Fluidized-bed powder coating applies powder by dipping a preheated part into a bed of dry coating material suspended by upward airflow. The powder melts on contact with the hot workpiece—not because the air heats it—and the resulting film build depends on the part’s temperature, geometry, time in the bed, airflow and powder grade. The method is especially associated with thermoplastic coatings and high-build applications, but it requires a tank designed for dipping and material-specific process settings.

What is fluidized-bed powder coating?

It is a thermal dip-coating process. Air rises through a porous distributor beneath a tank of dry powder. At a suitable, evenly distributed flow, particles become suspended and move in a fluid-like manner. Axalta describes the behavior this way: “Our fluidised bed powders behave like a liquid when pressurised air is allowed to bubble up through it.” (Axalta, “Coating methods”.)

The air suspends the powder; it does not melt it. The part is heated separately, then immersed so powder touching its hot surface melts and forms a coating. After withdrawal, additional heating may be needed for flow, film formation or cure, depending on the coating chemistry and process. The part is then cooled and inspected. (AirSprayTech’s equipment and process guide; PPG’s powder-coating overview.)

How does fluidized-bed powder coating work?

The process follows a sequence, but its temperatures, times and handling conditions are not universal. Set them from the coating’s current technical data, equipment instructions, part geometry and a qualified production process.

Fluid Bed Powder Coating System
  • The adjustable airflow regulator lets you fine-tune the fluidization level to match different powder densities, resulting in smooth, bubble-free coatings with consistent thickness every time.
  • Suitable for a wide range of applications—including jig and lure coating, automotive part restoration, custom motorcycle components, jewelry making, and industrial small-parts finishing
  • Constructed from heavy-gauge, powder-coated steel housing with a scratch-resistant exterior and a replaceable, wear-resistant fluidizing plate, this unit is built for years of reliable service
  • Featuring a quick-release reservoir design for fast powder changes and easy cleanup, along with a built-in powder scoop and cleaning brush, this fluid bed minimizes downtime between colors
  • This fluid bed solves the common challenges of uneven powder application, excessive overspray, wasted material, and inconsistent finish quality—it creates a perfectly fluidized powder cloud that coats parts evenly in a single dip, reduces powder consumption by up to 30%, and eliminates the frustration of touch-ups and rework, so you can achieve factory-quality results with less effort and greater material efficiency.
  1. Prepare the substrate and remove contamination. Apply the pretreatment required by the coating supplier.
  2. Mask any areas that must remain uncoated.
  3. Preheat the part to the supplier-specified condition. Verify the part itself, not just the oven display.
  4. Fluidize the powder evenly using the bed’s designed air-distribution system.
  5. Immerse the part with controlled orientation, depth, speed and dwell time.
  6. Withdraw it smoothly and return loose powder using the approved process.
  7. Post-heat if required for flow, film formation or cure.
  8. Cool and inspect the coating, including thin and heavy sections, cavities and other challenging features.

For a specific powder grade, obtain its technical data sheet and confirm the required part temperature, immersion conditions and any post-heat schedule with the supplier. A general process overview is not a substitute for those instructions.

What equipment does the process require?

A dipping tank and a powder feed hopper have different jobs. A fluidized feed hopper conditions powder for delivery to an electrostatic spray gun; a fluidized-bed coating tank contains the powder mass into which the heated part is dipped. Do not assume a spray-gun hopper is suitable for dipping. AirSprayTech advises using equipment designed and approved for the intended process (equipment and process guide).

Seymour 20-41 Black Truck Bed Coating, 20 oz
  • A thick, durable black sealant that forms a protective skin that is both tough and flexible
  • Package Dimensions: 5.5 H x 5.5 L x 8.25 W (inches)
  • Package Weight: 1.0 pounds
  • Country of Origin : United States

Before operating a system, confirm with the equipment and powder suppliers that the tank, distributor and air system are designed for the intended powder and hot-part process. Follow the equipment manufacturer’s instructions; an improvised container or unapproved air system is not an appropriate substitute.

What controls film build and coating quality?

Film build is not controlled by a single timer or temperature setting. Heat stored in the workpiece melts powder on contact, while the part’s shape and mass determine how that heat changes during immersion. APS Coatings identifies preheat temperature and immersion time as factors affecting deposited thickness (fluidized-bed process overview).

  • For even more creative uses, try this product to protect your boat deck, wrought iron, exterior steps, and more!
  • Covers 8.5 sq. ft. per can
  • Part-metal temperature: Check the workpiece at relevant locations. An oven display indicates its control-zone or air temperature; it does not prove that every part area has reached the target. Confirm an appropriate measurement method and procedure with the supplier.
  • Thermal mass and geometry: Thick areas retain heat longer than thin areas, so they can continue melting powder after thinner regions begin to cool. Evaluate edges, cavities, weldments, inside surfaces and fixture contact points rather than relying on one convenient reading.
  • Preheat and immersion: These affect how much powder melts onto the part. Insufficient heat or dwell can leave coverage inadequate or irregular; excessive heat or dwell can produce excessive build or uneven flow. The threshold for a defect depends on the material and part and is not a universal number.
  • Powder grade and airflow: Use a grade intended for the process and follow the bed and powder suppliers’ directions for even fluidization. Poor airflow distribution can leave inactive regions or make fluidization unstable.
  • Surface preparation: Remove impurities and use the specified pretreatment. Arkema notes that pretreatment may include protective undercoats and links coating lifetime to the quality of preliminary surface treatment (Rilsan PA11 application guidance).

When is a fluidized bed a good fit?

PPG describes fluidized-bed application as the original and still primary technique for thermoplastic powders. Electrostatic spray is the primary method for thermoset powders, though fluidized beds are also used for some thermoset applications requiring high film build. Thermoplastic powders normally are not cured; thermoset cure requirements depend on the specified material schedule. Whether post-heating is needed can depend on part mass, part temperature and powder type (PPG’s overview; PPG’s powder-coating information).

APS Coatings presents the method as useful for thick coatings and for covering internal and external surfaces of complex parts in one operation (process overview). Assess the job against the actual coating grade and geometry rather than choosing a method from thickness alone.

How should published process ranges be interpreted?

APS Coatings’ undated overview, checked in 2026, publishes a thickness range of 200–500 microns and an application-temperature range of 250–400°C (fluidized-bed process overview). These are that source’s broad process figures, not universal targets or guarantees for every powder, part or installation. Do not apply them as a recipe: use the current data sheet and qualified instructions for the specific material and workpiece.
