A direct-drive washing-machine motor cannot be safely powered from a generic wiring recipe. First identify the washer and motor, then use the matching original inverter/controller or a replacement drive confirmed compatible with that motor’s ratings and feedback system. “Direct drive” describes how the motor connects mechanically to the drum; it does not specify its voltage, wiring, or control interface.
What “direct drive” tells you—and what it doesn’t
In a direct-drive washer, the rotor couples to the drum shaft instead of turning it through a belt and pulley. The motor still needs the electrical control system designed for its particular type. Xiaomi, for example, describes a Mijia washer-dryer with a Nan Yang DD inverter motor and an electronic controller that adjusts speed and torque for wash programs (Xiaomi’s product FAQ). That describes one appliance, not a shared standard for all direct-drive motors.
Washer motors may use different architectures. The cited service-manual material distinguishes universal motors from brushless DC (BLDC) motors and states that BLDC motors require a motor driver; it also describes an integrated motor/inverter arrangement. A motor marked “DD” is therefore not necessarily ready to run from a mains supply or a basic speed controller.
How to identify the motor before powering it
- Record the washer model. Find the model label on the appliance and locate its matching service manual or wiring diagram.
- Record the motor identification. Photograph its label, part number, connector, and any sensor board. Keep the original harness and controller if available.
- Confirm the motor architecture and connections from documentation. Do not infer a pinout from wire colors or assume that three heavy wires are the only connections. Feedback, thermal protection, and control signals may use separate wires.
- Check for model-specific replacement parts. A parts supplier such as Frigidaire Appliance Parts lists direct-drive rotor and stator parts and directs users to search by washer model. A part that looks similar is not proof of electrical compatibility.
Choose a controller path

There is no universally suitable controller established for unidentified washer DD motors. NXP’s BLDC reference design demonstrates one approach using Hall sensors and closed-loop speed control (NXP DRM102), but it is an example architecture, not a compatibility list or a wiring instruction for a particular motor.

Why generic wiring advice is risky
A washer drive may rectify AC into a DC bus and then use an inverter to drive the motor. NXP’s washer-drive application note describes this kind of system and explicitly does not include the hardware design (NXP AN3476). The voltage and stored energy in such equipment can be hazardous, including after power is disconnected. Do not connect unknown wires to mains or try combinations until the motor turns.
The available manual excerpt gives a useful example of why model identification matters: for a Daewoo KUD-UD122RF BLDC DD motor, it lists 24 poles, 36 stator slots, a 310 V DC rated value, a 5 V Hall IC supply, and model-specific speeds of 45 rpm in washing and 1300 rpm in spin-drying. Those values belong only to that example; they are not specifications for other washer motors.

What a safe project decision looks like
- If the washer and motor are unidentified, stop before energizing the assembly and obtain the matching documentation.
- If the original controller is present, preserve it and its harness while confirming the correct motor/controller pairing and command method.
- If replacing the controller, require documentation that matches the motor’s ratings and feedback arrangement; a generic “three-phase” label is not enough.
- Secure and guard the motor and any attached rotating parts before testing. Use appropriately rated equipment and qualified help for mains-voltage or inverter work.
