PSA is usually the better starting point when your process needs high nitrogen purity or may need different purity levels over time. A membrane generator is often the better fit for moderate-purity gas, limited space, simple operation, and rapid startup. That rule is only a screening point. The correct choice depends on the guaranteed purity at your required flow and outlet pressure, feed-air limits, operating pattern, installation constraints, and total lifecycle cost for the exact package.
What the two technologies do
Both systems make nitrogen on site from compressed air. They remove or concentrate the other components of air rather than storing all of the nitrogen needed for an operation. The separation method determines the purity range, controls, air preparation, startup behavior, and the economics of the installed system.

Pressure swing adsorption (PSA)
In a PSA generator, compressed air enters beds containing an adsorbent such as carbon molecular sieve. The adsorbent preferentially retains oxygen and allows the nitrogen-rich product stream to pass through. When a bed approaches its loading condition, the system lowers its pressure so the retained gases are released; that regeneration step prepares the bed for the next cycle. Packaged units normally alternate beds, with one producing while another regenerates.

The pressure cycle, bed size, switching controls, product receiver, and purge arrangement all affect the output that a particular model can guarantee. A PSA label by itself therefore does not establish a universal purity limit or capacity. Ask for the manufacturer’s flow-versus-purity data for the selected model, not a headline flow at a different operating point.

Membrane separation
A membrane generator sends compressed air through bundles of hollow fibers. Different gases permeate the fiber material at different rates, allowing a nitrogen-rich stream to be collected on the product side while faster-permeating gases leave through the permeate side. The fiber material, bundle area, feed pressure, stage arrangement, and controls determine the delivered specification.
Membrane packages can be mechanically simple and can reach operating output quickly, but the practical purity and flow trade-off is model-specific. A value in a membrane brochure applies to that product configuration and test basis; it should not be treated as a limit for every membrane system. Parker Hannifin’s 2019 membrane brochure, for example, describes a product range for laboratory instruments. Verify any such specification against the current literature for the industrial package you are considering.
The decision gates that should come first
Write the duty profile before asking suppliers to recommend a technology. The same generator can look attractive or unsuitable depending on the process point at which purity, pressure, and flow are measured.
1. Required purity and residual oxygen
State the nitrogen purity required at the process connection, along with the maximum acceptable variation and any residual-oxygen limit. Purity is often the first gate because it influences the separation technology, the amount of feed air required, the product buffer, and the resulting operating cost.
Manufacturer comparisons generally position PSA systems toward higher-purity service and membranes toward lower or moderate purity. Those descriptions are directional, not a universal ceiling. Some applications can tolerate a wider oxygen range than others, while a safety-critical inerting duty may require a continuously monitored limit and an automatic response if that limit is exceeded.
2. Flow at that purity
Give suppliers the normal, minimum, and peak nitrogen demand and identify whether the demand is continuous, intermittent, or highly cyclical. Require the flow guarantee at the specified purity and outlet pressure. Comparing the maximum flow printed on two nameplates is meaningless if one figure is measured at a lower purity or a different pressure.

Ask for a flow-versus-purity curve and identify whether the stated flow is standard or actual volumetric flow. The quotation should also identify the measurement point, gas temperature, and pressure basis so that competing offers use the same definition.

Specify the minimum pressure at the process inlet, the normal pressure, and any short-duration peaks. Explain whether the process needs a steady flow or can accept cycling from a receiver. A generator may produce nitrogen at a pressure that is adequate for one use but require a booster for another.
Atlas Copco’s comparison describes differences in pressure and flow stability between PSA and membrane packages. The installed result depends on the selected controls, buffer vessels, valves, and downstream regulation, so request a pressure profile for the proposed configuration rather than relying on the technology name.
4. Feed-air quality and pretreatment
Compressed-air preparation is part of the nitrogen system, not an optional accessory. Provide the inlet pressure and temperature plus limits for dew point, oil carryover, liquid water, and particulate contamination. Holtec Gas Systems describes PSA service as requiring dry feed air; the applicable threshold must come from the documentation for the actual generator.
Have the supplier size or approve the compressor, dryer, coalescing and particulate filters, drains, and receiver. Confirm what happens during a dryer upset, filter loading, or compressor oil carryover. A nitrogen generator that meets its brochure specification only with unusually clean, dry air is not meeting the plant duty unless that pretreatment is included and maintained.

