Use a detergent specifically labeled for pressure-washer use, and follow the instructions for your exact machine. Do not put household bleach through a SIMPSON pressure-washer pump or built-in soap injector: SIMPSON’s FAQ and owner’s manuals explicitly warn against it. Apply detergent through the washer’s low-pressure soap system, then flush the hose and injector with clean water.
Guidance can differ by model and by application method. The evidence here establishes SIMPSON’s rule for its pump and injection system; it does not establish that bleach is acceptable in every brand, washer, downstream applicator, or surface-cleaning job.

What you are actually choosing between
“Soap versus bleach” sounds like a choice between two bottles, but a pressure-washer job involves three separate decisions: whether the chemical is compatible with the washer, whether it suits the surface, and how it reaches that surface. A chemical drawn through the machine’s pump or built-in injector is not the same as a product applied with independent downstream equipment.

The built-in soap injector
A pressure washer normally cleans at high pressure with water alone. Its soap-injection system is designed to draw detergent when the machine is switched to a low-pressure setting. SIMPSON’s instructions identify the black, low-pressure soap nozzle as the nozzle used to draw and apply detergent. If the washer is still operating at high pressure, the injector may not draw as intended.

Separate downstream application
Some cleaning setups place a chemical applicator after the pump rather than sending the chemical through the pump itself. That arrangement is a different equipment configuration. The cited SIMPSON material does not establish a universal rule for bleach used in separate downstream equipment, so do not treat a downstream method as automatically approved. Check both the washer manual and the chemical label before choosing it.
Pressure-washer detergent versus bleach
| Decision factor | Pressure-washer detergent | Bleach through a SIMPSON pump or built-in injector | Bleach in separate equipment |
|---|---|---|---|
| Compatibility | Use only a product labeled for pressure-washer use and allowed by the machine manual. | SIMPSON says never to use bleach with the pump; its manuals warn against bleach. | Not established by the cited material; verify the exact equipment and instructions. |
| Application method | Draw through the soap system at low pressure with the black soap nozzle. | Do not draw through the pump or integrated injector. | Use only if the separate applicator, washer instructions, and chemical label expressly permit it. |
| Surface choice | Select a label that names the intended surface or task, such as vehicles, siding, grills, or lawn furniture. | There is no approved SIMPSON pump application for bleach in the cited guidance. | Surface suitability remains a separate question from equipment compatibility. |
| Cleanup | Flush clean water through the soap hose and injector after use. | Do not introduce the chemical. | Follow the separate applicator’s cleaning procedure and the washer manual. |
| Evidence behind this article | SIMPSON product, how-to, FAQ, and manual guidance supports this use when the product and washer are compatible. | SIMPSON’s own pump and manual warnings support avoiding it. | The reviewed guidance does not establish a general approval or prohibition for every downstream setup. |
Why the approved detergent is the practical default
A pressure-washer detergent is sold for the operating conditions of a pressure-washer cleaning system. Its label supplies the information you need to make the job repeatable: the surfaces it is intended for, how it should be diluted or applied, and whether it is suitable for a pressure washer or soap-injection system. Those directions do not replace the washer manual; both sets of instructions apply.
Using a product that is approved for the machine also gives you a clear cleanup procedure. After detergent has been drawn through the hose and injector, you can run clean water through that same path until the chemical residue is rinsed away. SIMPSON warns that chemicals left in the pump can cause damage, which is why flushing is part of the operating procedure rather than an optional finishing step.

Do not assume that a bottle intended for hand washing, a general household sprayer, or another piece of equipment is automatically suitable for a pressure washer. The relevant question is not whether a chemical can remove dirt in the abstract; it is whether the product label and your washer’s instructions authorize that chemical in that system.

