complete build plan. WOOD Magazine does not state a tube count, cut list, finished dimensions, spacing, or blade capacity. If you adapt the idea, size and lay out the holes to suit the tubes and tools you choose; that is a practical design consideration, not a measurement supplied by the project.

Rack or drilled-lid spice jar?
WOOD Magazine’s scrollsaw tips roundup also suggests a spice jar about 4 inches high, with a few holes drilled in its lid, as another way to keep blades separated and easy to see and retrieve.
| Approach | Materials and effort described | Blade separation and visibility | Tool storage |
|---|---|---|---|
| Scrap-stock rack with capped CPVC tubes | Small amount of scrap 1/2-inch stock, 1/2-inch-diameter CPVC pipe (5/8-inch outside diameter), and caps; no complete assembly sequence is stated. | Separate tubes keep blades sorted; tube labels are an optional convenience. | Extra holes in the top can be added for scrollsaw tools. |
| Spice jar | A jar about 4 inches high with a few holes drilled in its lid. | The roundup presents it as a way to separate blades where they are easy to see and retrieve. | The cited suggestion addresses blade storage only. |
The roundup does not provide a side-by-side test of cost, capacity, durability, or retrieval speed, so those factors cannot be compared from its description. Read WOOD Magazine’s roundup of more scrollsawing tips and tricks for the spice-jar suggestion.