5. Startup and operating profile
Record how quickly the process needs usable nitrogen after a start command, how often it will start and stop, and whether it will run continuously. Atlas Copco describes membrane systems as having faster startup and steadier output in its comparison. Startup time still depends on the model, controls, purge sequence, and whether the product receiver must be filled before the process can connect.

For a continuously operating plant, compare standby behavior, turndown, response to a sudden demand spike, and the consequences of a short power or compressor interruption. For intermittent work, include the energy and purge behavior during idle periods rather than evaluating only the full-load condition.
6. Lifecycle cost and service
Compare the complete installed and operating cost under identical assumptions. Include the generator, compressor capacity, dryer, filters, receiver, booster if required, analyzer, controls, installation, ventilation, electrical work, planned maintenance, replacement elements, and expected downtime.
Holtec notes that the relative economic case changes with purity and capacity. There is no current, independent, apples-to-apples price or payback figure established for these technologies. Treat a vendor’s savings claim as a proposal-specific calculation and request the input assumptions: electricity price, annual operating hours, compressed-air losses, purge gas, maintenance labor, and the cost of backup nitrogen.

Packaged requirements are model-specific. A compact membrane skid may simplify installation, while a PSA package may require more room for beds, valves, controls, and storage. The supplier should show the complete arrangement, not only the generator enclosure.

Fire-prevention or storage-tank inerting
Inerting systems often have a safety consequence if oxygen rises above the permitted limit. Determine the required oxygen concentration at the protected volume, the rate of change during filling or emptying, the pressure-control strategy, and the response to a generator fault. A PSA package may be favored when the specified purity is demanding or when the required purity could change as the hazard analysis develops. A membrane package may fit a less demanding duty if its guaranteed purity and response match the approved design.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDo not size an inerting generator from average consumption alone. Include displacement during transfers, leakage or breathing losses, purge events, and the time available for the system to restore the required atmosphere. Specify an oxygen analyzer, alarm thresholds, isolation logic, and backup gas or a safe shutdown path where the process assessment requires them.
Food and packaging operations
Packaging equipment may need a stable nitrogen flow at a defined pressure rather than the highest possible purity. Ask whether the gas contacts the product, what quality standard applies, and whether moisture or oil carryover can affect shelf life or packaging machinery. Compare the generator’s response to rapid machine cycling and the volume of product storage needed to prevent pressure dips.
A membrane unit can be appealing where the purity target is moderate and the package must start quickly. A PSA unit may be preferable where the process specification is tighter or where a future product change could increase the purity requirement. The decision should follow the written food-gas specification and the supplier’s guarantee.
Laboratory and analytical supply
Laboratories often have relatively steady demand but may be sensitive to gas purity, pressure stability, noise, and installation space. Establish the analyzer or instrument manufacturer’s gas specification, including allowable oxygen, moisture, hydrocarbons, particles, and pressure variation. A brochure value aimed at laboratory instruments, such as the 2019 Parker Hannifin membrane literature, is not an automatic specification for another instrument or an industrial package.
Consider whether a product receiver, final filter, point-of-use regulator, or backup cylinder connection is needed to protect experiments during a brief generator interruption. Include sample-line design and analyzer calibration in the operating plan.

