Qatar’s Public Works Authority, Ashghal, and contractor UCC Holding are developing 14 public schools, including two planned with 3D-printed construction. UCC says the pair together have 40,000 square meters of built-up area, making the development the world’s largest construction project using 3D printing. UCC announced that printing began in June 2025, but its forecast that the schools would be completed by the end of 2025 has not been confirmed in the available project updates.
What is Qatar building with 3D printing?
The project is part of a 14-school public development led by UCC Holding in partnership with Ashghal. Two of those schools are to be built using 3D printing. UCC describes each as a two-storey building with 20,000 square meters of built-up area, for a combined 40,000 square meters. The company bases its “world’s largest” claim on the combined scale of the two buildings, rather than on the height of a single structure. UCC’s June 2025 announcement gives the project figures.
How large are the printers and the buildings?
UCC says each school is planned on a 100-by-100-meter plot and will have two storeys. COBOD supplied two customized BODXL printers for the work; according to UCC, each printer measures 50 meters long, 30 meters wide and 15 meters high. These are project-party figures, not independent measurements. UCC’s agreement announcement describes the printer dimensions and school plans.
When did printing begin, and are the schools finished?
UCC announced on June 11, 2025, that printing had commenced. The company said this followed site preparation, printer assembly, operational simulations and training with COBOD engineers in May. It forecast completion by the end of 2025. That was a target, not confirmation of delivery: the available project announcements do not establish that the schools were completed or opened.
The parties had announced their agreement on September 18, 2024, when UCC said construction was scheduled to begin in 2025. The June 2025 announcement is the source for the start and completion forecast; the September 2024 announcement records the earlier schedule.
What preparation and operating approach did UCC describe?
UCC reported that its team conducted more than 100 full-scale trial prints over the preceding eight months using a BOD2 printer. The company said the work included developing concrete mixes, checking performance in local climate conditions and engineering a custom nozzle. These are contractor-reported preparations; the announcements do not provide independent evaluations of the trials.

UCC also said it planned to schedule printing at night to avoid high temperatures and reduce dust and noise. Those are stated operational aims, not published measurements of achieved reductions. UCC’s project-preparation announcement describes the trial prints and proposed night schedule.
How does the schools claim compare with Qatar’s Doha Expo tower?
The schools claim and Qatar’s earlier 3D-printing record refer to different categories. In 2023, the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology commissioned a separate structure for Doha Expo. Saint-Gobain Weber describes it as a 12.4-meter-tall freestanding 3D-printed concrete tower made from 85 unique printed blocks, and says it achieved a Guinness World Record in its category. That is a height claim for one structure; UCC’s schools claim concerns combined built-up area across two buildings. What is known about sustainability and construction performance?
UCC and COBOD have presented 3D printing as a way to reduce material use, waste, labor needs, emissions and delivery time. COBOD CEO Henrik Lund-Nielsen described those as potential benefits when the agreement was announced. The project announcements do not report independently measured savings, emissions results, cost comparisons or delivery-time results for the schools, so the benefits should be treated as claims or intended outcomes rather than demonstrated project performance.