What SIMPSON’s bleach warning covers
SIMPSON’s FAQ says never to use bleach with the pump. Its owner’s-manual warning is broader about chemical hazards: “To avoid these hazards, use only approved soaps and chemicals, do not attempt to pressure wash with volatile, flammable, or corrosive liquids, and NEVER use bleach.” This is a manufacturer safety instruction for SIMPSON equipment, not a laboratory statistic or a universal statement about every pressure washer made by every brand.
For a SIMPSON machine, “do not use bleach” means do not pour it into the detergent container, connect it to the soap hose, or otherwise arrange for the pump or built-in injector to draw it. Chemical residue can remain in the pump or injection path after a job. The company’s instructions therefore pair the prohibition with a positive rule: use only approved soaps and chemicals, and rinse the system with clean water after detergent use.
How to choose a detergent for the surface
Start with the surface and task named on the product label, then confirm that the washer manual permits the product. SIMPSON lists its Multi-Purpose Cleaner 88281/88289 for pressure washers or soap injection and gives cars, RVs, siding, grills, and lawn furniture as example uses. Those examples show the type of label information to look for; they are not permission to use every detergent on every material.

|---|---|---|
| Car or RV | The detergent label names the vehicle surface and the washer manual permits the product in the injector. | Multi-Purpose Cleaner 88281/88289 lists cars and RVs among its examples. |
| Siding | Confirm the siding material and follow the label’s application and dilution directions. | The same product page lists siding as an example task. |
| Grill | Check that the product is intended for the grill’s exterior material and follow any label restrictions. | Grills are included among the listed examples. |
| Lawn furniture | Match the product to the furniture material and avoid treating the label’s example as a blanket approval for all finishes. | Lawn furniture is also listed as an example use. |
| Unlisted or delicate surface | Do not improvise a chemical choice. Check the product label, the washer manual, and any surface-care instructions. | The cited product information does not establish suitability for every material. |
The product number is useful when you are checking a label or manual: SIMPSON identifies Multi-Purpose Cleaner 88281/88289 as a pressure-washer or soap-injection product. Availability, price, and regional stock are not established here, so treat the number as an identification reference rather than a purchasing guarantee.

Step-by-step: applying approved soap through the washer
- Read the washer manual. Find the section covering detergents, chemical injection, and the soap nozzle. The manual controls if its instructions are more restrictive than the product label.
- Read the detergent label. Confirm that it is intended for pressure washers or soap injection, identify the permitted surfaces, and note the stated dilution and application instructions.
- Inspect the equipment. Check the soap hose, inlet, nozzle, and connections for damage or blockage. Do not proceed if the setup cannot hold the hose securely.
- Prepare only the approved product. Put the detergent in the container or connect the hose exactly as the manual describes. Never substitute bleach or an unapproved household chemical in the pump or injector.
- Set up the water supply. Connect the garden hose and make sure the washer has the water supply required by its manual before starting the engine or motor.
- Install the black, low-pressure soap nozzle. SIMPSON’s instructions specify this nozzle for drawing and applying detergent. The low-pressure setting is what allows the injector to pull the product.
- Start the washer according to its manual. Keep the spray directed at the intended work area and use the detergent only on surfaces named by the label.
- Apply evenly. Work in manageable sections so the detergent does not dry before you complete the next cleaning step. Follow the label rather than inventing a stronger concentration.
- Switch back to the appropriate rinsing setup. After the detergent stage, use the nozzle and pressure setting specified by the washer instructions for rinsing the surface.
- Begin the cleanup immediately. When the cleaning pass is complete, remove the detergent from the injection path and draw clean water through the hose and injector.
The black nozzle is not a minor accessory: it is the operating condition SIMPSON identifies for chemical draw. If detergent is not being pulled, confirm that the low-pressure soap nozzle is installed before changing chemicals or increasing concentration.
How to flush the soap hose and injector
Flushing removes detergent from the path that carried it. SIMPSON’s guidance is to draw clean water through the soap hose and injection system until the system is rinsed. The owner’s manual warning about chemicals remaining in the pump explains why this step matters.
- Stop chemical pickup. Follow the manual’s procedure for removing or bypassing the detergent supply. Keep the water supply connected.
- Place the soap hose in clean water or use the clean-water arrangement specified by the washer instructions.
- Install the black low-pressure soap nozzle if the manual requires the injector to be in its drawing mode for the rinse.
- Run clean water through the system. Continue until the discharge is free of visible detergent and the clean-water rinse described by the manual is complete.
- Shut down in the manual’s order. Relieve pressure and store the hose and nozzle as directed by the manufacturer.
Do not regard a short spray at the end of the job as proof that the injector is clean. The goal is to replace the chemical in the hose and injector with clean water, using the procedure and duration specified for your model.