How to run a defensible supplier comparison
Use one written request for every bidder. The following sequence prevents a technology preference from replacing an engineering specification.
- Define the process point. State where purity, pressure, temperature, and flow must be guaranteed. Identify all users supplied by the header and whether their demands occur simultaneously.
- Describe the duty cycle. Provide continuous, minimum, normal, and peak flow; hours per day; days per year; starts and stops; and the expected duration of peaks.
- Set the gas-quality limits. State nitrogen purity, maximum residual oxygen, dew point, oil, particles, and any industry or product-contact requirement. Identify acceptable variation and alarm limits.
- Document the site utilities. Give available electrical power, compressor arrangement, inlet pressure and temperature, ambient conditions, drainage, ventilation, noise limits, and available floor or roof space.
- Request a guaranteed operating table. Require flow at each offered purity, outlet pressure, feed-air consumption, product recovery or purge assumptions if supplied by the vendor, startup time, and turndown behavior.
- Make the package boundary explicit. Ask the supplier to mark whether the quote includes compressor, dryer, filters, drains, receiver, booster, analyzer, controls, skid, interconnecting piping, commissioning, and operator training.
- Ask for maintenance assumptions. Request inspection points, filter and membrane or adsorbent replacement requirements, valve service, analyzer calibration, recommended spares, response time, and expected downtime. Do not assume a replacement interval unless the selected manufacturer documents it.
- Model the lifecycle cost. Use the same electricity rate, annual hours, demand profile, maintenance labor rate, consumables, backup gas, and downtime cost for every offer. Separate one-time installation cost from recurring operating cost.
- Define acceptance testing. State how purity, flow, pressure, noise, startup, and alarms will be verified at commissioning, including the instruments and stabilization period used for the test.
- Plan failure operation. Require the response to low purity, high dew point, compressor failure, power loss, analyzer fault, and product-pressure drop. Include backup nitrogen, isolation, venting, and restart procedures where the process needs continuity.
Questions that expose weak proposals
- Is the quoted purity measured continuously at the process outlet or only at the generator under stable laboratory conditions?
- What flow is available at the specified purity and minimum outlet pressure, and what happens during the stated peak?
- Does the performance guarantee assume a particular inlet pressure, temperature, dew point, oil level, or filter condition?
- Is the compressor included, and is its capacity sufficient for regeneration, purge, peak demand, and future expansion?
- How much product storage is included, and what pressure or flow dip occurs when demand changes faster than the generator can respond?
- What is the time from a cold start, a normal stop, and a power interruption to on-specification nitrogen?
- Which alarms initiate automatic diversion or shutdown, and how is an analyzer failure distinguished from an actual purity failure?
- What parts are expected to be replaced, by whom, and under what service conditions?
- Which figures are guaranteed contractual values and which are illustrative values from a brochure?
- What assumptions make the lifecycle-cost calculation valid for this site?
Common selection and installation mistakes
Choosing by purity headline
A high purity number without its corresponding flow, pressure, feed-air condition, and recovery assumptions does not describe usable capacity. Require the complete operating point and the test basis.
Using average demand to size the plant
Short peaks can empty a receiver or lower header pressure even when the daily average looks modest. Supply the peak profile and check whether storage, parallel units, or a booster is required.
Leaving air treatment to the end
Moisture, oil, and particles can reduce performance or damage separation components. Put the dryer, filters, drains, monitoring, and maintenance responsibility inside the package specification.
Assuming a compact generator means a compact installation
The compressor, air treatment, receiver, vents, electrical equipment, access space, and sample lines can exceed the generator’s enclosure footprint. Review the complete arrangement before releasing the equipment layout.
Ignoring low-demand operation
A system that performs well at full load may cycle inefficiently or produce unstable pressure when demand is low. Ask for turndown, standby, and restart behavior in the duty profile.
Accepting an unqualified payback claim
Payback changes with purity, capacity, operating hours, electricity, maintenance, and the cost of delivered backup gas. Recalculate every offer with one set of site assumptions.

A practical decision rule
Start with PSA when the written duty calls for high purity, a demanding residual-oxygen limit, or flexibility to change purity requirements, provided the site can support the required air treatment, controls, and maintenance. Start with membrane when the required purity is moderate, the package must be compact and simple, and fast startup or steady operation is valuable. In either case, proceed only when the supplier has guaranteed purity, flow, pressure, feed-air limits, startup behavior, and lifecycle assumptions for the exact installation.
The strongest procurement outcome is not a technology chosen in isolation. It is a complete, testable nitrogen specification that lets every bidder price the same duty and makes the installed system’s performance measurable.
