Mike Basich’s Area-241 is a compact, self-built cabin on his Sierra Nevada property, shaped around a simple goal: learning to provide essentials such as electricity and water while living close to the mountains where he snowboards. Reports describe a small, low-infrastructure home with solar electricity, a wood stove, and water collected from the surrounding landscape. They differ on the exact water source, and none provides a current technical inspection.
What Area-241 is—and where it sits
Make: reported in 2014 that Area-241 sits on a 40-acre property roughly 10 miles outside Truckee, California, and that the cabin measures 228 square feet with a pentagonal footprint. A later Teton Gravity Research profile described it as 225 square feet, outside Soda Springs at an elevation of 7,100 feet. These are outlet-reported figures, not measurements confirmed by a survey; the small difference in stated floor area does not establish a substantive disagreement. Make: · Teton Gravity Research
How the cabin was built
Basich told Make: that he used granite, pine, and Douglas fir sourced from the property. Rather than following a documented set of plans, he described learning through hands-on building and allowing the materials to influence the design: “I like letting materials help shape what you’re building.” The interview offers a personal account of the build, not construction drawings, engineering specifications, or a verified materials schedule.
His motivation went beyond making a small shelter. “I wanted to find a few things with Area-241. For one, putting myself in a place where it made me learn how to produce the things I have taken for granted, like electricity and water coming out of the faucet.” Basich also described the process as both challenging and rewarding: “I’ve learned almost everything I know by doing it, which has made life exciting and hard.” Make:

Reported utilities and daily systems
Electricity from solar panels
Make: and Teton Gravity Research report that solar panels supply the cabin’s electricity. Neither account identifies panel models, array output, battery capacity, inverter, or the equipment’s present condition. The available descriptions therefore establish the reported energy source, not the cabin’s current electrical capacity or performance.
Water from snowmelt or a creek
The accounts describe the water source differently. Make: says the cabin uses snowmelt; Teton Gravity Research says water comes directly from a creek. The reports do not explain whether the difference reflects seasonal collection, separate methods, or a change over time. They also do not establish a particular filtration, treatment, or storage system.

Wood heat and improvised water heating
Make: reports that a wood stove heats the cabin. A caption accompanying its account describes a makeshift oven and copper coils used to heat water. Teton Gravity Research notes south-facing windows that help draw heat into the space. These descriptions do not establish heating efficiency, water temperature, or whether the arrangements meet building or safety requirements.
Plumbing and sanitation
Teton Gravity Research describes the cabin as having no interior plumbing and an outside composting toilet; it also reports a shower that drains through the floor. These are profile descriptions rather than findings from a building inspection, and they do not document the system’s current configuration.

A home connected to snowboarding
The property’s recreation features make the cabin part of Basich’s mountain life, not simply a remote building. Make: reported that the site is three miles from a plowed road in winter and quoted Basich describing access by snowmobile, snowcat, or hiking. Make: and Ecohome also describe a chairlift and rope tow on the property. The reports do not establish that either lift is open to visitors or operating today. Make: · Ecohome

Area-241 is not Basich’s mobile cabin
Basich has also built a separate mobile cabin. A 2015 Snowboarder feature about that project describes reused warehouse sheet metal, reclaimed fixtures, batteries, roof-mounted solar panels, and a propane oven. Those details belong to the trailer-based home and should not be treated as specifications for Area-241. Snowboarder
What the reports establish—and what they do not
Area-241 is reported as a small, self-built cabin using solar electricity and low-infrastructure arrangements for heat, water, and sanitation, set on a property with snowboarding features. The available profiles do not establish its present occupancy, utility-system specifications, code compliance, public access, or current operating condition. It is best understood as a reported account of one person’s evolving DIY mountain home, not as a verified set of plans or a current technical model for construction.