- Will the bleach enter the pump or built-in injector? If the answer is yes for a SIMPSON washer, do not use it. The manufacturer’s FAQ and manuals say never to use bleach with the pump.
- Does the washer manual specifically approve bleach for your exact model and method? If no, do not assume approval from another machine, an online tip, or a different applicator.
- Is the chemical being applied by separate downstream equipment? The cited SIMPSON material does not establish a universal rule for that arrangement. Check the instructions for the washer, downstream device, and bleach product together.
- Does the chemical label approve the intended surface and application? Equipment compatibility does not make a chemical suitable for every surface.
- Can you complete the required cleanup? Any method must include the equipment maker’s rinse and storage procedure.
If any answer is uncertain, choose a pressure-washer detergent whose label and machine manual agree. That is the only option supported by the cited SIMPSON pump guidance for its built-in system.

The injector does not draw detergent
First confirm that the black, low-pressure soap nozzle is installed and that the washer is operating in the low-pressure condition required for chemical draw. Then check the hose connection and verify that the detergent container or supply is arranged as the manual shows. Do not respond by adding bleach or increasing the product concentration beyond the label.
The machine sprays water but no soap
Check whether the detergent has reached the end of the soap hose and whether the hose is kinked, loose, or obstructed. Recheck the product setup against the manual. If the injector still will not draw, stop and use the manufacturer’s troubleshooting procedure rather than forcing a chemical through the pump.

You installed a high-pressure nozzle by mistake
Stop the detergent application and install the black low-pressure soap nozzle identified by SIMPSON. The injector is designed to draw detergent during the low-pressure operation; the nozzle choice is part of the procedure.
You cannot identify the washer model
Do not guess at chemical compatibility. Locate the model and owner’s manual, identify the detergent instructions, and use only a product whose label matches those instructions. Until then, use water alone rather than introducing an unverified chemical.
Safety checks for a construction or maintenance job
- Use only approved soaps and chemicals identified by the washer manual and product label.
- Never put bleach through a SIMPSON pump or built-in soap-injection system.
- Do not pressure-wash with volatile, flammable, or corrosive liquids; this warning appears in the SIMPSON owner’s manual.
- Keep the chemical label available while setting up, diluting, applying, and flushing.
- Use the label’s surface restrictions and application directions; a product suitable for one listed task is not automatically suitable for another material.
- Prevent accidental chemical changes by labeling containers and keeping approved detergent separate from unrelated household chemicals.
- Flush the soap hose and injector with clean water after every detergent application.
- Follow the manual’s shutdown, pressure-release, and storage instructions before disconnecting hoses or nozzles.
These checks are especially important when several workers share a washer. A familiar-looking container can be mistaken for an approved detergent, and a previous operator may have left chemical in the hose. Verify the product and rinse the system instead of relying on memory.
How far this guidance can be generalized
The primary evidence comes from SIMPSON’s FAQ, product information, how-to instructions, and owner’s manual. It directly supports three model-specific conclusions: use detergent designed for pressure washers, apply it through the low-pressure soap setup, and never use bleach with a SIMPSON pump. It also supports flushing clean water through the injection system after detergent use.
Those sources do not establish that every pressure-washer manufacturer gives identical instructions, that every bleach product is compatible with a downstream applicator, or that any chemical is safe on every surface. For a different brand or a different application method, replace the SIMPSON-specific instruction with the exact wording in that machine’s manual. When the manual and chemical label do not clearly agree, do not connect the chemical.
A practical rule for crews and homeowners
For the built-in soap system, keep the decision simple: choose a pressure-washer detergent named as compatible by both the product label and the washer manual; install the black low-pressure soap nozzle; apply it only to a listed surface; and flush clean water through the hose and injector when finished. Treat bleach as outside the approved SIMPSON pump workflow, and investigate any separate application method only through its own equipment and chemical instructions.
